Great video and cool that you show it with a TD-30, since most people do use this one. However the hi-hat scale is present in many Roland Modules. So the principle is universal. I also like the zoom in and out. Very well made and a great knowledge source.

Thank you, thank you. This is such a helpful video for someone fairly new to electronic kits. I really appreciate the detail and thorough explanations. I think the pacing is good too, I don't feel like I need to watch it again - although I probably will. I've been playing the Yamaha RH-130 high-hat which, considering most of the other e-high-hats I've played, isn't really that terrible, but I ... OK, it's pretty terrible. Ha Ha! Actually, I was able to get it dialed in pretty well, but it's not in the same league as the Roland high-hats. I'm about to spend more money than I should on a TD-50KV and SD3, and I've been watching tutorials and review videos to reassure myself it is going to be a good thing. Your video definitely helped me to feel more confident that I'm going to be happy I make the move. Thanks again.

Great tutorial. Thanks for posting. I have finally got my VH-11 triggering smoothly in SD3. One thing I found is that once I'd got all the articulations of openness set where i like them, the only thing still not right was the pedal chick sound was too quiet even if I stamped on the pedal. I fixed this by adjusting the velocity curve for the 'hi-hat closed pedal' articulation. Lastly, doing all this tweaking to your preferred default kit and then overwriting the default project is a must so you don't have to do this all over again the next time you run SD3.

you can simply save all midi settings as your own custom settings.. you can make limitless versions.. and they can be imported as well.. I have different MIDI hihat settings and snare settings, depending on the chosen SD3 kit and depending on the song I am doing... Note: I have now ditched the VH-11 controller as that simply does not work well enough with SD3 samples.. i now use FD-9 but with the VH-11 cymbal mounted on a hihat stand (with removed pedal!).. it does then not move up and down with the pedal, but it does move naturally as I set the feather to very soft.. and the triggering is 200% better regarding transitions between half open to half closed and all in between.. nb: I am demoing this to Roland sometime soon.. within 1-2 months (they requested it and they might do a video of it) so maybe they will use the input.. or not.. who knows.. but just a tip to get the best triggering of samples on a hihat.

Thank you so much for creating this! It’s shocking that both Roland and toontrack haven’t been bothered to make this work better out of the box seeing as both brands are the industry standards that many will use together. I’ve had several Roland kits over the years and the Hihat triggering is terrible without all of these tweaks. It’s also annoying that it takes this much fiddling around just to have a decent feel! The Roland TD30 cost $14,000 in Australia when it came out, imagine spending that much money to have a clunky system out of the box. Anyway I’ve ranted enough, thanks again for this video!

I wish it was as easy as this! I have just bought SD3 and it's anything but plug & play! I play the 2Box Drum-It 3 through the Focusrite 18i20 and the sound is magical, with zero latency. Enter SD3 and I now have awful latency of 0.25 SECONDS. It's like listening to a double trigger, but only hearing the 2nd sound! Add to that, my 2Box Drum-It 3 Hi-Hat worked opposite way round in SD3. So this programmed mapping to know manufacturers MIDI map is clearly not working. So as you see, SD3 is just not cutting the mustard when used with 2Box Drum-It 3 and Focusrite 18i20. And you would think two companies from sweden would at least be talking to each other in getting their MIDI mapping right! I'm back to playing without the SD3 altogether now.

Its not enough to ONLY play with the sliders in SPD3's hihat control, which is exactly what I was doing. After diving into the range numbers on the TD-27 module, at least as a starting reference point, to match up with the SPD3 hihat range numbers made way bigger of a difference than I expected. Again, many many thanks for your time and clear instruction on this one Mike. Maybe now I can hold onto my $1000+ for the comically overpriced digital 14D hihat a little longer eh?

