A little about me:
Sean Daniel is a man. A man of simple needs and desires. And the one desire, no, the one NEED, that stands above all is to spread the challenges, joy and intellectual stimulus of music to people of Earth and beyond.
Born on the mean streets of upper middle class suburban Chicago, Sean learned the ways of the world through the dizzying heights of success to the lonesome depths of failure and emerged with the promise of a better tomorrow reflecting in his eyes and fiery passion in his belly.
He plays and teaches guitar on his KZbin channel where he regularly releases original music and projects to the adulation of legions of fans, who often compare him to Chris Pratt and one time Ryan Reynolds. He’s currently in the market for a nice leather jacket.

Hey man, I like it. There are good points you make here. A free little test rehearsal is a good idea.... among other things. Thank you. Also I've found that if you get together with a band, you can play solo easily between sets... get your name out. And, the venue owners see and hear that.

Great stuff Sean. Actually, "knowing a Kindred" can be generalized well to: GET TO KNOW OTHER MUSICIANS (Not guitar players!). Other guitarists won't give you their gigs! It's sad, but true that we're selfish. Other musicians need guitarists who don't hog the spotlight, can keep time, and who just show up on time. I remember feeling down once during a break after which another guitarist totally blew me out of the water. The singer came up to me, "See Mark? That dude couldn't help himself ... turning up, showing off. That's why you're my guy!" Well, it didn't make me feel 100% better about my playing, but I didn't see the other guy at my next gig, which helped a bit. :) On a totally different note, I apologize about not making the "beef" video yet. I've been traveling for work a huge amount, the ball took a bad hop, the Sun was in my eyes, etc. In any event, I had better make it this week else the moment will slip. Always enjoy your content brother!

Great video! When I first wanted to perform solo acoustic i went to a local bar that only had karaoke twice a week and no live music. I asked if I could play for free on another night and did so for the good part of a summer. It helped get my legs under me for performing and was a good experience. (If I recall he started giving me like $50 after the first few.) Another trick is to invite any friends that play or sing to do a song or 2 with you. They will likely bring people with them which adds to your total audience. 👍🏻

Being in a band which i quit and having a scheduled GIG is beyong motivating for actually learning songs to play correctly meaning as a cohesive unit. Otherwise we'd "just want to jam" on occasion/whenever which generally led to general disinterest in set list adhetence or members coming to rehearsal without having prepared or practiced anything specific.

You are right when you say it's not for everyone, my friend is vegan and she is doing great but I tried going vegan for a month and the whole time I was suffering, I got weak and never really got full, I told this to my friend within the first week of my experience, and she said that would go away by the next week, but as I said I tried for about a month. That's 2 more weeks after what she had said. So I kinda accepted that I need animal products on a genetic level, but that doesnt mean I need A LOT. After that month I had 1 piece of ahi tuna and I felt so good. I had energy for the first time in awhile, however fleeting, I realized I needed it.

That's funny, when I'm not at home in my familiar surroundings and somewhere different, I forget 3/4 of the songs I know. If someone is watching I like it, but feel like they want me to hurry so I play too fast and playing too fast causes mistakes. More live experience would help. AYEE SEAN DIDNT KNOW YOU WE'RE A BALLER! Basketball and music have always been my passions as well, though I only picked up the guitar a few years ago and starting taking it seriously last year, I feel like the two are connected in the sense that when you get in the zone and know your rythm the playing feels like it comes very naturally - and it's not only the most effective way of executing, expressing yourself, but the best feeling too, just from my observations. Do you have a deeper perspective on how the two interconnect, yourself having much more musical experience??

Does anyone know what percentage of your solo gig should be memorized? Like should I have music in front of me for the entire show? Memorizing lyrics is probably my least favorite part about performing, so does anyone have any suggestions or tips on what you do?
@joec8727
@joec8727 3 жыл бұрын
If you’re doing solo acoustic, I don’t believe it’s usually looked down upon to have a music stand in front of you for the whole gig. For me personally I prefer to only sing memorized songs because I just can’t perform them as well when reading a chart. That said I would sometimes have lyric sheets for new songs I was still shaky on. That also said, people will argue that keeping a music stand will allow you to play more songs and take requests etc and that’s a fair point.

