Just my input ..When the shaft is lying between the centers clock over the peak of the diameter with a dti from the wheel head casting raise the tailstock to achieve equal reading @ both ends with shim or paper before you start it takes the guess work out of deciding how much to lift the tailstock to achieve a square (crisscross) face also place the shim at both sides of the tailstock base as mentioned below I agree avoid pushing the carrier with the driver & pull other wise nice video Don....

I learned that technique a long time ago. Usually dish the wheel with norbide and go to town.

Nice...talking about safety...your driver is put on wrong...should be pulling on the dog not pushing, [flip it over]...it can lead to serious consequences if the dog becomes loose, putting on the other way, [pulling] even if the driver becomes loose the operation remains safe.

is the surface of the wheel dressed to the same angle as the taper of the dead center on the tailstock...or is the entire grinder rotated vs the bed, or something else? bc u less SOMETHING clever is going on, I don't understand how the 1 or 2" thick wheel can manage to grind the end of the rod without impinging on the dead center.
@SuburbanToolInc8 жыл бұрын
+Travis J I Corcoran No, the bed turns and allows you to remove the taper. You're absolutely right about the wheel impeding on the dead center. It's important to be conscious about leaving enough clearance.

I don't think Don quite understood your question. If you look carefully, the left end of the wheel *is* dressed to a conical knife edge, to wrap around the 60 degree portion of the dead centre.

A half center would help a lot.
@Sketch19947 жыл бұрын
I think it isn't either. Like sander suggested that's probably a relieved center.
