After finally having gotten pumping down pretty well now, I would add that the foot angle going into the pump motion is super crucial, especially when starting a pump on flat terrain and not going down a slight decline. You have to rotate (not tilt) each foot, similar to how you do when you turn, the difference between that and the turning rotation will be that your legs are pulling apart (or coming back together) instead of staying in-line with each other. You can see Jeff doing it when he pumps, but I don't think that was verbally described, so just pointing it out here.
@Cred1Tor
@Cred1Tor 2 жыл бұрын
You said what the difference is but how do you actually achieve it?
@theKiwii
@theKiwii 2 жыл бұрын
@@Cred1Tor I'm just starting to learn free skating myself, but just from looking at it, the rotation of your feet comes from rotating your entire leg; it doesn't actually happen with the feet. It's actually the hip joint that rotates. You can practice rotating one foot at a time while standing and slightly lifting off one foot and rotating it (without the skates), and then replicate those motions on the skates while slightly rolling downhill. I'm at the point where I can pump a little bit and continue my momentum on flat ground but after 20 to 30 minutes, my legs start to get sore and I lose a lot of stability making it hard to keep my balance. It really takes practice training those muscles you're not usually using much while walking, cycling, or even inline skating.

@jsrhedgehog9981
@jsrhedgehog9981 3 жыл бұрын
@@itiso1123 It's less of having your legs flexible and more of you having built up leg muscles to keep your fleet from splitting apart. One thing I recommend to do is to go to a pole and split your legs as far as you can on your skates, then try to pull them together. (Your legs will get sore and that's part of the process). Also, where pants that allow for flexibility and not skinny jeans like this guy

Someone on my college campus taught me how to pump. Basically, he brought me to a railing, had me position the line of my skates away from eachother and push my lead leg forward and pull my other leg backward. Doing so propelled my entire body in one direction. He made me do the inverse of the that position and it also pulled me in the same direction. I had always been doing an "S" motion with my legs and wondering why I'm not gaining or maintaining speed, but practicing my friend's method and then blending it with the "S" motion made it less straining to propell myself and allowed me to climb slopes. The "S" motion was indeed helpful, but I think it's beneficial to start with the fundamental science of pumping so that beginners actually know what they should be striving for

@jsrhedgehog9981
@jsrhedgehog9981 2 жыл бұрын
@@tytan12 remember, the angle that your feet are at is perpendicular to the line of your wheels. So when your feet are like this \ / Your skates are lined like this (/ \). When I say to push/pull your feet forwards and backwards, I mean one leg is forced directly in front of you and the other is forced directly behind you. There are 2 phases to the pumping motion. Pushing out and pulling in. Pushing out has your feet separate forward and backwards while pulling in is having your feet come back to your body and goes past your center. (So not like jumping jacks where your arms come out and stop at your sides, but more like your arms start at your sides, come out, then twist past your body as they come in.) To start, you want to be on level ground while holding on to a wall or a bar. Smooth ground is ALWAYS best and space doesn't really matter for this excersize, so your front porch (if it's smooth is a good spot). So assuming you are riding standard (left leg in front), you will want to be in the pushing out phase. (L= left foot, R = right foot) Your body is facing the wall and your "forward motion" will move you to the left. Your feet will start out like this Feet L-- -- R Skates L (-- --) R Angle your feet in the "out" position as shown below. Your skates wheel line should always be perpendicular to your feet. (Your skates will be a lot less resistant to moving while you are in motion compared to standing still so don't worry about it.) Feet L \ / R Skates L (/ \) R Push your left foot DIRECTLY forward and pull your right foot backward at the same time. You should feel both of your skates moving left as your legs spread apart. THAT is the first phase. The second phase is literally the opposite. You can start it from the neutral position or from where you left off, but it is the same. Feet L / \ R Skates L (\ /) R Pull your left foot behind you and push your right foot in front of you. If you are riding goofy, do the exact opposite of what I said. Note, although this is effectively HOW you pump, and is what you should practice, there is a lot more to it that is hard to describe and is something that you'll just get a feel for. Because doing this won't get you going as fast as others and will put a LOT of strain on your legs. Doing the leg motion by itself is impractical anf there are ways you should swing your arms and body to make it more efficient. (I highly recommend the JMK video on pumping up large hills and inclines for reference.) But focus on getting your coordination for doing just this at the moment.

Rollerblades can outspeed skaterboards on flat ground. Freeskates are certainly slower than skateboards (at least at the skill level that I'm at). I'm certain more experienced free skaters can reliably keep pace with skateboarders and rollerbladers. Freeskates just require more effort to propel yourself than skateboards and Rollerblades. Although, from what I can remember, free skates are fastr than Ripsticks (at least from my experience as a kid.)

Exactly why we developed Proformance wheels! So smooth out of the box. Classic wheels definitely still have value for many tricks

This is my second day trying them (off brand from Amazon) and the tips you and that other kid that looks like Michael Cera teach about turning toes in and heels out is complete bogus. All I achieved was looking like a jackass. Its impossible to turntoes in and heels out as that motion would not move the skates a all if you were to just stand on them still. It feels like that to you while youre doing it but in reality you do have to treat it like a Ripsurf or ripstick. ITs about tilting forward and back but because your feet start to go away from center of gravity, it feels like your turning your feet in and out but youre not as that motion simply can not be physically done in the skates. For example if the skates were wet, and youd try that toes in heels out technique, youd be skidding over the grip tape, which is NOT good. Nex time ill try them, ill just keep in mind he surfing techqniue and im sure ill actually move!

You bought a knockoff from Amazon... You're now fighting a learning curve and bad quality...

@@jmkride Yeah they kinda suck. You guy's skates definitely look wayyy better and I can tell quality is good. I'll buy a pair and see if I notice an instantanious difference and if I learn to skate that same day I'll even promote your skates bruhs.
