I have been in aviation directly for a total of 10+ years. I am a machinist, running 3&5 axis and also working in a true machine shop. Ive just turned 50 and really want my A&P License, should have long ago. I'm not ex military. Is a pell grant the only aid available for me?? It seems to me the 1st thing I should do is see what tickets I can get signed off by past employers.....? Thank you for your service and the video! Hope to hear from you! Tracy Hall
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
Honestly, you'll probably do a lot better as a machinist. But if you want to go down that path, you can use the Pell Grant if you qualify. You have to find a college near you that has an A&P degree program. vocational schools usually do not have access to federal education assistance. College and vocational programs are usually 8-5 because the FAA program requirements are a minimum set of hours. They usually can't be done with a full time day-job, but programs may vary. You probably can't get tickets until you complete the program, or have 30 months experience within the proceeding 3 years. That is dependent on your previous experience. Maybe finding a job as a machinist in an aircraft production or repair capacity might be the best track to an airframe license. Working for an engine manufacturer might get you to the powerplant side of the house as well. I'm sorry to be a Debbie-downer, but the FAA makes it pretty difficult to get into the career-field unless you commit, which is hard to do without giving up on everything else. That doesn't mean there isn't a way, I can only speak from my experience. If you do find another way to make it happen, I would love to hear about it so I can pass it to the next person.

What sre some funding sources for civilians. And do airlines hire those without the licence.
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
Nathan Kendall I will first day, the funding sources for civilians are the same as for military, the military just ads some funding sources. So you have all the options provided by FASA, private loans, and scholarships. For vocational flight there is really nothing except private loans through programs like ATP. For degree programs, once again the funding options are as listed above but there is more available than for Vocational Flight training. Airlines are starting to look at zero-to-hero programs like exist in eurpoe. Lufthansa has one in Phoenix. Other than that, it’s a pay-to-play system. You put out close to $100k and hope to get hired at the end.

Hi. Great video, thank you for uploading and sharing the information. One question does the license has a validity or due date? Do you have to renew it from time to time?. Thank you.

No renewal, but there is a caveat in the law that says you have to be actively using it to be considered certified.

@@BurnoutsAndRotorblades oh nice! I was a KC-135 crew chief for 6 years ( Isochronal inspection for 5 and flight line for 1) and I've since cross trained to a different career field. I'm currently looking to keep my licence up to date since my switch. but before i got accepted to cross-train I had an interview with Cessna in Wichita, Ks for a ROM Technician, and they wanted to start me at 20$ an hour. I thought this was fairly low considering I have a bachelors degree, two Associates, an A&P licenses, a Ground radio operating licenses, and 5 years of inspection experience... lol but i wasn't sure what to expect. I was hoping for at least 25$ an hour. The low starting wage and the rarity of employer call backs, when i was looking for a job, prompt me to stay in the service and go a different route (cross-train).
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
That is a very broad question and depends completely on your experience and qualifications. The best way to answer your question is to share my experience. I made $32/hr day one of getting out after 10 years AF experience as a Jet Engine mechanic with a modest amount of GA experience and extensive experience on both the C130 and HH60. But I was hired by a company who had a lot of aging jet engines and I was a hot commodity there in Las Vegas which has the highest starting A&P wage in the country. I've since moved on and make less hourly but more annually. It was likely location and maybe a bit of timing. The company I'm with now starts new A&P's, straight out of A&P school, out at $26/hr. I know there are many like that. General aviation doesn't pay much. you are compensated better somewhere where your other assets; Airframe experience, understanding of military T.O.'s, and Security clearance come in to play.

