It's easy to fall into the trap of finding every little special way you can win... and it's good that you're competitive, but don't let that trap you. If you start to rely on something to be able to win, when that's taken away, you will struggle. In my opinion, it's best to play as raw as possible, that way you rely more on yourself than anything else, and you can adapt to win.
After using 70 or so mice, I actually don't even rely on the mouse as much anymore. I'll usually find a way I can win regardless of what I'm using... see my review of my first gaming mouse to see an example of that: • Review Of My First Gam...
It's all about building your skill to the point you can adapt. So I'd advise not to use scripts or cheats or anything automated... learn the skills, build your abilities, and hopefully you'll understand the "freedom" I'm talking about.

Such good advice for those that get "tunnel visioned" and getting locked into playing ONE WAY, and NOT seeing the potential, and as you say of, "...freedom", to reacting to your surrounding and situations. And with THAT, skills are developed.

Your mentality is spot on honestly. You really do have the mindset of a professional player. As someone who is pretty decent at super smash brothers melee and trains to play competitively you are absolutely 100% correct and I can only imagine that the top players of that game would agree as well.

Don't forget as much as practicing your movement and aim is important, listening and using your sound is vital. Hearing where an enemy is based on weapon noises, footsteps, item pickups, reloading or even doors opening, allows you to pre aim, pre position or in games like quake, pre shoot a rocket to where you know they are heading. Knowing the maps also assists massively with this as well. Top work Zy :)

Someone do a motivational video with this! This is gold! Zy, first I bought 2 mice because of you - both of which fit me 10/10 and I wouldn't have known without watching your videos. Second, you are bringing out the "How To Get Good" videos, and then this here which motivates me even more to go further. Thank you. Thank you so much!

Hey! needed this. Not for Quake but for counterstrike. I constantly change my settings thinking there's something wrong with my crosshair or thinking there is something else wrong after losing a league game. Even though it helps me for a couple of games, it doesn't help me at all in the long run if I really want to improve and play in the proleague!

My little tip, from someone who has been playing competitively since Quake 1: Play even when you would rather not, while maintaining a positive attitude towards failures. It's harnessing the right mindset that is the key to getting enough hours to ramp up towards developing the rewarding feeling of "getting good" and developing advanced skills. Nothing better than being on the same level or beating someone you would yourself consider quite skilled, or even better than yourself. Thoroughly rewarding.

I think this is my favorite video of yours by far. I've lost that drive to get better all the time like I used to be. I love ARENA FPS / but I can't stand trying to get everyone to play something like CTF. I hate that pickup channels are still a thing. lol. I've been spoiled by massively popular games where you don't have to beg to build a team or to play a game. My Quake movement has become shit and I want to improve it/ but it feels like a waste of time due to the insanely small community. maybe I should just suck it up and go balls deep back into Quake series again with CHampions around the corner.

I fucking love your videos And this one was one of the best so far I play CS:GO and I've never used anything to help me get better at it (because you can't) if you use cheats you will NOT get better at the game nor with scripts You have to train your muscle memory for sprays , you have to have good reaction and aim for flicks and avioding flashes and stuff And most importantly a good gamesense this is the most important in my opinion because even if your aim isn't the best but you know where your enemies can be and you are ready for them then you can kill them, help your team and win the game.

I finally started to pull off the rocket jumps from bridge-to-rocket-to-yellow-armor consistently a couple days ago. I definitely went through over 20,000 rockets by myself in Campgrounds. It's probably closer to 80,000 rockets, not including any rockets used when actually playing against/with bots or players. Now I'm hoping I can learn to not suck at Clan Arena. I'm okay in Free-For-All, horrible at Clan Arena, I wish it were the other way around because Clan Arena is my favorite game mode.

Zy! Can you do review from QPAD 8k (optical or laser or both)? I'd love to watch and see what you think. I'm watching gaming mice videos just for knowing what should I buy when I buy, and I'm buying a new gaming mouse like after next xmas lol. I just want to know what's really the best for me, and think it long, because that's who I am. I'm watching everything for like one year before buying if it has something to do with gaming mouse or headset or keyboard, or pc, and you are doing well job with reviews, and if u have reviewed something I think would be great, I'm watching yours video before anyone others video.

I wholeheartedly agree. I have been playing this way since day one and never looked back. :) Funny though, as you say "diversity is key" at 2:12, you do the same side-wall-rocket-jump you did before (which should have been aimed a little lower due to less speed), and miss the bridge. ^^

Nice. It was the same for B-hoping in Counter-Strike. I used to use a keybind and it was easy. But it could never get up to the true speed of real B-hop. So I said fuck it and learned. Now it's great. I can travel much faster and hit hops without a spacebar spam keybind.

Nothing wrong with using tools too help you learn though. I regularly use cheats in CS:GO (not while playing online obviously) to see or reduce spread to train my timing and recoil control for example. Once I got that down, I trained without those aids. Now I can do it in game as second nature. You need to learn, but learning as quickly as possible is the best course of action.
