Thanks so much! :) For boot camps, the upenn, flatiron, and springboard cyber security bootcamps are the most popular with the best job prospects from what i've seen. In terms of online courses, professor messer is the GOAT lol - he also has a youtube channel but i believe he has online courses as well, specifically for diff certs/cyber concepts. I'd also check out this udemy course on ethical hacking, it has lots of really useful info - The Complete Cyber Security Course : Hackers Exposed! as well as these two courses on Coursera - IBM Cybersecurity Analyst and IT Fundamentals for Cybersecurity. Hope this helps :) ! Here's also a general vid on interview topics for cyber security for a brief overview of the things you should know to help you prep - kzbin.info/www/bejne/qXesk4OJZ9V2sM0 Good luck with everything!

the instructors at the college i went to to learn networking and ITsec pretty much were saying that pentesting is something that you can eventually do after like 5-10 years of experience but lately i've been seeing people on YT going into pentesting after a year give or take a year lol idk if this is a recent phenomenon or what : / they basically pushed defense, networking, and certs. something i've learned is that chasing certs can hold you back from learning. happened to me

Hey, for sure! i think first starting with hackthebox to see if you enjoy pentesting and since its free, then you can try studying for the CompTIA Security+ certification which is a beginner cert that im currently studying for as well! Otherwise signing up for Capture the Flag tournaments when they happen can be really helpful too (similar to hackthebox)

@@WithSandra great video ! What's the minimum certification that companies demand us to have for getting a job in this field ?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 3 жыл бұрын
@@emersoncoelho7187 hey! I wouldn’t say there’s a requirement but I’m actually making a video on security certifications for beginners, but the main two that come to mind are security+ and the SSCP. Many firms also look for prior experience or any CTFs that you’ve done on your own time to show you have the skills, if you wanna so pentesting there’s Pentest+ that might be good training/studying material for you to look into as well! Certs mostly help you stand out above other candidates but interview prep for security roles will probably cover a wide range of your expertise/experience !

Hi Sandra! I’ve been watching a lot of your videos. I have a Bachelors in Crim Justice and wanted to get into cyber security. I looked into going back to school for my masters but it’s so expensive. I have no computer experience and have hit a wall on what to do. I want to get into cyber security without going back to school. Where can I begin? What certifications should I start off with/obtain? Ive also heard bootcamps are a waste of time…. Thoughts?
@BexTheBestest
@BexTheBestest 2 жыл бұрын
Look into the CompTia “trifecta”, just studying for those certifications will build a good foundation to get into security, and look for a job in general IT to build some experience working with computers. Also when you are ready, you can look for cyber security jobs within the criminal justice system/military. With your degree I think it would help you stand out.

@WithSandra

Tbh if you’re going into security, you wont need to know too much about data strucs/algorithms, the best thing to learn is a scripting language like JavaScript or python and knowing how to read code/what a function does. Also kali is a really good place to practice, hands on experience is always more beneficial than just learning about a concept imo!

I dont have a specific site but i would look for the top 5-10 roles you’re interested and then go from there when looking for specific companies to apply for, linux shouldnt take up too much of your time if you find the list of top 30-40 linux commands used for pentesting, get familiar with metasploit, and then spend more time learning python but make sure you can also at least read JavaScript code

@WithSandra
@WithSandra 4 жыл бұрын
Yes for sure! You should try to look for companies with some kind of rotational program (TAP, SEP, etc) to get your foot in the door with experience and really even if you dont have 2 years of experience, you should apply anyway because there arent enough cybersecurity professionals to actually fill those roles so more companies will be willing to give you the benefit of the doubt if you can show your experience through hackthebox, ctf, hackathons, etc. I really think IT or help desk roles are great ways to get your foot in the door to show you have troubleshooting and problem solving skills if you’re still in college as either a part time job or internship since those are still relevant roles that can eventually help you get something full time!

Honestly there’s a lot of different opinions about this, when i talk to people who’ve been in cyber for 10-20 years, they dont care what certs you have as long as you have the skill lol, but i also feel like when you’re just starting out, a cert definitely gets your foot in the door even if its just because it makes you stand out in a stack of resumes. I just passed my security + cert this past weekend and im planning on making a video on all the resources i used and how I studied if you’re interested! Probs posting next Wednesday, but you definitely do no need to go back for an advanced degree imo, that’s gonna cost way too much time and money vs just studying for a cert, using kali, practicing the tools, and applying to entry level security analyst roles

@WithSandra
@WithSandra 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank! I got a certification from my college for computer security as part of my degree which had 2-3 security courses I took and I was able to talk about the work i did in those classes (disk imaging/recovering deleted files from digital forensics, exploratory/unit testing from my QA class, etc), since this was entry level they weren't expecting a huge amount of experience but I think it definitely helped that I was able to go to a tech conference and interview directly there for the job rather than applying online since it can be less competitive at a conference to get an interview spot!

Many corporate jobs for cybersecurity from what i've seen still care at least a little about diplomas but i think a lot of it also goes on experience as well. For example, starting out you could do bug bounties and make money through those by finding bugs on apps that company's post online or working on open source projects/tools for security, as well as CTFs, HacktheBox, etc. If you don't plan on getting your GED, i think a boot camp could help but only if you find one that's worth your money, otherwise most things you need for the job you can learn for free through a few google searches/youtube

I got my BS in information science & technology, which is similar to CS but more practical courses (web app coding (C#), proj management, QA, security courses) while CS was focused on data structures/algorithms/etc. My school had a security certification program i was a part of so i got to take 3-4 network security/digital forensics courses which was helpful in finding my first job but was still not as in-depth as when i studied for my security+ cert exam (which i have a vid for if you’re interested!). I would say degree wont be as big of a factor if u have a beginner cert, some CTF/hackthebox experience, and being able to talk about any hacking experience you have. There are also many ppl in cybersecurity with degrees in psychology- bc a lot of security is focused on human behavior, phishing attacks, etc! Hope this helps :)

Any advice for someone who wants to become a cyber security engineer?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 3 жыл бұрын
Being proficient w/ javascript or python will be important for scripting! Learning the general concepts around infrastructure and architecture will be important too since you may be working on systems at a high level as well. Good luck with everything ! :)

If you do CTFs/hackthebox/security challenges at hackathons on the side, you may be able to get away with not getting a cert if you are a CS major, however it is very helpful to have at least those experiences listed above (which are free to get since they are all online and open to anyone) to make you stand out. Many schools are coming up with cyber security majors that focus on security so a certification is always good to get your foot in the door. I didnt get a nationally recognize cert but my college had a computer security cert that I completed just by taking 2-3 extra cyber-related courses so maybe you can see if your school has that, otherwise a generic online cybersecurity cert program may be better for you if you don't have the time to study for an official cert like sec+, it is very material-heavy lol, good luck with everything!

Do you know of an affordable school to study cybersecurity?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 3 жыл бұрын
I would consider either an online bootcamp/program or get an associate’s at a community college in cybersecurity first before you consider doing a bachelors, then getting a certification will help you get your foot in the door without paying too much $$!

Do you have a degree in comp sci, or cyber security? Do companies really care that much if you're going towards a security related job?
@WithSandra
@WithSandra 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly I don't think the degree matters as much as long as it's somewhat tech related, the rest can be based on your experience, I was an IT major, my school actually just created a cyber security degree program in my sophomore year so lots of state schools are actually just setting up these programs so as a company, i wouldn't expect a cyber security specific degree but I do think taking courses like network security, mobile security, intro to pentesting would be great for your resume if you're going to go for a comp sci/IT/MIS/any tech major that isn't specifically cyber security, good luck @ D B :)!
