@@WSlopeAggie According to my long-tenured choir friends, natural vocal fry is the octave or two below the bass register. The fry Hungry Lights is teaching us is what they called “falsetto fry”, due to it being higher than natural fry but having the texture and granulation of natural fry.

Now I can jump in again, I got my false cords alright, they will take less time to bring back up to speed, but the fry has been an issue for me to get back. fun fact, listening to this through my studio monitors, the effect change around the 12 min mark scared the shit out of me i thought someone walked into my apartment. But also, really enjoying this. Ive been trying to "scream" for a long time and i know its been damaging my voice, i used to do early Death covers but it hurt and it got to the point where any time i would try it would just make me cough like crazy. Zero training and Zero technique. Im going straight from this video into patreon for the full course. Love you Justin, loved your videos since I was a teen, I had to stop harsh vocals for years due to a tumor in my tubil tonsil which impeded my ability to scream for well over 7 years. I was in a hardcore/thrash crossover band as a vocalist for years beforehand and I'm having to relearn screaming all over again. Dude nobody else put the way you did by starting in chest voice and opening slightly. This was the key I needed because I was squeezing the fake fry too hard and it was hurting even tho it kind of sounded right so I didn't know what I was doing wrong. Excellent approach taking it THROUGH THE SPECTRUM of chest to fry to head, this helps understand the entire voice and what it's doing in context, not just that one part specifically. Thank you!

I used to layer a lot of vocal tracks for screams but since i learned to scream properly, it sounds so much better to have just a lead scream that stands out, and maybe a couple more very gently layered in the background for a little bit of wideness/thickness

This is a little different. Justin has improved a lot as a vocalist and has changed how he does his vocals and how he teaches them to others to a both safer, and more professional approach. I still enjoyed his old "how to scream" videos a lot, and he kicked ass even at the start of the Hungry Lights & Tallah era, but in these newer tutorials, the information is more thorough, and more accurate. He actually has a video where he puts his past self on blast, correcting misinformation and bad advice in one of the old videos.

Love the video! You've got a very similar timbre to Chester. I'm also a classically trained singer who has been learning to scream. I'll be diving into more of your videos; you’re a great teacher. My only concern is that some of your definitions seem to counter those of Melissa Cross who has worked with and trained some of the best screamers. She says that a fry scream shouldn't be loud but just sounds loud because of the overtones. She also says that the mixture of falsetto and "meow" sound creates the fry scream whereas singing full voice then opening up like you do at 06:50 is a hybrid scream (which is what I learned to do studying my favourite metal vocalists). I interviewed Melissa on my podcast, @@BridgeTheAtlantic, a few years ago and she demonstrated the different methods. (It’s the most popular video on our channel if you want to watch it). Anyway, let me know your thoughts. Maybe you’re both doing the same thing but explaining it differently. Seeing as I’m a singer, I obviously don’t want to hurt my voice on my journey to screaming. 🤘🏼

No offense to Melissa Cross, but I do not like the way her technique sounds, and I do not agree with a lot of the things she says about screaming, in general. To my knowledge, she is not a touring vocalist. I have toured with a few vocalists she has trained (like Levi from Miss May I), and their voices did not hold up very well on the tours while mine was strong as heck even when I got sick. I think that speaks for itself. I am sure Melissa Cross is a nice, old lady, and I wish her the best, but I do not think she is the be-all end-all of harsh vocals. That is just my opinion.

That is the part that takes lots and lots of PRACTICE! It is the hardest part! You are not gonna get it in one day unless you are very talented/intuitive. It will take weeks or even months because you have to TRAIN yourself to feel that spot, lock it in, and push. One fry screaming tutorial is not going to magically make you a pro screamer. You have to PRACTICE the stuff I talk about at 14:30. It is like drumming or guitar or drawing or literally any type of skill! It requires practice, effort, and time! "If you quit while you suck, you'll suck forever."
