Hey, so I've been playing foosball casually since I was like 6 or 7, and I think I'm pretty good (I haven't lost very often), but I've never done anything like tournaments or anything. I'm a bit out of practice right now (I probably haven't played in a few years), but I still have the muscle memory I think, so it'd probably take me a few games to get back to where I used to be. You sound like you're a real professional player. If I wanted to try to get started playing in like tournaments or something, how would I do that and what would that entail?

That was actually a really good beginner's guide, but I'd suggest to put in the handposition on the bar as well, at least for the snakeshot, as you pull it with your wrist on the bar. I've been playing for some eighteen years now and only recently started to get serious gain after a seven year hiatus of only playing occasionally at bars, and I definitely recommend this video for beginners.

I played back in the 80s some, I wasn't very good but the national champion was from my hometown so I got to play against him. He had a dead bar pull where if you pushed the 2 man blocker all the way forward he could get around it almost instant. I blocked against him, you had to give him a hole and take it away, we lost but he was very nice and complimentary.

I know a guy who can do a wall pass, (from a forward ball pinch, near the wall), and you can't block it even with your bumper against the wall on a Tornado table. I think the ball is going over the edge of the foot and against the wall. He calls it his "brush pass". He is probably about 80-85% successful with it.

At min 3:03, is my preferred goalie stance, (almost), with the pull shot having to "go around the corner" (or push shot), at more of a 90 degree angle, (further and longer time). You can have a wider goalie pattern if you angle the feet toward each other, (closing up the center hole), but not so much that the ball could actual fit under the feet. I think I can block as good as anybody in the world with the technique, and we developed it as kids in a arcade in the 80's in Manistee Michigan. If you play the edges of the openings well, it is harder to go around, and harder to go through. If you can block about 50% of the worlds fastest pull shots with it, (and I have.), it's working. You just need to get the damn ball. :)
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 2 жыл бұрын
I find I have to change goalie stance, based on who is shooting on me. One guy is really good at angles and tears up my standard stance. Your last statement is so true! You can be a great shooter and a great blocker, but the guy with the most ball control always wins. Players that seem to have magnets on their toes always have the ball and always win the game.

And a front player, what I love about a goalie who shoots from in front of his own goal, is stuffing it back down his throat/goal with my 3 man. Do that twice, and you just took away most of his offensive game. The third time he gets the ball and scopes the center lines, you just say, "I hope you're hungry", and that ball is not going up the center. :)

I have played Foosball for 3 years. My strategy is to pass the ball to my keeper and my keeper will take a long shot. Surprisingly 75% of goals I score in Foosball were either by Keeper or right back
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 6 жыл бұрын
+Sir Iodine - I have been playing 15 years. In the early days, shots from goal were really common and effective. Now everyone has learned how to synchronize forward and goal defense, and the percentage has gone way down. I would say now 30% of shots from the 3 bar go in, but less than 10% from the back. The keeper should definitely shoot, to keep the other team on their toes, but experienced players will shut you down. Start working on your forward shots too. You will be better for it in a few years.

@@HowToLou As soon as I find, as the goalie, that I can't get a shoot through very easily, I let my partner know that I am going to pass up to his 3 man. Usually, about 2 or 3" from the wall is a good pass, but even if it does not make it, he has a shot of getting it with a 5 man pass. I would say about 75% of the time, we can get it to our 3 man, where a goal is much more likely. Doug in Michigan.

Great info.... is the playing field texture different on tables that use a more textured red ball? They seem super smooth compared to my table.
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 3 жыл бұрын
The playing surface on competition grade tables is smooth with a matte finish. Most importantly, the surface is completely flat, so the ball only goes where the player directs it. Cheaper tables have bowed or warped playing surfaces, so the ball moves more randomly. I have seen these tables with super glossy or super rough surfaces. It just depends on the maker. The fuzzy balls are meant to make them easier to grab and less likely to roll away at the slightest bump.
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 2 жыл бұрын
@@HowToLou Sometimes, the surface is flat/level. Playing on a poorly leveled or poor surface is good for ball control, and it becomes easy on a good surface. That was my experience anyway. :)

Hi there, love you video here I'll be finding more for sure. I have a quick question? I see you are using a warrior table. How does it compare to A high end Tornado table? I had a Cyclone 2 and loved it, Unfortunately it got damaged and I replaced it with a high end European style table and don't care for it. Tornado tables are extremely hard to find where we live but I have found reasonably priced Warrior tables. Thanks for your time.
@Klos1neMN
@Klos1neMN 6 жыл бұрын
Nick Durkin High end Tornado models with the coin slot (otherwise known as "coin ops") are heavier and more durable than any Warrior table since Warrior doesn't make a coin op version of their tables. True, Warrior tables are the best tables in their price range but a Tornado T3000, T2000, and 30th Anniversary gray marble side tables are all heavier and more durable. As you pointed out Tornadoes are hard to come by in the European market so a good alternative would be a Fireball, Warrior, or Guardian table. All of these tables have the European style rod structure (1 man goalie with ramps) but have the American style table structure (no ramps on the side like a Garlando or Roberto Sport.)