Steve Mitchelmore Yes, no problem. On the drums page there’s a little button in top which is called „articulations“. Just click on the hats to highlight them, click on that „articulations“ window, then a list with all articulations for that particular instrument shows up. Just disable the ones you don’t like and you’re ready to go. By the way, using this window gives you even more flexibility. By clicking on one articulation, let’s say „Open 2“, you can then even adjust the volume or trigger setting for that particular articulation without affecting the rest.

This is an unusually thorough and instructive tutorial compared to the normal KZbin faire. Danke shoen mein freunde! Now, maybe others will be challenged or inspired to make a video on a slightly different setup. Although I'm not in crisis, I am frustrated and pissed as fuck that I can't dial in the subtlties of my hi-hat technique. As far as that technique is concerned, I do a lot of what I call 'breathing' where I'm playing 1/8th notes on the hi-hat using wood strokes while releasing pressure of the pedal causing a subtle vacuum of sorts that gives the hi-hat ride texture.

Hi Mike, Great videos from you and so helpful, thanks a lot! I am daring to ask you for some more general advice as I have just started using SD3 and am a bit desperate. I am using a MacBook - connected via USB with the Roland TD-50 module. I do get the signal into SD3 and can listen to my playing by plugging headphones into the MacBook. But my original thought was, that it should be possible to get the SD3 layered sounds directly into the TD-50. I just don't know how, i.e. which settings I have to use at the TD-50 (tried out anything already). Here’s some details of current settings: - In SD3, it says in the Audio/MIDI-Setup for "Audio Device": Device type: CoreAudio; Output Device: Built-in Output (there are no further options for both than those) - When I change in TD-50 the Driver mode from „Generic“ to „Vendor“, no signal is transmitted anymore to SD3 - TD-50: I have set under MIDI-Setup „Local Control“ to ON (when setting "Off", I don't hear anything anymore in TD-50) - I had recently installed the latest driver from the Roland site Could you please help me and describe how you are doing this? Are you using an additional usb audio interface? What other settings have you used under MIDI Setup (Basic, Sync)? Thanks so much for any advice - also from anyone - and best regards from Frankfurt, Germany! :-) Cheers, Michael

Mike, new subscriber and new drummer as well. I recently got the TD 17 KV and I’m loving it. As you have loads of experience on this subject, would I better served to invest in a standalone high hat and better cymbals (like the kvx) or get a vst like sd3 or ezdrummer 2? I’m an at home player only and wish to eventually record. Thanks in advance and I enjoy listening to your playing.

Hi, thanks for your question. Well, it all comes down to the quality of your gear. A software like EzDrummer maybe sounds better than the module, but when you have crappy gear that’s not set up correctly or properly, the software won’t respond accordingly. So no matter what HiHat you use, you have to make sure to set it up properly. But in general: the better the gear, the better your results will be, of course.

I really do appreciate your video and the help it provided. I own a TD-25 and i coupled it to SD3 as well as the sounds that come within the Roland module are really cheap. After struggling for quite a long time i managed to configure both sides really well (the 3 zones on the snares work fine - thanx to one of your vids) ... except for the hi hats for wich cc values are from 0 to 90 on the TD-25 module. The articulations of the hi hats are only available if a note number is assigned to them. The note number for different openness are not available in the module. As i tried everything you explain here, may i ask you what kind of values must be entered here? I guess it must not be linked to the values of the dots in the SD3 monitor...? All my open values sound like openness 6 value although all tips and edges articulations are turned on. I tried everything. Thanks for your eventual answer.

Hey Thomas, as I never owned a TD25 module, I could just guessing. When your module just provides values up to 99, did you try to adjust in SD3 accordingly? Like assigning "Open 6" to the value 99, then "Open 5" to, let's say, 90 and so on? Does that work? Furthermore, you can use the envelope settings on the "Drums" page (found on the right side) to finetune the response.

