Great book for a beginner . kzbin.infoUgkxD-QRFQz730FJEh4f9BYSf-nkIMIC9hL_ this book really starts from the beginning, as in it explains what basic tools are and how to use them. But when it gets to the art of creating joints and how and when to use them this book really starts to teach you something. At least that was my experience.

It is so sad to see this episode again now knowing that Austin passed away. He was such a promising prospect as a tradesman and a welcomed addition to the show. Adding the apprentice dynamic to the show added new life to the format. Continued success to Bailey and Nathan, who has now joined the show full-time, on their construction trade journeys.

Thank you This Old House. I like the smooth approach used here. But if someone is adding a wall to an old house, beware! Old houses rarely have the uniform height between floor and ceiling as this new construction has. In my experience, each stud will need to be a few fractions of an inch longer or shorter than the stud next to it. Anyone working on an old house may be better off attaching the top and bottom sill to the ceiling and floor, then measure and fill in the framing in between.

a better way to check wood straightness is to keep it on the pile of lumber and turn over one side at a time. this way you check trueness against the stack which is fairly straight. much easier to see the bow or hump against a straight board while lying on the board. nice tip with the template norm. thanks.

Yeah ,in UK most studs partition walls are 3x2 and that is tough if u make the studs to exact dimensions to lift up as you go 4x2 ,6x2 the diagonal as you lift gets bigger so you won't be able to just bang it in ,just wondering how much experience ppl cut short without making it too short
@GGg-ug3jr
@GGg-ug3jr 4 жыл бұрын
@@georgelfc1 what you could do is take whatever dimensional size lumber you're using as a stud and caught it to the overall exact height of what the finished wall will be and then lay it down and practice lifting it as though it is the wall and you will see if it will fit or not. Then trim a little off if you need to until you get the right height and then you will know your total height you will need. Or you can cut it plenty short and lifted into place and use shims between the bottom of the ceiling joist or strapping and the top plate of the wall.

Lumber prices have had a volatile year. After steadily rising through the end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021, lumber prices skyrocketed up to an all-time high in May, driven by historic levels of demand and mounting supply chain issues.

First time I’ve seen a door header built like that???…That cool in other states or what?…Flipped on edge with ply in the middle works…But sandwiching together two 2x6’s?…Huh?

It's not load bearing. No need for a true header.

I have always wondered how these guys got these jobs. I sit here watching headers put in sideways and I am amazed. All heders boards should be on edge with a 1/2 inch filler board nailed in between. This is the simplest of construction rules. Would you lay a ceiling or floor joist on its side? Or nail two of them together and lay them down sideways? Of course not! The fibers of the board are what create rigidity the wider the board the greater the rigidity. And if you are not putting in a header for strength then why put in two 2x4s? It adds nothing. Very amateur, this is what I would expect from a beginner. I'm sure other journeymen will know what I'm talking about.

This isn’t a load bearing wall so there is no need to install a structural header here
@purplehayes5718

@@cblhs24 Tell me why use two 2x4's then? Why not just use one seeing It's not a load-bearing wall and two 2x4's laid on their side offer little if any more rigidity than one? And why use jack studs there is no pressure down because it's not a load-bearing wall? And would it be ok for me to lay the 2x12 headers on a two-car garage on their side below trusses on a peak-end where the truss design is already load-bearing? And why do those truss end 2x12s still sag in time even when placed on edge? So, why do you think numbnuts used two 2x4s on a non-load-bearing wall and then added jack studs that are holding up nothing. Is this how you would teach someone to construct a home? So often the most Incopatent people are teaching others. Please respond I would love to hear you justify what he did and how he knows what he's doing.

The extra 2x4's are not there as a load-bearing header. The extra 2x4's help with making the opening more rigid and creating more backing for drywall and finish trim.
