Oh Ceri, Ceri, Ceri, I'm having tears in two ways. 1. You have saved my gel press. I have 6 of them and I have two that I saw have exactly what you said would happen if you do not store them correctly. So I cried for them because as you know that they are not cheap to replace. But you mentioned that the little marks will eventual go away. Now the second reason for teas, these are happy tears because you have now saved my other 4 gel plates from getting ruined . Oh my friend I am so glad that you made this video, this was the best thing that you could have done for all of us. No one goes into such detail in explaining all this useful information that we need to have. You are a Gem, can't thank you ever so much for your help and doing this for all of us new Gel plate users. Your friend , Naomi

Thank you Naomi, there’s no guarantee the marks on your plates will go but over time they may diminish.

@@CeriGriffiths You said not to use a heat tool because the plate will melt. Couldn't you use that to melt out the blemishes? If a plate would be ruined anyway then you could take the risk, couldn't you? Or did I make a mistake in my thinking?

Ceri, Hello from Jayton, Texas. I just wanted you to know what an inspiration you are. I have had scrapbooking supplies for years and have only used them a couple of times because I didn't know all the things that could be done with them. I now have my gel pads and can't wait to get started. Your teaching method is exactly what people need to get inspired. I love the way you explain things and demonstrate different methods. I have played with my 5 X 7 gel plate exactly once and had a wonderful time. I am in Arizona and found my paint drying very quickly so I bought an extender that helped it not dry so fast. But, I ended up using way too much paint. So I bought another plate so that I could brayer the extra paint onto it. Seems like that should work. Haven't played again, but really want to. Got both of them at Hobby Lobby for $9.00 with a coupon. When Hobby Lobby was clearing them out, I got an 8 X 10 really cheap. So lucky! But now I have to go check on them to make sure I didn't do any of your no-no's. Thanks for the video. We all needed to hear and see it. By the way, diluted Murphy's Oil Soap will make your brayer and its plastic holder look like new. No scraping needed. Oh, also, thanks for the shower curtain idea! ❤

Thank you so much for starting straight from the package. Quite a few videos claim to be "the basics" and, while they were awesome and informative, they weren't for someone who barely knows what a gel plate is or how to use and care for it. I can read about stuff until I'm blue in the face, but until I see it done or do it myself, nothing sinks in and gets remembered. Your demonstration has shown me a few things I've done that I shouldn't have and has helped me improve a few things that has made playing with my gel plates a lot more fun and exciting. I also appreciate seeing the smaller size plate since my craft area doesn't have room for anything bigger than 5 x 7. You are the best, Ceri, keep doing what you do and by-the way......I LOVED your Alaska trip videos as well. It was kinda like being there with you.

I made gel plates during the pandemic as children weren’t allowed to share resources, so this way I was able to let each child have their own (12 children as just key workers children were in school) … they LOVED printing and turned their prints into collage houses. The home made gel plates did the job, and lasted 3 years being used by the children and re-melted when needed. However, I still prefer the bought gel plates as they produce better prints of leaves and feathers. The home made ones took marks very easily, but were good enough for what we needed at the time.

You are a wonderful instructor. I've had a gel plate for a while and I really wish I had had this information when I started. I've wasted a lot of paint and feel lucky I haven't "injured" my plate! I have a 5x7 but I have kept the acrylic plates on it. I will definitely pull those off and use them for holding and transporting. I had watched enough videos to know to keep it in the clam shell. Some other things I knew to do or not do but I always remember better when I know the why and I am always more successful when I know the reasons behind the why to do it a certain way. Thanks for sharing from an "intermediate" user! ❤❤❤

Thank you so very much for this basic walk-through on gelli plates. It was exactly what I needed. Yes, there are many gelli artists out there. HOWEVER, information delivery style is extremely important to many of us and often we just want to know what to do in the simplest terms so we CAN play. You afford us that with your sensible information delivery style (you keep saying you are not a "teacher" which makes me chuckle). I have made a separate playlist of specific art videos, this is in there. Once deep winter arrives post holidays here in Minnesota, I can re-watch and give it a go. Thank you again for this great information delivered with Ceri-the-Crafter style. 😊

I've made gel plates. You have to store them in the fridge, and you have to throw them in the trash after a few weeks, because they do grow mold in time. I don't enjoy the mess and fuss. Buy one. In the long run, the initial expense will offset the cost of continually remaking them. I've never been happy with my prints, so I feel that starting from the beginning will be helpful.

That was so helpful Ceri, whilst I'd say I'm an experienced watcher I'm not an experienced do-er. I was wondering how do you know how long to rub the paper for, I feel like it's a bit of a silly question but as I'm not sure I thought I'd ask, thanks again for such a helpful demo.
@CeriGriffiths Жыл бұрын
That’s a good question, sadly I can’t answer that with a finite time, it’s a little like stamping in that you need to give it enough time for the ink to absorb a little into the paper, the paint needs to adhere to the surface of the paper when printing.

Thank you -a packed tutorial! I am no longer worried that I didn’t keep the protective acetate, understand image transfer, got my head round layering repeatedly on paper v. monoprinting, & learnt about paint types. Loved the first effect - blooming/crazing - with high flow on your new plate. Will that only happen when the plate is new? Thanks Ceri 🙏
@CeriGriffiths Жыл бұрын
Helen, the blooming effect will happen when you’ve got a clean plate and high flow or liquid paint, it will always be a bit hit and miss however I do know some artists who rub a little mineral oil into the surface of their plate then wipe off any excess in the hope of creating blooming.

So I put a piece of paper on my brand new gel plate and 2 Days Later the whole page was filled with the oil so I decided not to do that not knowing it was okay to do. If I decide to use the paper again will it be okay for the gel plate

It should be, all gel plates have a small percentage of mineral oil on their surface, it’s one of the components that aides the release of the paper, when you have a brand new plate it will have been freshly conditioned and some of the oils will leach into paper. Using the same paper just means it won’t leach out any more oil.

@@CeriGriffiths so it's okay to continue to use copy paper? Not to worry about the oil?
