Hi Jeff. I didn't realize you had made this video. Here I just recently made a somewhat similar video because I thought one did not exist. I should also note that you have a very calming narration voice which is perfect for first time drone flyers (makes the directions seem very easy and less confusing). Well done!

Hi Captain! I'm a subscriber on your channel so I saw when your video came out - the more good info we can put out for newcomers, the better, so I was glad to see it. Newbies are looking for confidence and reassurance when they want to learn how to fly drones, so having more videos from different people on this topic is something they'd like. Love your channel - you have great content and I really enjoy the production value you put into your videos as well. I wish you were closer to Texas. I'm looking for a few other KZbin pilots to collaborate with and I'd enjoy the opportunity to do a few videos with you. Thanks again!

Really good video, I recently purchased the Typhoon H+, although there are some additions I finally discovered features I was not aware of... the typhoon is really different than DJI and the less expensive drones. This drone is great, very impressive in the air and the most docile of the aircraft I own. I like the pace you present the information-still new to this hobby although I have previously flown gas powered airplanes and helicopters. Once again thank you for the video.

Jeff Sibelius Hi Jeff this is my second drone. I have the Q500. After watching this Visio I realized why I crashed the q500. I was landing straight down and didn't angle my flight direction. That's a really good point. A lot of the principles in these three first-flight videos apply to most drones, even other brands. I've watched several DJI tutorials and learned a lot from them for my Yuneec flying. The raising landing gear is cool, isn't it?

Did a few short 2-3minute flights. More for getting used to the difference between smart/angle along with practice and landing. Did it in my cul-de-sac Went pretty well. Also did some with GPS disabled. Had 2 compass errors but that was when battery was low and was near a metal structure...hope that was the reason.

Hi Jeff... I am a new subscriber. I am very appreciative of all your hard work and dedication to making these videos. The are awesome. I am also new to drones... I just purchased a new Typhoon H (std). I am a long time licensed private pilot (I'm retired now). The one question I have for you right now is about the SD memory cards. What is the maximum size to use in the H? And... should I also be using one in the ST-16 as well? I have already registered my drone with the FAA. Thanks again for all your vid's... I have viewed most all of them (as it pertains to H's and other important topics....) John W

Great video and helpful for the new "H" pilot. There are a couple statements that I've found to be different. 1. "Turn off video recording or the video won't be saved." That isn't true. I've done this a few times. It may be firmware related but I've never lost a file from making this mistake. I believe in older firmware if you did that, the file didn't close properly which rendered it unplayable. However, if you make that mistake, simply power up the "H" again and then power down and the video file will close properly and will play normally. 2. You use the term "vortex ring state". Unless you are schooled in fluid dynamics, that term doesn't make much sense to the average person. I've been a real helicopter pilot since 1984 and the condition you are referring to has always been called "settling with power." The reason this term has always been used (in FAA Examinations as well) is because it is easier to visualize the condition taking place with that terminology vs. Vortex Ring State.
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks sillywwabbit! Regarding the video, if you power down without shutting off the aircraft, you often can salvage things by booting up the aircraft and hitting the video button a couple times. That holds true for the Q500 as well. I'm going to be doing some quick tip videos in the near future and that's one tip I plan to point out. It doesn't always work, however. I've tried it where it works, and I've tried it out without success. In this first flight video my goal was to establish the good practice of making sure people hit that button - then there's never any risk of them losing the video. I'll happily defer to your expertise with regards to vortex ring state and settling with power. I'm sure you're correct on that. If you talk with people in the multi-rotor hobby, they use the vortex ring state term, and even if it's not the best choice it doesn't hurt to use the more common phrase for newbies. If I could put an annotation on this video with the correct term, I would though. I like to be accurate. Unfortunately, if you use end cards on your video you can't put notes on the video, so I'm kinda stuck. Thanks for watching and offering your expertise!