So I'm a senior in high school (a girl and short) do you have any advice on where to go from here. I plan on going to school for it but still I need all the advice I can get
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
Being a girl and being short has no bearing on whether you can be a mechanic. if you need proof, look up Faith @howtohelicopter on instagram. Now, being in high school. . . You have two options, military or technical school. There is a lot to know about both. If you have set on the school route, I would ask around about different experiences folks had with different schools. I'll be honest and say I don't know much about that route because my experience is all military. Because females make up a pretty small portion of overall aircraft mechanics, I would bet that other females that have gone through that process would be the best to get advice from. Don't think I'm sluffing you off though, If I had some real advice to give, or you have more questions, shoot! If i don't have an answer, I'll find someone to give you the right answer. First reach out to the girl I named above and see what advice she has to offer.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it's kind of an all-or-nothing deal. The 15 year gap is also a a deal killer. You are basically looking at all the same options as someone getting into it from the beginning. An aviation maintenance school would be my first option, and if not, working in an aircraft repair station. Getting a job at an aircraft repair facility that doesn't require an A&P might be easier depending on your last 15 years of work experience. You can take the airframe and power plant tests at different times. From the day you take the written you only have a year (I'm pretty sure it's only a year) to take the oral and practical. Hello, and thank you for this wonderful video! Just one quick question, is there a list of tasks required to get your powerplant side qualified? If so, how do i find this list?
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades3 жыл бұрын
The FARs are a bit ambiguous (ecfr.io/Title-14/Section-65.77) on the experience requirements. However, it would be a good idea to look over the powerplant handbook here for a general idea (www.faa.gov/mechanics/become/test_requirements/). Each FSDO has their own requirements, so call your local one and ask if they have a list that they want to see before signing off your 8610-2. Some are there to help, some think they are the gatekeepers to the A&P mechanic universe. I also talk about the differences between FSDOs in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a6e9iHp_Z8iKeJY

You don’t need have to be citizens or permanent resident
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. Have you experienced, or do you know of a scenario where a non resident has an A&P? Here are the FAA requirements for non-citizen or non-resident alien: I'm not a US Citizen, and I live outside the United States. How do I get a mechanic's certificate? You must meet all the requirements listed above for United States citizens. You must also meet the following requirements: Demonstrate you need a mechanic certificate to maintain U.S.-registered civil aircraft and you are neither a U.S. citizen nor a resident alien. Show the examiner your passport. Provide a detailed statement from your employer saying what specific types of maintenance you preformed on each aircraft, and how long you performed it. Provide a letter from the foreign airworthiness authority of the country in which you got your experience, or from an advisor of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), validating your maintenance experience. Make sure all the documents you provide are signed and dated originals. Pay the fee for the document review. www.faa.gov/mechanics/become/basic/#:~:text=You%20must%20get%2018%20months,Approved%20Aviation%20Maintenance%20Technician%20School.

If i have my CCAF in aviation mx, would i meet the requirements for the collegiate A&P? would i be applying for collegiate over vocational? want to get my A&P this year. very helpful video, man thanks so much.
@BurnoutsAndRotorblades4 жыл бұрын
That's not how it works. The Collegiate versus vocational are both A&P vocational programs you have to attend. One is just with a "degree granting institution" (college) and one isn't. This is another situation where the CCAF doesn't do you any good. In fact, it hurts you because you can't normally use MilTA to pay for associates level classes once you have completed the CCAF, or any other associates degree. If you are an active duty maintainer, the path is to get your tickets and take the A&P prep course. If you can't get the tickets with your AFSC and TBA records, you may have to do the JSAMTCC program. I hope this all helps. Good luck, and if you have any more questions don't hesitate to ask.

I'm 40 years old I put off getting into the aviation business because I was making so much money in Telecommunications and now I really want to try to get into the aviation industry and spend the rest of my working life within that sphere it doesn't seem like the business wants to help me out at all it seems a little more Cutthroat then say Construction.... applying for an entry level Aviation position I don't know what else I could write on a resume that would persuade someone to hire me I have literally worked on the only airworthy Consolidated B-24 Liberator on the planet I have used every single hand and power tool you could think of including an optical time domain reflectometer..... perhaps I should lie on my resume and say I've only worked at McDonald's for 6 months maybe then I would get a call back I don't know man I did find your video very interesting though very informative I don't know really what I was thinking contacting you in this KZbin maybe I was thinking you would go bang on doors in your neck of the woods and see if there was some sort of small mom-and-pop operation that would take on a older gentleman who has a work ethic for some sort of paid apprenticeship in the aviation community.... it's just so very discouraging but you see a lot of Industries doing the same thing I mean look at the trucking industry you literally have to go to a school to drive a truck to become a truck driver same thing with cutting hair the work force is regulated to death it almost seems like you have to put yourself into debt in order to start making money it's a disgusting vicious cycle.