Is it possible to execute these tricks with a plastic white ball? Its much faster than the orange official ball and we prefer to play with it at work
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 7 жыл бұрын
+j3di3 - it is possible, but it is hard to do. The yellow ball is somewhat "sticky" so it will more easily stay in one place so you can set up a shot. If you try to set up for a poll shot with the white ball, more often than not, it just rolls away before you get a chance to shoot it. Wildly slapping at the ball is definitely a fun way to play. I used to do that too. Taking the time to learn passes that your opponents can't stop, and shots that they can't even see, takes the game to a whole new level of addiction!
@j3di3
@j3di3 7 жыл бұрын
The reason we stopped playing with the official balls is that on our table "RobertoSports College Pro" there were many dead zones where the ball would just get stuck and have to be reset by hand. Is this normal? Does this happen on professional tables?
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 7 жыл бұрын
You might try a pink Tornado ball. They are sticky enough to stop for a shot, but still pretty fast on the table. One of the main benefits of a professional table is that the play surface is totally flat and has no low areas where the ball gravitates. Tornadoes are super flat, for example. Cheap tables sag and you basically end up playing in a bowl. Pro tables also have really hard, strong walls, so the ball bounces back as fast as it goes in. Cheap tables have thin, soft walls that steal energy from the ball and slow it down.

@HowToLou 4 жыл бұрын
I play on Tornadoes mainly because I started before Warrior existed. Tornado is a sturdier table, with better end wall bounce, BUT you pay more for that extra strength. Warrior makes a good table and you can definitely tick tack and practice any other shot on it. If you are just starting out, I would strongly recommend buying a used table on craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. The tables themselves don’t wear too much, and you can easily replace any bad men or bearings.

Wait, 1 goalie, only 2 defenses, but 5 in the middle and 3 in the front? Apart from that, the ground is completely flat. At least in spain, we have 1 goalie, 3 defenders, 3 mid and 4 front, the ground has a slight curvature (the extremes are higher than the center). I kinda like our version a little bit more. One thing that I do prefeer from this one is that the guys have a flat surface to kick the ball, in ours they are realistic figures with 2 pointy feet, easier to hold the ball in a place, but way harder to aim when shooting for sure. I think I'd like a version with realistic figures (with the team uniform instead of being all just one color, have arms and a face) except that they wouldn't have feet but a flat surface.
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 4 жыл бұрын
We like a flat level play surface so they ball will sit in one spot and not roll down the hill. The non-realistic men a a special patented design that gives far more grip and control than realistic players. Field soccer is not very popular in America, so we don’t really care about team colors that much.

As a long time lover of the game, when I was young about 20 years old, I was about as good as one could get playing this game. But, to have a real Foos ball game, you must have a Rene Pierre table and a must to use cork balls. Plastic ball are for beginners. In competition, you have to be able to pinch the ball. Cork is soft and will allow you to do so. :By pinching the ball, with a flick of the wrist, you can send the ball into the hole at such a speed it is hard to see. If you have a good partner, either one that can play the back as well as the front, your team can stay on the table for a long time. Both the front and the back have their own skill shots. If you play together long enough, you know how to set up the men and allow the back shooter to ring the bell as it is called with precision and speed. It takes a long time to learn this game but a very rewarding one when you get good. Jerry from Irmo South Carolina.
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 3 жыл бұрын
Well said about everything except plastic balls. The Tornado table has precision ground hard plastic balls and can be shot so fast that they can’t be seen. In the 70s, there was a million dollar tournament using plastic balls. They are not for beginners.
@jerryhubbard4461
@jerryhubbard4461 3 жыл бұрын
@@HowToLou I remember plastic balls back in the day. Those of us that played on the upper level would not play a table with plastic. Once the cork balls were broken in, being able to pinch them made it much more fun ringing the bell. Sill like the Renee Pierre tables.
@EarthSurferUSA
@EarthSurferUSA 2 жыл бұрын
@@jerryhubbard4461 I have never seen a cork ball, but if it held up, it sounds like the control of some rubber coated balls we played with back in the 80's. Great foot control, but the softer surface did not snap off the wall with bank shots as well as the harder balls. So our favorite was a plastic ball that was soft enough to pinch easily, and hard enough to where it would not die much off the walls. Overall, I think I would like the cork balls, (but I didn't use bank shots often). But how heavy are they in comparison, and how do they hold up? Do they "chunk" over time with hard play? I am sure they are tougher than a wine bottle cork, but I don't think I would want a heavier ball if it is. Now be careful of telling me what "I must use", or else I may end up hating it before I ever tried one. :)
@jerryhubbard4461
@jerryhubbard4461 2 жыл бұрын
@@EarthSurferUSA The cork balls had a hard paint or something coating . They were soft enough you could grab them easily and when you snap your wrist for the shot, they were very fast almost so fast you could not see the ball. Also they worked very well with the left hand shot. Not sure how long they would last but once the coating was wearing off they would become spotty and not roll as smooth. The places we played usually kept new or fairly new balls or we would complain. lol. I miss those days. One thing I would not do, play on a table that was not Rene Piere. What a game.

