I retired. Got my free fishing license. Found my rod & reel (tag sale 30 yrs ago). Walked up the road to a brook, put a hook & little worm on. Managed to dip the worm in the water & bang! Hooked a big one! 🐳 But but the bail got stuck and I couldn't reel it in. Pulled out a 6 inch shiner & threw it back.. Walked home & searched for help on Daiwa 7350RL & landed here. I followed your video to a "T". Now it feels like a brand new highly tuned machine! Works perfect! Except for a squeak squeak squeak when I turned the crank. Finally figured out the handle needed one drop of oil & it's perfect. So quiet, I'm confident I can sneak onto church property at night & try for bullheads in their pond (JK about that, but I did when I was a kid). Thank you so much for the excellent instructions on how to refurbish this reel.

Nice diawa I have a 7300 model was my grand fathers reel guessing it's about 65 years old still works like a champ to this day.

Yes - these were 1960's reels - simple design and built to last. Daiwa's first spin fishing reels were made in 1955, but I do not know the lineage and when your model was introduced. The style is circa 1960's and probably mid to late 60's - Dennis

Hey Dennis great video!I have a Berkley 612 N.O.S. in the box I bought at a flea market cheap,other people were making offers to the seller so I could'nt get the money out of my pocket fast enough.I bought the reel on "looks alone" never seeing if it spun or the bail worked, after all it was new in the box,the crank handle was still sitting beside the reel with all its original paperwork! What a surprise to find out after I got it home and installed the handle it did'nt move AT ALL!!! I can only assume as was the case for your Daiwa that the FACTORY grease went sour???? I know you use a PENN precision grease ,I've been using the Abu-Garcia silicote reel lube, Is there any advantage to using a slicone based product??? I know you steer folks away from using auto type greases,but i've got a tub of gramps old wheel bearing grease thats gotta be 60 years old and it's still gooey! any idea what makes grease turn to cement??Thanks ,keep the videos coming!!

Hi Peter - thanks for watching!. My recommendation is that any grease made for fishing reels should be used. They are specifically formulated for the type of metals, water resistance and other properties specific to fishing reel wear and tear. I do not recommend auto greases. Some are too which, like Grampa's axle bearing grease, some too thin, some clog, some lose viscosity, etc. Those grease deal with other issues like high heat, not slip and slide. Grease does evaporate over time and that causes it to dry and become more like tar. That is why I recommend a minimum annual service on reels. Any longer and it can cause damage or degrade performance - Thanks for asking - Dennis

This reel seemed like a great candidate for a ultra sonic bath. But I know that wasn't the point of this video. Good video showing people a little bit of elbow grease and reel grease/oil gets most reels going again.

That's a thought. The grease was so hard, that I just went with scraping and stayed ate the table to complete the task. The grease turned to a paraffin like substance and acted as a wax glue. You know the reel was sitting a long time for that to happen. - Dennis

Dennis, another great video. I nearly bought one of these but the owner thought it was worth more than I did. I have another question for the master. I have a Shakespeare 2062 that I cannot get the rotor off - my recurring problem. Looking at the nut holding it on there is a part under the nut that seems to restrict the nut to only turning clockwise. I have taken it apart twice now as much as I can and I cannot quite get the reel as smooth and loose as I think it ought to be. Any chance you could do a video on a 2062? It’s a great little reel but I can’t get it right. I love the old worm gear reels! You really helped me with the Daiwa 7000C and DAM Quick Super. I need your advice again! - Christopher

If you remove the bail cup lock washer and remove the rotor cup then you have access to the main bearing. Get small snap ring pliers and remove snap ring then you can remove the pinion shaft and bearing. The bearing is what makes the retrieve smooth or not smooth. I order bearings from Ebay to fit the Penn 712z,712,710z,710. ( get "new" Penn bearings)These bearings are a perfect match for the 2062. I have five 2062s and have replaced these bearings and they are smooth as glass when completed. Oh yeah the Penn bearings are saltwater approved so you could use the 2062 for light saltwater applications. I watch Dennis's videos and they inspire me to repair and restore reels the correct way. Hope this helps!

@@mikemcelveen2973 Thanks for the help. I will pull out my 2062 and see if i understand what you mean about removing the rotor. I am partially blind so things take me a while. The saltwater bearings are a great idea. I have a couple Seawonder reels that i use in saltwater but i clean after each use.

Dear Sir can i soak a reel of that bad grease in a ultra sonic cleaner with some carb cleaner
@2ndChanceTackle4 жыл бұрын
I don't like carb cleaner for grease removal and I do not use it in an ultrasonic cleaner. Try putting the reel in an ultrasonic cleaner with hot water and dish detergent to loosen the grease before you try the other degreasers - Dennis

I've got a few dozen working vintage reels I've been working on. Next project is to strip and refinish an old Penn SportFisher with green Hammerite. Your videos are so helpful and easy to follow. It's a true Masterclass for people just starting out. I feel like I should pay you, they're that good.

Thanks for the comment Jay ad thanks for subscribing. WD40 can work wonders. I use it a lot and it does free a lot of hopeless reels. Best wishes - Dennis
