How to get from Helsinki Airport to the City by Train

In this video I will show you how to take the train from Helsinki Airport (HEL) to Helsinki City & Main Station!
The excellent service links the Finnish capital's main airport by using 2 commuter 'loop lines' with service every 7-10 minutes, and all for just over €4. It's truly one of Europe's BEST airport trains.

Worth mentioning: if your destination is outside the HSL area and you wish to continue by train, you don't need a HSL ticket at all; you can buy a VR ticket from the airport to your destination and it is valid on this local train as well. Change in Pasila (towards Turku) or Tikkurila (all other directions).

A tip from the local: if you ride a taxi, either choose an Uber or Lähitaksi or Taksi Helsinki. These three are the most reliable companies here, and also recommended officially.

Does Helsinki suffer from rip off taxis?

@@DiscoverByRail Sadly, yes. The taxi law used to be very strict, but after it was abolished some years ago, the whole business turned into a mess. Suddenly anyone could be a driver; you didn't need to follow any regulations concerning skills, language or pricing. The newly emerged drivers were aggressive towards each other and passengers, and intimidated some women drivers with threats and even violence. Finns cut down on using the taxis at all, so something needed to be done.

I've had good experience with FixuTaxi as well. Menevä has a bit different pricing model, but can work for you. Uber and Bolt are ride-hailing services, so quality may vary, but they are also cheaper.

1:06 this. Travelling around Norway and Sweden, I was baffled at how every main airport had perfectly valid public transport available, but only the "con" express buses/trains were advertised, and the actual public transport was nearly impossible to find. Needless to say that both services were similar but the private express options were twice as expensive. Glad that Finland is not falling for this shameless trickery. I would expect such tourist traps in other countries, but Scandinavia??? Unbelieveable.

Helsinki Airport's ring rail is basically a regular commuter rail line, so no extra charge

Not only does finland have a really big loading gauge, we also have wider than usual track gauge. (its 1524mm, whereas the normal gauge is 1435mm)

The trains operate from 5:30 - 1:30. What if my departure flight out of Helsinki is at 6:40 AM in the morning? Is there an early bus or I must reply on taxi/Uber?

There is a 24H trunk route (orange bus) 600 from City Centre, which operates like a train so no need to show a ticket when boarding. It’s better to look up the schedule on the HSL app as schedules may vary on different days.

Buses run 24/7. As mentioned the 600 express runs from the station to the airport at least every 30 mins, and up to every 10 in the day time