Why is the snake shot legal? Seems a bit like spinning doesn't it?
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 6 жыл бұрын
+jordantiste - Spinning is the uncontrolled and random thing you see most younger kids do, when just messing around on a table. The snake shot is very skill based, as it takes months to get good at it. The snake shot rotates the rod a little less than a full circle, from the time you begin the shot, until it is fully executed, and is not considered a spin. This is the shot of choice for roughly 50% of professional foosball players, in US tournaments.

I am confused, How come its illegal to bar spin but the chap explains a "snake shot" at approx 3:10 and says you have to flip the guy over? Is that counted as a spin?? Cheers
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 5 жыл бұрын
This is a much debated point. The basic idea of “no spinning” is to prevent what kids tend to do. That is, freely spin the rods continuously, like a fan, hoping to hit the ball. The snake shot is not that at all. It is a precise maneuver that is not only allowed, but the dominant shot in pro tournaments. It is technically not a spin because the rod rotates less than 360 degrees before and less than 360 degrees after he shot

I am no expert. But I heard the same thing as long as your man starts on the ball (as shown) you would not travel a complete 360°. If your man was straight down and you maneuvered this shot you would go past 360° and that would be illegal. The key (in another explanation) is the foot on top of the ball.

I have a question/observation; I play this game with my cousin frequently and he mostly scores from his middle (5 bar) because they are lightening fast! Can't see them, can only hear them hit the goal. Okay, now my question is, do you think lefties are better at this game? Since the game seems to progress towards their direction, especially as they move the ball forward. I was thinking this could be one of the reasons as to why i sometimes cant keep up with him!
@FahadFtw
@FahadFtw 4 жыл бұрын
Okay to clarify what i meant by lefties having more advantage: When the ball is in my defense, it is a bit difficult for me to pass it skillfully forward to the 5 bar with my weaker hand (left), and when i succeed, I'd face the same issue again with passing it to the 3 bar. However, with him it is completely a different issue! He can just pass the ball forward with his favorable left hand till he reaches the goal easily. I feel like it works better in his favor. What do you think, am i delusional :x?
@HowToLou
@HowToLou 4 жыл бұрын
I happen to be left-handed so I am somewhat qualified to answer this. I am indeed one of the best in my club of roughly 10 players, scoring directly from the 5-bar. I can do pull shots and angle shots that others have trouble mastering with a weaker left hand. That is where it ends, though. I am not the best player in my club. There are right handers far better than me. Its actually fairly easy to pass the ball from the 5-bar. The HARD part is catching it on your 3-bar, and that takes right hand skills. Also, when the ball is in the back, I move back and shoot from the 2-bar, with my right hand, so thats not a left-hand advantage. Your cousin beats you because he is just better. Foosball does not favor lefties. You need to practice your 5-to-3 pass. You have an advantage of a stronger right hand for catching passes. Also, you need to pay close attention to how he is scoring from the five. You have 3 bars to block him. You need to shut him down. You are not delusional, but you are rationalizing. Lefties don’t have an advantage. People that practice, do. You can beat him.

Table Soccer (foosball) is like field soccer. Little kids just run around the field kicking the ball as hard as they can, generally toward the goal. Pros carefully control and pass the ball and work as a team to score. Little kids spin the rods and its fun. Pros control and pass the ball and play in $50,000 tournaments. There is no wrong way to play. It just depends on your level. Lead by example. Develop a killer pull or snake shot and burn them every time, and they will start paying attention.

