How to Freeze Blueberries

Blueberries, whether fresh or frozen, are a low-calorie and nutrient-dense source of dietary fiber. For best results, lay out your blueberries on a cookie sheet and freeze them. I use salad spinner to wash blueberries well then spin it to get lid of most of water. (no need to be perfect al all) then just put them in ziploc bag make it kind of flat. (does not have to be single layer) Then result is same as what she did here. I like to wash them well before freeze them.

To get most of the air out of the bag, use a straw to suck out the air, Pinch the straw and bag together, and when you have finished removing the air, quickly slip the straw out and seal that little bit of zip-loc quickly.

We have been doing this for years with almost 70lbs of hand picked blueberries. The issue is, when you defrost them in room temperature they become all wrinkly and bitter.

Gently using the spray nozzle at the kitchen sink will not harm berries.

In my experience, the texture of blueberries suffer terribly when frozen. They become squishy, mushy and secrete purple juice all over the place when defrosted. Totally ruined my desert one Christmas when I topped a custard tart with them. Just awful. Never again! I'm going to dry them instead from now on.

why do they have to be flat and spread out? cant you just put them in a deep container and freeze them that way? i always wondered why they have to be in one layer?

*LadyScorpio39* Very good question ... one that I asked my grandmother about when I was growing up. She taught me that sometimes small ice crystals will form on berries if they are stacked in a plastic container, and then they end up sticking together. Freezing berries on a flat surface will prevent this as they will be solid; that way you can grab & go as you need to use them.

Put picked berries in ziplock and freeze. When frozen, suck out air with straw. If you wash them, you was all the good stuff off the skin. Why oh why complicate this easy task?

Whole Foods has them at a stupidly low price right now for Prime Day. If you've picked your own and they're organic then you've beat me. I only buy organic. I can't freeze them on a cookie sheet like all these pimping kitchen ladies show. Maybe when I get my summer home in the Hamptons I can freeze them in my extra freezer... hahahahaha! Try eating AIP or paleo. YOUR FREEZER IS FULL!
