Im two years late, but I just recently went to nyc a week ago in April 2021, and landed in Newark. Took the airtran from there to the city, and it was great! Also, on my way back to Newark on my departure, I pulled a shortcut on the Uber prices. Since I still had money on my metrocard, I took path at Heralds Square to Hoboken, and then took Uber from there. Instead of $53 from my midtown manhanttan hotel, I cut it down to $23 by just taking that path train into Jersey. Takes a little more planning, but where there's a will, there's a way!
@abdullahalrasheed3946 жыл бұрын
You should have mentioned that there are three options to get into the city from JFK, you have the railroad, A train and J train (subway). The A and J trains are only USD 2.75, and they can practically take you anywhere in NYC, as you can switch trains later for the same price. The railroad is more expensive and takes you only to one place in NYC (Penn Station).
@aabirdas77382 жыл бұрын
Yeah the E from Jamaica is actually easier and faster because it gets to midtown from Sutphin Boulevard which is connected to the AirTrain, directly. It crosses under the East River and avoids the entire borough of Brooklyn and connects Queens to midtown so you can get off wherever your hotel is or come to Port Authority and take a taxi from the taxi stand, there are always cabs 24 7 which is pretty cheap if you are in midtown or thereabouts or walk from whichever stop is closest to your hotel or hostel.

Great video. I just wanted to add that one of the cheapest ways from EWR is taking the free shuttle to EWR's North Area and then taking bus 107 to Port Autority, from there it takes 30 mins and costs $6. Definitely not a very common route used by travelers, mainly by locals and employees but works like a charm. From JFK, the cheapest way Ive done it is buying a $32 unlimited ride Metrocard (which I had to buy anyways) at a kiosk and then go to Terminal 5 and take local bus Q10 to Lefferts Blvd/Ozone Park station and switch to the A train to Manhattan. This way you can skip the extra $5 for the Airtrain and your trip from the airport is already covered by the unlimited Metrocard.

Love the vid 👏🏻 Actually love all your videos! But I think for these suggestions for tourists/people taking public transit when coming to New York, these options are really only viable for people coming alone, with minimal luggage, and time to spare. Because, if you are coming with two people, it’s not much more money to get an Uber or taxi. If you have luggage or are older, it’s incredibly difficult to carry those bags around the subways (less than 25% of all subway stations have elevator access). And if you are on a timed schedule, the subways often run late (especially when having to transfer 2+ times). So, IMO, I’d say take an Uber or taxi to get to Manhattan if you have 2+ people, have luggage, or want to get to the city in good time.

I completely agree! I had my children with me, we all had luggage. The subway assistant in Jamaica Queens was unfriendly and unhelpful. Bought a subway card only for it not to work. Uber saved us at that point.

JFK pro tip for the frugal: Take the Airtrain to long term parking for free, walk 15 minutes to Aqueduct Station (this costs roughly 12 minutes net) then take the A for an hour. You get to take in beautiful N. Conduit Ave.

Can you get more specific on the roads involved here? It looks like there are areas with no sidewalk. It appears that this walk would take longer. But I think you have something here.
@Schmeck1906 жыл бұрын
@@willieturner There's a sidewalk. Get off the AirTrain at long term parking (penultimate stop, before Howard Beach), walk 500 yards north on Lefferts Blvd, then go west on North Conduit Ave for 1000 yards until you reach the Aqueduct North Conduit stop on the A. It takes an extra 12 minutes but saves you $5. The walk is 15 minutes but the last leg of the AirTrain, plus walking down to the subway, plus the first leg on the subway totals about 3 minutes. Hence, net of 12. Not great if you have large luggage.

from LGA you could stay on the N, W trains. they go down 7th Ave at 57th St then continue through Broadway, they stop at times sq and Harold sq (not far from Penn). Also from LGA You could take the M60 to Lexington and 125th St get on the 4,5,6 trains to grand central or 125th St and Lenox and catch the 2,3 trains that run express to times square and Penn. AT JFK, If you're strapped for money and cant afford the LIRR from Jamaica to Penn, take the E train to Manhattan it hits most tourist areas and stops at port authority( near times square), 34th st (near Penn) and heads south on 8th Ave to World Trade Center. Another tip: if your hotel is in Lower Manhattan and you're arriving from JFK, you can take the J train straight into Lower Manhattan from Jamaica center.

From Jamaica, you also have the option of taking the E train to Midtown, which can be cheaper than the LIRR at times but does take longer. You can also take the J train to get to Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. Alternately, one can take AirTrain to Howard Beach and transfer to the A train there to go to anywhere along the west part of Manhattan.
@davidthaler70186 жыл бұрын
Wellll....these are not always the cheapest options. Consider: From JFK via Jamaica, if you get the LIRR City Ticket, then your total cost (including AirTrain) is $9, a nice savings compared to $15.25 for a peak LIRR ticket. However, it’ll cost you only $7.75 to use the subway, which also goes to Penn Station. The E train is express in Queens so it’s a pretty fast ride. For LaG, I think I saw you pay two one-way fares-one each for the SBS bus and subway. The Q70 SBS takes you to the subway at Roosevelt Av in Jackson Hts, and it’s a free transfer to the subway. For EWR, New Jersey Transit gets you to Penn Station in about 30 min for $13.00 (including the $5.50 AirTrain fee)-cheaper and faster than the bus. However, the LIRR is easier with luggage because you don’t have to use turnstiles, or drag luggage up and down steps getting on and off a bus. Some NJT trains are split-level, which means using steps with luggage, but if you’re lucky, you may snag a seat just inside the doors. Just adding some additional perspective...

