Finding an apartment in the city is probably one of the worst experiences in New York. However, it is a necessary evil if you want to live here. In this video, I'll go through how to find an apartment, which areas in the city are cheapest, how to avoid large fees, and how much money you should save/expect to pay.

It’s more difficult to find “no broker” apartments because owner/landlords like to use them as it costs them nothing. Renter pays. Also be careful with Craigslist. A lot of phoney listings and scammers. Studios are usually tiny. Nothing like you pictured.

A lot has changed since this video was made. (Great information BTW, Kudos Sarah) 1) Application fees are capped at $20 2) Maximum security deposit capped at one months rent 3) Landlords can no longer require you to pay anything more than first months rent + deposit upfront 4) Security deposits must be returned within 14 days of tenant vacating the unit 5) Brokers fees might become a thing of the past: On 02-04-20 NYDOS effectively banned brokers fees for tenants (basically swapping the fee to the landlord) On 02-10-20 NY Supreme Court Judge passed a temporary injunction on the ban opening up a legal battle for March to decide its fate.

Lol I like the reaction to the $3700 a month rent. That’s way too much. Also- you’re on point about Queens. I had friends who lived in NYC temporarily and most rented in Staten Island or Queens. But overall, renting is terrible. Sometimes, you have little choice but I pay $989 for my mortgage in Florida. Can’t complain at all!

I just went to NYC for the first time the past weekend, my partner had a pre MBA event and I tagged along. There is a possibility for him to be moving there f0r 10 weeks next year and I like the OutPost Club idea. And maybe in the future, we might move there, it will depend on where he can find work after the MBA. We liked the city, is really beautiful is just too crowded for my taste. I'm from a small city in Mexico (Colima, you should visit :P ) but my paternal family lives in Mexico City and NYC somehow reminded me of there, and although I love the city when I visit I don't know if I could live there, so I don't know if I could live in NYC. Will see how life goes, so thank you for this video is very useful.

My wife and I are considering a three or four month stay in New York later this year. We live in England. Would we need to use a broker to handle everything for us? How easy is it to obtain a short-term rental as non-USA citizens? Mid town or Upper West is our preference, but we would consider other areas. $4,000 per month would be our budget. Any tips on this, Sarah? Your videos are great. Your enthusiasm is awesome!

We just secured an apartment in Manhattan and decided to use a broker. We were able to secure an apartment for $600 less than the "market price" because we started the leasing process before the apartment was even listed! If time is important, it might be worth it to use a broker because they can focus the search to exactly what you want. Great video!

Very helpful. But the continuous misconception that Manhattan is this unliveable and extremely expensive place is ridiculous, and so not true. There are A LOT of amazing Studios and 1 Bedroom apartments below $2000 in Manhattan, in great buildings with no fees and with amenities. Don't be lazy. Go out and look for that affordable apartment. Lower East Side, Chinatown, Yorkville, Upper West Side, lower Chelsea and yes, even the billionaire haven that is the Upper East Side. YOU CAN LIVE IN MANHATTAN. Many people who aren't rich do live in Manhattan, in quite nice apartments.

I have never wanted to make my own video more that I have eight minutes into this video. People please do your own research this woman does not know what she is talking about. There are more affordable neighborhoods than she mentioned, for example Washington Heights. Next, a Significant portion of Manhattan apartments are only available through brokers, A “no-fee” apartment just means that fee is averaged into the rent, if you average that out you’re going to pay more in the long run as opposed to just paying a brokers fee upfront. I’m going to stop my rant here, because I can go on and on and I don’t really know if anyone cares.
