perfectly stated AJ... plus traction changes what can be done. every jump out there is different for a million reasons. how far or what gear is only a small part of the equation. but i can tell you my story on estimating distance. as a kid one of my jobs was to hold (or mark) one end of a 100 foot tape measure as my dad walked out ahead to survey property lines. we did this for weeks each spring. eventually i could tell within a few feet by just watching dad walk ahead, as to when the tape-end would show up next to me. about the same time i got into jumping bikes. to this day i can estimate any jump between 30 and 90 feet and be pretty much exact by looking at it. so it's not that difficult with a bit of practice. but step-up's and step-down's do confuse me a bit.