Just a heads up for how Peak/Off-Peak works: If your train is scheduled to ARRIVE at Penn Station (Jamaica westbound TO Penn Station) between exactly 6:00AM-10:00AM, you must have a PEAK ticket. If your train is scheduled to DEPART Penn Station (Penn Station TO Jamaica and other points east) between exactly 4:00PM-8:00PM, you must have a PEAK ticket. Any other scenario is considered off-peak. People who take the Long Island Rail Road commute into the city for work from Long Island. Peak is during the peak direction in rush hour. If you're standing on the platform and see a massive horde of people waiting to get on the train, chances are it's peak. When in doubt, buy an off-peak ticket. If it did happen to turn out to be a peak ride, the conductor will just ask you to pay the difference. This is not the case for not having a ticket, you will have to pay the regular price plus a penalty of about $8 per person.

Depending on where you're going, you may take the M60 to Astoria or just take it to Manhattan to the 4/5/6, 2/3, 1, A/C, or B/D. I prefer that over catching the train in Astoria, but it depends on where you're going.
@TheHighRiseElevatorLover6 жыл бұрын
With JFK, other option is the take the E or A subway, just standard subway fare. Also, with LGA, if you’re going anywhere other than grand central, staying on the N or W is easier plus more transfers than the 7. Lexington Avenue for the 4, 5, 6, and r, 47th and 7th for the q, Times Square for the 1, 2, 3, 7, a, c, e, and 42nd street shuttle trains, 34th street Harold square for the b, d, f, and m lines, and 14th street for the 4, 5, and 6 again and the l.

Another tip I would suggest is a shared shuttle bus ride! I've done this twice from JFK through my airline (British airways) and they provide a go air link shuttle bus which takes you straight to your hotel door! It's quite cheap, usually £15 each way or something like that so cheaper than the public bus option. Only downside in my experience is that it does take quite a long time to get there especially in traffic (could be due to the JFK location though) and I guess it can be a little 'cosy' with the other passengers but a small price to pay really and being dropped straight at your hotel door is a dream! I think all of these options in the video are great however I'm not someone who would enjoy lugging around my suitcase and trekking all over the place after a 9 hour plane ride feeling less than fresh haha! Convenience over anything!!

2:00 Or, alternately, follow signs to the E, J and Z trains, and for $2.75, get a one seat ride to East Midtown, Brooklyn, and Lower Manhattan. (You could also ride the AirTrain to Howard Beach and take the A train from there)
@Mizuma100006 жыл бұрын
As a fellow NYer (Manhattan) this is pretty sound, straightforward advice. These are generally the "best" or easiest ways to do it, and of course there are always exceptions. There are certainly cheaper ways, but balance that against schlepping bags around, time, individual vs group, and fewer transfers. Excellent advice and high production quality!

At JFK, when you take the Air Train, please be sure to take the correct Air Train which will take you to Jamaica Station. There is another Air Train which goes in circle that takes you to every terminal within JFK. Sarah does NOT explain this in her video, and you will be pissed off at her (for missing the details) when you find yourself in the wrong Air Train.

It costs $12 on NJ Transit from most places in NJ to Manhattan.. I just did that 2 weeks ago. There is an airtrain from the NJ Transit stop in Nrwark to the airport, but the whole thing is still cheaper than Newark Express. The fact that she doesn't know about NJ Transit (which is what everybody in NJ takes into Manhattan and is more affordable than most anything else) makes me question the accuracy of. her videos.

fastest. Newark Airport. Once you land take an Uber or Lyft to Newark Penn Station (10 minute car ride for about $10). go for pool or shared and it can be cheaper than the Air Train. Once you're at Newark Penn Station take the 25 to 30 minute ride on the PATH train to World Trade Center (if going downtown or Brooklyn) or 33rd Street if going to Midtown or Uptown (or the Bronx) for $2.75 using a NYC Metro Card (they work on PATH trains). This train runs a lot more frquently, every 5 or 10 minutes during rush hour than the Air Train. I have done this from World Trade Center to Newark Airport using The PATH train and Uber/Lyft in just under an hour too many times to count. Avoid the Long Island Railroad or New Jersey Transit because Penn Station is a disaster. There are always delays. which means Newark Airport is your fastest way out of the city. The only fast way out of NYC to Newark air port is The PATH train. Dont forget there are two Penn Stations... one in Newark, New Jersey and the one in Manhattan at 33rd Street and 8th Avenue. Don't make the mistake of ordering the wrong one on Uber.