It is so much more fun to develop skill-----in anything that skill can be gained with. Find one kid, who wants to play it correctly, and as soon as you 2 start developing some skill, I am pretty sure the rest will follow. In 2 years, you could be having local Church tournaments for charity. But you should have money prizes too,--because skill, if we want to keep searching for it,---has to be rewarded. Learn a few shots, invite other church members over to play/learn, and you will have a neat tourney going in no time. :)

@HowToLou
@HowToLou 7 жыл бұрын
+Glodeanu Andrei - you used the word "spin" and spinning the rod more than 360° is illegal, but I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant. I think you are asking how to hit the ball harder and make it go faster. The trick to doing this is to start with the ball slightly behind your man, so that he has to reach is the leg back to hit the ball. The more time the toe has in contact with the ball as you shoot, The faster it will go. If you really want to surprise your friends move the ball to the perfect position to where you can pinch it against the table with your man, put a lot of force on it, and then let it wiggle free. It will come out like a bullet. Another good option for speed, is to switch to an open hand grip. With a closed hand grip, you just grab the rod and twist it like a screwdriver, and you are limited by the speed and strength of your wrist. With an open handed grip, you roll the handle from the heel of your palm down to the knuckles, by pulling your hand upward. This allows all the muscles in your arms all the way up to your shoulder to apply power to the shot, and it goes a lot faster.

This may be late, but try opening your hand as you roll down on the bar to pull your guy back before you shoot, then catch the handle with your fingertipps as you shoot. This will not only greatly increase the power of your shots, it will also give you a feel for the snap you need to put into your shot, and as you get better, you will find that you won't need to open your hand as much to get the same snap. It's something you need to feel out with lots of repetition.

@@HowToLou Oh, that may be true today, because the arcade where we played in the 80's is closed, like most I bet. All I remember is living 10 miles out of town, with my new 16 years old driving license and hand me down, (twice) car, and my buddy telling me about this new game in town. With about 10 kids figuring it out on 2 tables for a few years, I don't think I could have gotten nearly as good at home, almost alone. We invented, and learned from each other with almost no outside influence, and the talent got quite good in pretty short time. When a guy from out of town heard about us and came to play, (His name was Sonnenberg), he showed us the "snake shot", and it was tricky. But we had so many shots he had not seen, and all we had to do was get the ball to our 3-man. We liked being "tricky" as much as we liked being fast. IMO, the best place to learn to play, is where people are playing, and with people who are good. I am sure I would have figured out stuff at home, but it would just be practice because I got beat out in the field, I think. I never owned a table, but I bet I can beat most people who do. We just had a lot of time as kids back then I guess, and a better social environment.

Here is a good one, one that you can build on. With a push or pull shot set up, you "fake practice" the push or pull once or twice without touching the ball. The person is convinced you are just doing to simply push or pull the ball, (depending on what side the ball is sitting). From there you actually have at least 3 different shots, and it pretty much depends on how they are moving their goalie guys. 1st. Just do a normal push or pull to the other side of the goal and see of they can block it. You don't need to do a fake shot or two before you just push it, but why not? 2nd Now set it up the same, do 2 or 3 fake push shots with out touching the ball, but on the last fake, actually hit the ball with your end man to the other side of the goal, and hit it in with the middle guy. They are expecting a "push" and not a "tap over", and won't eve see it coming. Now, you have those guys moving. For the next shot, same placement, do a fake and if they move, you can hit it straight in with the end man, and even do is slowly for the most embarrassment. 3rd. After a fake or two, and a tap over, they most likely will have the goalies bunched up on the other side, (since you made a shot or two there), and you can simply pull it back to it's original spot, and hit it in. But, in order to do any of that, you have to get good at passing the ball from your 5-man to your 3-man, so you can get the ball in the first place. I also played with a friend who would just sit there with his "fairly fast pull shot" set up, for a few seconds longer than normal, and their attention span would fall off enough to snake it by them. He called the shot, "Old Bessie". Not super fast, but very accurate, was one of his trusted shots.

I have played with rubber coated balls that are easy to control and pinch, to more of a slippery ping pong ball that is good for teaching ball control, and banks the best. One was white, and one was red. If I remember right, we ended up asking for and liking the red balls the best, (like the color of the old school rubber dodge balls), This was in the 80's, as the Tornado replaced the corner ramped tables, (one was a "million dollar table".), we played on. Sweepers are nice, because they give you more shot options. They can be a little frustrating because they sometimes guide shots into your goal, that would otherwise miss. @HowToLou 4 жыл бұрын
I see. Ok, you are getting the wrong impression from the video. I did everything as slow as I could so you could see exactly what was happening. In a real game, the ball is moving anywhere between 5-10 times that speed. And at that speed it does not stop on a man unless you have the skills to catch it. Playing foosball on a cheap table is fun, but there is a lot of randomness, because none of the surfaces are perfect. Imagine trying to play basketball with an egg-shaped ball. It would go randomly everywhere and be hard to control. A professional foosball table removes most of the randomness, and you are playing with and building real skills. In the long haul, that is where the fun is. The table may be “easy” like a round basketball, but your opponents are not.
