Symptoms: Machine won’t agitate, the drum won’t spin, water leaks, or if there’s an odd noise during operation.
Tools: 1/4” nut driver, 5/16” nut driver, Torx T-15 screwdriver, flat blade screwdriver, putty knife, ratchet with 3/8”, 1/2” and 3/4” sockets, a pair of side cutters, spanner wrench.
Optional: hammer.
This GE made Washer Transmission and Brake Assembly replaces the following older part numbers on General Electric, Hotpoint, RCA, Sears and Kenmore Washers: 279566, WH38X0055, WH38X10001, WH38X10003, WH38X1001, WH38X55.

Excellent video, very helpful step by step...but one step missed on reassembly. Installation of the tub bearimg washer before installing the transmission and brake assembly. Fortunately I caught it before I got to the tub nut. In and back out no problems. Again very helpful. Thank you.

My agitator bolt is being real stubborn right now so I sprayed it down with pb blaster and letting it sit for now hopefully by doing that it’s easier to loosen 🤞🏾smh

As I now see someone else commented, mentioned, you FORGOT the NYLON WASHER that goes on TOP of the TUB BEARING before you put the whole transmission shaft back on 😤! See 8:09 and 9:07-9:14. Luckily, we caught it before getting the inner tub back in.

Good luck getting that hub nut out. I bought a heavy duty electric 1 inch impact tool and a deep socket just for these jobs. I believe the socket is 43 mm but not totally sure. Going by memory from many years ago so check into it before buying a socket. I've heard (but not actually tried) that a line dissolver ( like CLR) squirted onto the nut 24 hours before removal makes the removal easier. Also when doing this job replace the tub seal

I've tried clr, and naval jelly and bought a "plumbers multi wrench" spanner ... Still not budging.

Your memory is sharp, it’s 43mm and it took me 2 days soaking it with everything without budging I had to get my 30 gallon compressor in and a monster 1/2 Thor impact to get it off. Then I failed to remove the inner tub as it was welded to the transmission off the the outer tub I ended up dumping the whole thing in the trash

I used a 1-11/16" deep socket, a couple of 1/2" drive extensions with an air impact and it came out easily.

On this exact trans, the inner brake plate and larger outer mounting plate. Should they be flush with one another, so that the black plastic plate lays over the brake and flush on the mounting plate? Mine was raised about 1/8 inch. The black plastic plate did not lay flush. I put it together anyway. I get a creaking noise in slow agitation. It was a new transmission.

That's a mode shifter and is a totally different design . The wiring in that machine is totally different.

WCSE4230A0MM agitate ok but wont spin, motor check ok, turn transmition pulley by hand, turn ok in agitate direction, but only turn about 1/4 turn in spin direction then lockup wont turn any more, appreciate any help?

Wouldn't you install the tub seal after you install the transmission to prevent seal damage?

Its easier to insert the seal with out the transmission shaft in the way

+timothy kohrman The tub seal is the main seal in the middle of the tub. It seals where the transmission goes through the tub. Water is funny but if you are sure it is coming from that area it is probably the seal. Thanks for the order!

+timothy kohrman It is reverse thread so make sure you are turning it with the arrow, clockwise. These can sometimes be on there pretty good I would soak it with penetrating oil and let it sit for a while. Since you are changing the transmission you can carefully heat the nut with a heat gun to see if it helps. Be careful not to over heat anything and damage any plastic in there. We have even seen them so bad you may have to cut the nut and the lower split ring off.

If the agitator spin one direction only continuously what is the cause of problem

+buzahra ful If the upper part of the agitator does not agitate back and forth then the gears inside may have failed. If this is what is happening you may have to replace the whole agitator, depending on the manufacturer.

I guess it depends on your tools and knowledge. I took mine apart with a 1-11/16" deep socket and 1/2" drive air impact. It has never been apart before.

I hope someone can help me. I have a washer that I am unable to turn the coupler on the transmission clockwise it will only turn counter clockwise BUT with motor and transmission out of washer both spin freely. Since I am currently unemployed I have to determine if its the transmission or something like the brakes dragging or basket drive assembly. i noticed the cam has no play outside the washer but while turning the basket drive assembly counterclockwise to get it back up into the washer it is difficult maybe its supposed to be? Also once in the washer there is alot of play in cam. One other thing I noticed was once the transmission was in the coupler would spin clockwise a little bit but not enough to turn the tub then I would hear a click and it wouldnt turn anymore and it never turned far enough for the tub to spin. Is that click something locking up with the brakes or in the transmission? i disassembled the brakes took of the spring to make sure they move freely. There was no play in the brakes so they seem okay to someone who doesnt know what they are supposed to feel like. Also we replaced the transmission fluid with 90 wt. Ugh someone please help we have been watching videos and searching the internet for a week. We replaced the capacitor before figuring out it was bound up somehow. thanks in advance for any help you can give.
