As a semi-pro artist I can totally get what you mean. I would recommend you to focus only on 1-2 topics to draw for a longer period of time. Like draw only faces. Or only bodies. Don't bother with colors, with shading - only on the structure and gesture. Not even on anatomy. You can even focus on drawing hand or feet only if you like that. After a few months the skills you gathered will flow to other things as well and you won't be feeling so overwheelmed. Then you will gradually add one more fundamental to the mix. I was a victim of trying to learn everything at once and I sucked at everything. Then started doing this and I found a pleasure in drawing again.
@khoahthong44342 ай бұрын
No. Sometimes we need to lower our expectations a bit in order to get the "perfect practice". Of course you want to improve on every aspect, but it's impossible. So choose one first. For example, you can start with boring stuff like geometric shape, contrast shading, copying, basic color theory... or just go ahead with something small but popular such as eyes, hair, flowers etc... Once you are confident with one of these, you move on to another part and build on top of what you learned from these easier ones... Because we are beginners, if we challenge something too difficult and failed, we would be unable to identify why we fail, and thus making this practice unhelpful for our learning. Doing 1 thing will help eliminate this problem.
@nycsim-r8t2 ай бұрын
I agree. That's why focusing on fundamentals is so important. Now, the fundamentals can be overwhelming which is why I would say to draw boxes. It's a meta skill that will always be useful no matter what your level. Draw a Box 250 box challenge is great (and can be tedious) for learning how to draw lines, think in 3D shapes, and learn proportion. In fact, once you finish, do it again and again periodically. It's a great way to learn perspective intuitively as everything can be enclosed in boxes. With practice, you won't need to draw the boxes, but will see them in your mind's eye.

Very good advice! I’m a pro but I’d say I’m mid-career level & obv still growing. Sometimes you get on a project which isn’t exactly your style. One of the best advice an art director ever gave me in that situation was to trace the work of this senior artist in our group who the designs were based on. I’m more of a painter & this project had a very line-dominant style that was unnatural to me. The tracing advice was really key in making me feel the different way this style was done So tracing can be great at any level as long as it serves a purpose ❤

You would be very lucky to get quality feedback on social media, even if you ask you'll just get "wow, looks so good!". Unless you have a bunch of art friends who know the deal, but then why would you need to post publicly anyway? It's much more likely on an art focused Discord, they usually have feedback channels. I'm sure Marc has one, and there are heaps of others out there. When you do, you're more likely to get a quality response to a specific question, like "are the values reading correctly" or "do you see any obvious anatomy mistakes" rather than "any feedback?" I think Marc has a video on how to properly give, ask for and receive feedback if you want to know more.

You know, I've been getting decent at art, but recently found tracing to be kind of relaxing.. I can just look at the shapes and how they made the shapes, then trace them over.. then do another reference, and again just over and over. I can kind of get in this zen moment and learn the muscle memory of tricky shapes like faces, hips, hands, etc. Recently did it with faces, where I picked 3 artists, found art they did with faces in a similar position, then just worked through deconstructing them into basic shapes, and then tracing. It's kind of soothing, and you feel good at the end. Feels like I got better in just a little exercise.

Great video, will try to use this as inspiration. I think I tend to seethe in my frustration when drawing rather than trying to figure out what mistakes I'm making. It's as if I believe that if I can't figure it out, then even looking to other artists won't help me improve, because I am too stupid, impatient, and inconsistent to know how to use advice effectively or something. It sounds absurd when I type it all out, but that's the emotional reaction I'm often caught up in whenever I struggle with making my art (or whatever else I might be attempting to improve my competency in.) into something I'm happy with. When I realize that I'm spiraling as such, instead of making a change, I question why I haven't already and start to burn out and give up. After doing this to myself so many times I've come to wonder if I even enjoy the process in the first place. Am I just too lazy or stubborn to make it enjoyable? Is the process itself just inherently painful for me? Am I manifesting a problem so I have an excuse not to try again? Am I that afraid of failure? No, I don't think that's exactly it. So what is it? Do I not have any vision or aspirations? Or have I not figured out how to identify them? Why do I use filler words so often!?!! I don't know if I have to put in more effort to figure that out and of what sort. What is halting me? Is it my uncertainty about whether I'm wasting my time or not? Or is it more fundamental, fear of change? Of making an effort that might not end up as fulfilling as I want/need it to be? Is the act of me writing all this just another form of my avoidance tactics?! Dragging my feet isn't gonna solve anything, I know this, yet it's still what I spend a lot of time doing. It's easier to be lazy and not do much but lie around all day, but I'll regret it in the long term. I understand it's not a good habit, wasting my time, yet that knowledge doesn't seem to spark action within me, or if it does, it's extremely temporary and only lasts a week or two before disappearing. I really don't know how to fix this: How to make myself make more of an effort for my own benefit. Maybe asking why a little too much is my problem... like I'm desperate for answers.

An alternative to tracing and easier with digital tools is to draw it freehand and then use transform, warp, and liquify to make the drawing similar to your study. You can do it traditionally too by erasing and redrawing (make sure your paper is thick enough and use a kneaded eraser and draw light lines). Now, why can this be better than tracing? Because it's active learning compared with tracing. You have to deliberately use transform, warp, and liquify to modify the image. Over time you won't need much if any of these digital tools as you improve your freehand skills. Drawing is cognitive and your sense of proportion, scale, and shapes will improve fast with this method.