Jeff is not rabbit mode the high rate's dial? Also the rabbit mode , yuneec say's it is for use at altitudes of 5,000 to 8,000 ft. The higher the altitude the harder the motor's work to sustain the higher altitude's. Basic rule for all flying thing's. Equal's higher flight ,less endurance. due to more power consumed. So is the rabbit-turtle dial for high and low rate's? Or for higher motor output? Thank"s.
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 7 жыл бұрын
Rabbit mode will serve both purposes you describe - increase your flying speed and provide more power to the motors for flying in the thinner air of high altitudes.
@bushpilot-bm3kf
@bushpilot-bm3kf 7 жыл бұрын
Thank's Jeff! Yuneec say's to use turtle speed when flying between 5.000 -8.000 ft. alt. So That's why I asked. Seem's counter intuitive . At 8,000 + altitude even in turtle mode the rate setting seem's very high. The directional change's seem very abrupt. In rabbit mode is your video stable? Thank's bushpilot 2001
@bushpilot-bm3kf
@bushpilot-bm3kf 7 жыл бұрын
Sorry I meant to say Yuneec recomend's turtle mode for altitudes of 5,000-8,000 alt. Not rabbit mode. Thank's Let me know what u think. Thank's.
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 7 жыл бұрын
You're putting a lot of good thinking into this and making good observations. It does seem counter intuitive. The air is thinner so your motor's power would be diminished, so you need to increase power to maintain lift. That's what I would think anyway. The Yuneec manual is translated to English from Chinese, and sometimes that isn't done accurately. Logically speaking, I think this is one of those cases - I have not flown at higher altitudes, so I'm speculating based on logic and reasoning not speaking from experience. The H can be twitchy in Rabbit mode when you have sudden stick motions. The gimbal eats a lot of that, but the real problem is that it can cause your props to show up in your shot; e.g., if you jam it all the way forward in rabbit mode, you're likely to see your front motors at the top of the camera view. Same holds true for your landing gear if not raised - jam it to the side or do a fast yaw and the feet often show up in the shot. The H is like the DJI drones in that respect; you have to discipline yourself to ease into changes in speed or direction to reduce these situations.
@bushpilot-bm3kf
@bushpilot-bm3kf 7 жыл бұрын
Very possible it is chinese translation. Yes every multirotor I have built for camera's, it is possible in fast forward flight to see the motor arm's. I built a 650 mm quad and to slove that problem put 500 mm rails for the gimbal. So the camera was in front of the motor's,problem solved. Just adjusted theCOG by moving batteries to the rear. The yuneec even in turtle mode is very twitchy w/cyclic input's. I will adjust to it. The best thing about the H to me is the manual mode. It hold's altitude and attitude better than any other brand or model I have ever flown. so easy to fly, I also fly competive 3-D helicopter's. Thank's much for your insight's into the H. From my full scale flight experience high altitude supersonic craft, the power ratio increase to stay at high altitude is dramatic. My H is going to be flown at 16,000 ft. this weekend. From the top of Mt. Crestone in the Sangre DeCristo mtns. Basically 5 miles behind my house, which is a heliport at 8,0002 ft. The battery endurance at that altitude should be interesting. I believe it will be a world record altitude for the H. I will let you know the result's. bushpilot 2001.

Jeff what is your opinion of the h
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 8 жыл бұрын
Great question. My opinion of it for my own uses is that it's terrific. Greater camera features (histogram, etc.) and CCC alone make it a big improvement over the Q, and then throw in the fact that it handles wind so much better than the Q and it's worth every penny of its price difference. But that's me - so who am I? I use it for personal and commercial use, mostly videos over stills, I'm experienced in drones and a photographer of more than 35 years. I fly to do photography; flying is not why I do it, so I want a simple, stable, reliable system that allows me to get the images I need. For someone just starting with this level of drone, the Q500 is cheaper, easier to fly, slower and it has mature firmware that isn't buggy at all. Easier to fly, easier to maintain, less expensive - but it doesn't handle wind as well as other drones. Now throw in the Phantom 4 Pro to the conversation and it has features that make it a great choice for people with different skill sets and priorities. I'm actually going to do a video on the right drone to buy from those three choices - if Autel wants to loan me a drone I'll include it as well. But the real question is, what are your priorities and skills? How do you want to use it and what is most important for you? Tell me a little about your plans and I can give you a better answer for your purposes.

Jeff Sibelius basically Jeff I've had my q just short of a year I love it but I want to have waypoints ,but I don't want to have to have a tablet or phone to use it, I want it self contained, I use it for the pleasure of flying and to photograph nature and things we are doing,I'm not sure if I do commercial right now but who knows,I got a lot of good info about my q from you keep up the good work
@JeffSibelius
@JeffSibelius 8 жыл бұрын
Based on that, the Typhoon H is your choice. You get the integrated tablet on the remote, double the ability to fly in wind, waypoints, obstacle avoidance (mediocre), and the ability to keep flying if you lose a motor. Faster speed, 360 degree gimbal, landing gear that raises up . . . everything on your list and more on top of that. The H will work in some commercial applications if you go that route and the new features they added with firmware updates are great. Phantom 4 is a terrific drone with camera features above and beyond what the H provides, but you do have to use an external viewfinder. The Ipad/Iphone just isn't as bright, and the Phantom 4 Plus is having all kinds of problems with setting up. You are going to love the upgrade from the Q500 to the H. I'm glad I've been able to help. I will continue to do Q500 videos but I'm catching up on typhoon H episodes right now. I also plan a whole series on the Phantom 4. Then we'll get into more advanced photography tutorials. LOL I have a bunch of videos planned.