Hi Mike ✌️.... I got all the 6 hi-hat articulations playing really well 👌between the open and close (Actually my hat pad is a 2 zone Hi-Hat, so I must say, I got all 12 articulations of the hi-hat playing properly between the open and close of the pedal, which is really good). But the sad part now is that, I don't get the closed pedal(chic) and the open pedal (splash) sounds when I only open and close the pedal or HH controller 😔(I mean without hitting the Hi-Hat pad here). What must I do? My HH pad is actually mapped to tip trigger and edge trigger articulations of SD3. I think something is going wrong there with the pad mapping. The HH controller is mapped to CC#4 of course and hope that must be right. For me, the Splash is still okay to forgo and I don't bother much even if it sounds or it doesn't. But what about the CLOSED PEDAL sound? I believe that is really needed for the playing. Should I be reassigning the pads to something here? Is mapping the HH pads to Edge Trigger and Tip Trigger fine? Please do let me know. Thank you!!! FYI: Mine is an Alesis DM10 MKII module.

I am using the VH-11 together with a Roland TD-15 module. This combination sends CC ranges of 0..90 only and there is no way to reconfigure it in the module. So I had to adjust the CC range in Superior Drummer 3, which might be your solution too.

Thanks for the great video Mike! One question: is it possible to take the Openness 6 articulation 'out of circulation'? For me, I don't know that I would want that level of openness when I take my foot off the pedal. If one can't disable that articulation all together, I suppose the only other option is to physically adjust the HH pedal so that the controller never fully reaches 0. Is that basically it?
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes, you can do this. Just right-click in the HiHat slot, go in the top right corner to „All articulations“ and just disable the ones you don’t like. By disabling „Open 6“, the software will automatically trigger the one below, in this case „Open 5“.

Hello... Great explanation there. One question I have is, I am contemplating to buy the SD3. But my edrums are pretty basic (Carlsbro SC D600). So, would I be able to seamlessly use/exploit superior drummer no matter the make or model of my electronic kit? Meaning, be is a top of the line Roland or the $750 model which I'm possessing, would the sounds generated be the same with both these kits when interfaced or setup properly with the SD3 VST? ( here that I'm ruling out the quality difference of the pads which should surely be evident between the kits and the discomfort of smaller pads on the $750 kit). The crux of the question is, would I be able to bring out the similar sounding grooves or licks from the SD3 VST no matter the kit used?
@MikeLuke
@MikeLuke 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s true. For triggering those sounds from SD3 it doesn’t matter at all which kit you use. Because after all it’s just a MIDI note you send to the software to trigger a sound and SD3 actually doesn’t care which kit you play. ;) However, as you stated, the difference will be how good and accurate the pads or the kit in general will translate your playing.
@clementtytube
@clementtytube 4 жыл бұрын
@@MikeLuke definitely agree and Thanks a ton for your valued response on the SD VST. Now, that makes me to confidently purchase SD3 vst and invest time on it and carefully tune my Carlsbro ekit to trigger SD3 properly... But like you rightly said, the Kit itself is the player. At least, true with me as this is the only kit that I possess or possessed and I don't have any manual kit or better edrum kit. All that I learn and play is thru this ekit (Carlsbro CS D600- Made in the UK). This kit is their top of the line though. But someone else have to compare their stock sounds with that of a $ 2k Roland or Alesis Module. But as I said I rely on VST. So the module doesn't matter to me. Not to let down the Carlsbro kit completely, it does have great value for money and definitely lives more than it's value but it is still not a perfect kit and has its own cons. Any chance you have tried the CS D600 ekit before and stock module tones of it?

Hi Martin. I always felt the VH-12 being a significant uprade, to be honest. Not only it triggers more smoothly, but it also feels better while playing, because you actually have two parts, so it opens and closes like an acoustic pair of hats. Roland discontinued the VH-12 unfortunately, but you still find them in used condition on eBay. The VH-13 is basically the same.

Set "closed tight" a bit higher in the hi-hat pedal control (10:38) if it's not too much. I had the same issues with my TD1kv. If you have an older drumkit or when you have your current drumkit for a while, make sure there is no dust or other build up between the mechanism at the hi-hat part and/or the pedals itself. My friend had that happening on his VH13's.