To the tracing point, I want to add what worked for me. Trace something you're trying to learn, then immediately try to draw it without tracing it. If you aren't getting it, repeat both steps. Until you are able to reproduce the thing without tracing it. Along with this, to learn the actual fundamentals, find someone who is doing a freehand drawing and just copy exactly what they do. Not a tutorial with a person talking and broken up into parts, but those videos you see on youtube of people drawing every single step, including the guidelines and basic shapes, without talking.

Good tips. I’ve been a pro for about a decade but I’ve had several projects where the art director outright suggests to practice tracing the character designs for example to get a feel for the style they’re drawn in. I think animators do this too, & it’s exactly the way you said. First trace it, then draw yours alongside it, & try to replicate the same lines. If for example you get on a project that has a lot of lions or animal you haven’t drawn much before, learning their anatomy the tracing way along with learning by reference makes you learn twice as fast

What are you expecting him to teach you? They are different objects with different shapes, you can open a tab and look at endless pictures of them all and try to sum up the ratios in your mind using simple shapes. If you remember how big a fox's head in relationship to its body and legs, and basically a couple of curve shapes that identify the back of their legs, watch a couple of videos and freezeframe. Just think actively about it when analyzing them if you want to be able to draw them constructively. His advice will be 'nothing will replace the time you spend just drawing them and thinking about them'
@Spamkromite2 ай бұрын
For the first step, the reason why tracing is a good start because it builds up muscle memory and starts to prepare the muscles of the arm and hand to get used to those strokes and turns. Then you start to naturally get comfortable with those movements and you start to drawn your own stuff from this muscle memory alone. It really helps a ton and shouldn't be ashamed (unless you go there saying that the traced copy you did is your original, then that's shameful behaviour as it's stealing the art of someone else and claiming it as your own). I wouldn't have learnt how to draw in Disney style if I didn't start tracing it from advertisement leaflets when I was like 8 YO.

Tracing can continue to be useful beyond just early practice; if you think about it inkers are professional tracers, lol. If you want to make very bold graphic style artworks, like comic books, where smooth confident linework is a dominant feature, then you will have to be really good at tracing either your own sketches or those of whoever is doing the layout and rough sketch work.

I don't know how to put it (not being a native speaker does not help me there, either). It is just... I find so many tutorials and they seem either gloss over things I would need to get more in depth about or spend so much time on one thing that I feel like the lesson is standing still. Every once in a while I stumble across something that does "click", but it seems like most comments are more "what the heck? This doesn't work!" I sometimes feel like my brain was screwed on backwards and on other times I am wondering: "why are so many having troubles, this seems to work way better then everything else I tried?" I wonder what the best path for both kinds of artist would be like and how they'd differ.

@@YTartschool Thanks for replying! Yeah I got a brush pen and I'm using it the first time so that's probably why I feel that way lol.

How do you get sculpting humans and aliens really fast is all I want to ask? It’s hard for me to sculpt at high dynameshs let alone finish a project.

Yeah! It is great method for learning ANYTHING. I heard about that from teachers in IT about programming, in writing schools, from another art teachers. It really works! Thank you what you gave a structured description of how to practice this method.

It's actually very hard getting criticised. It's to the point where I don't care if I get roasted, as long as they give me constructive criticism... There is one question, I have been struggling to productive. What is your approach? Asking before checking myself to look for what is wrong with me, I tried everything...

I hear you I’m naturally super lazy, but ambitious and competitive too which is an odd combination. I have to trick myself into getting into situations that I can’t get out of, and where I HAVE to be productive or face dire consequences. Basically if I’m not cornered, I don’t act. When I am cornered, then action mode engages and I get stuff done. Like the worst superpower. KZbin is a big part of that, I started posting 4 regularly years ago and never stopped. When I see the analytics go anywhere but up, I feel terrible so it forces me to produce more\better content to keep the numbers going up. When I have deadlines, I always wait until the last minute to power through it. Not the best way to work obviously, but I gotta feel like something bad will happen soon if I don’t do it. Positive reinforcement doesn’t work that well for me, I need the fight-or-flight response to trigger. One thing that has helped a lot is the pomodoro technique, I’ll work in short 30 min sprints with a timer and no distractions. 30min is a small commitment and the timer helps a bit with the urgency. I have a couple of classes about other ways to improve productivity too :)

@@YTartschoolthis is very similar to how I am when it comes to productivity. Deadlines & forcing myself into corners (for example doing art for others, or telling people about art before it's finished so that I then have pressure to finish it) are some of the most effective ways I've found to be productive. And I definitely feel you with the 'cram in the last couple days before a deadline' thing lol - many of my university projects end up going this way (I'm doing a degree in illustration)

Crappy thing for me is that I Don't have anyone who is a pro at art and can critique my artwork, I'm trying to look for communities that can help me

i hear "trace" method all the time, but i'm drawing traditional like pencil and paper. Any tips on how do you "trace" traditionally?
@ezzwizz52192 ай бұрын
You can put your reference picture to photoshop and lower the picture opacity then print it...

Tracing paper! I used it for years before getting into digital art.

I can't do art studies because my brain tells me they are too boring and when my brain tells me that I have kinda physical pain when I force myself to do it. And problem focusing... My whole pictures are sadly a problem so I need to fix everyting. In addition sadly my brain first sees the details then the whole picture. So focusing on one thing is bad for me because I get sad that one thing is good and the other ghings are not. The problem with the reference observation is that I can imagine it right away but can't replicate it for my life... And my feedback is on discord and it takes days often to get a feedback... Maybe my brain isn't made for drawing...
