To get clean audio you need three things: good mic placement, clean preamps on your audio recorder and a mic with low noise. Even the most expensive recorder will give bad results if you have a hissy mic, and vice versa. So have your mic and recorder on the same level of quality, they're equally important. Good mic placement is free so remember that always, no matter what equipment you usr ;) (Oh, there is a fourth thing: do your best to cancel out all the noise you don't want to hear.)

And also TELL your sound guy to tell you to do it again. Sound guys so often act like whipping boys. No, they are half of the movie. Make sure they know that.

I think you nailed the top 4, but perhaps a tip in post: use a bit of compression in dialogue and if still need to separate dialogue from ambient & effects, make sure they aren't sharing all the same frequencies so much, give them a little different EQ for further separation

Thanks! Quick question. If I was shooting a straightforward sit-down interview indoors, with, say, a Rode NTG3 boomed close to the source, would you recommend using a normal foam windscreen to reduce plosives, etc or just having the microphone bare to have slightly better audio quality?

Important question: My camera audio is at 4800 khz but using my audio recorder I am able to record at 9600khz. Which one should I use for my recorder sample rate, same as camera audio that I use for syncing, or 9600khz?
@DeityMicrophones6 жыл бұрын
48Khz 24bit is what your audio recorder should be set to. 96Khz is for oversampling like when you want to slow down the audio in post or for recording sound effects.

can you help me? i can't decide between 120 d vs 300 d ...and between mini and full size light dome ....i also need a fill light and a hair light in addition to the key light ...currently on my channel i am using a lowel kit ...but it is tungsten and way too hot for a kitchen youtube channel ...what would you recommend?
@quarter8thfilms306 жыл бұрын
Start with a 120D and the full size dome, it'll provide more then enough light for your setup. You can add either two 672's or the Tri-8's depending on your budget. They would provide nice fill and hair lights, in a pinch you could also use the M9's as a hair light - or a Mini20.