Last night, this happened: my friend gets a fairly high-paying gig at a small bar. I go to watch. He kills it for four hours. When he wraps up, the organizer (who knows me), gets the audience to pressure me somewhat into doing a song. (The crowd is very small at this point. Half of them are not listening, the other half are my friends.) Perfect, right? Low pressure, friendly crowd. I decline a few times (I've only been playing for four years, and I've only done, maybe, 12 open mics in that time.) But I get on stage. Pick up the guitar. Strum a chord. It's not right. "Oh, I forgot to tell you, it's in an alternate tuning," says my friend who just did the gig. Now flustered, nervous, I retune, amplifiers on - bow-bow-bow. Bow-Bow-Bow - etc. I always practice on my Gibson LPJ, or SG. This was a 1940-something Gibson-knockoff acoustic guitar. Different scale length, and all the marker dots disappeared in the low light. Freaking train wreck. Forgot the chords to my own song. (F major, or F# major? Gahhh!) How do you recover from that? When I unplugged (after shouting "Goodnight! There will be no encores!") my friends were all saying, "Great job!" But they were saying it like you would to a toddler who just dumped spaghetti on his head. What's the take-away from all of that? Either I'll never play on stage again, or I'll go, "Well, it can't get much worse than that. Onward and upward!"

I've only been vegan 2 weeks and already people avoid me when I start talking! Hahahahahaha! I've played out a lot in Bluegrass, and old time country bands,( as well as blues, R+B, Rock, but not as much), and I have 2 ways to get gigs. Make a stupid CD the club owner can listen to, or audition and tell him how having a live music event there will translate into $$$. My buddy( the lead singer and rhythm guitar player and I would just stop into a bar that might like our style of music and just ask if it's ok to play awhile. Tell them if people start to leave, we'll go asap too. usually people are dialing all their friends telling them to get their ass down there though, and they throw $$$ at us! We are polished enough though, that people like to hear us. Ask a Bar owner if there is a time you can audition, tell him what you want pay wise, write it down and have him sign it, voila! You have a contract,( if he's amenable to the dollar amount.) Maybe tell him you'll start one night and play for 30 minutes and name a price, and see how people respond. Go from there. Be flexible.

Hey Sean, just curious and don’t want to start an argument or have this read in your Eric Cartman salty comment voice but as a vegan what is your opinion on people using guide dogs? I know some vegans are very opposed to this which I’ve never understood. I got a guide dog a few years ago because my kids are young and I wanted to take them places more safely than I could with a white cane. After experiencing travelling with a guide dog I don’t think I will ever go back to just using a cane but I don’t understand the opposition to this from some vegans. Pet dogs are usually at home alone while everybody is at work while my dog gets to go everywhere with me including work, restaurants, etc. Just wondered your opinion.

Play open mics first to build up experience. If you can play 40-45 songs reasonably well and you have the equipment you're ready.

@stonedcrow5821 5 жыл бұрын
Give over Greg, he doesn't need 40-45 songs to start gigging. Lmao, he's not seeking to be a one-man covers band. I'd say he needs to be able to play 3 songs well and in their entirety to do an open mic for the first time, and those venues almost always have their own PA. All he will need is his guitar and those couple of songs initially. Your first ever set is always a very, very short one :)

I found that we always got more gigs when I told the -bar- dive owner that we'd play for free, were all bad drunks, and we'd pay full price for *A LOT* of drinks. We were actually in high demand. It took me a couple of years to figure out that we totally *SUCKED!!* It wasn't so noticeable when we were always drunk, I guess. Looking back, I think we confused volume and talent. This was also the 70's, back when they still made Rorer 714's (Quaaludes). Which has absolutely nothing to do with this story...maybe.

Playing out is something I feel that every musician should experience. However, as one ages, make no mistake, this is work. And one’s time needs to be compensated for. The problem is, most venues tend to feel the opposite, that YOURE the money maker for THEM! The negotiations to get to an equally satisfying agreement by all parties is an old one and one that hasn’t gotten any easier over time. One guy once said to me, “If you can’t bring in 50 people, stay in the garage!” So, I let a rat loose in his restaurant!! ....kidding. 😉

@@musicletters7214 To be honest, I'm not ZERO sugar. I average 10-20 grams which come from trace sources and veggies. Starting out was the hard part. Now, it's easy peasy. There are no sugar/low sugar substations for just about everything now; 0 sugar pasta, 0 sugar ice cream, almond flour bread, "fathead dough" for making pizza (any type of breading really).

Well, zero sugar is impossible. I need 120g a day. carbohydrates to be able to think. less, and I get too tired and cannot concentrate. 150g is best for me to have strenght and be able to think properly. the carbs do not have to be sugar (glucose etc) but can come from any source. best are full grain products and sweet potatoe for me. I do not like sweeteners although they help.

@@musicletters7214 I guess there are people who eat only meat and eggs that do well on a zero carb/sugar diet. I'm pretty sure everybody goes through low energy at first on low sugar/carb. Stevia is my favorite "sweetener". Everybody just has to figure out what works best for them.
