hi. i like your gx85 footage a lot, from the videos about that camera. but there you used incamera contrast at "-5'. however, ghalex recommends "0" on the natural profile. do/did you use "0" when grading with ghalex, or the "-5" that you usually use? im not sure what contrast to use... ghalex says strongly that it should be "0" and there's not much to lose (also, i saw leeming recommends "0" on cine-d, as well), but on the other hand, your videos shot with gx85 in natural, look gorgeous and they had contrast at "-5".. currently im keeping mine at"-3", as sort of a in-between, but still thinking of dropping to "-5", thinking i might lose shadow information, but then ghalex wont work properly (as it was built to work with "0"). what are your thoughts on this?

Great video, i'm now planning to purchase the Vlog for my GH5, what memory cards do you use to shoot 10bit?

@@SpencerWhiteman Does this mean your shooting at 150mbs instead of the 400 mbs mode?
@SpencerWhiteman5 жыл бұрын
@@ClaycoreProductions Correct, only shooting at 150mbps. I see no need to shoot any higher with my GH5, since this camera is my B cam. I use it for simpler & quicker turnaround projects. Less memory to take up hard drive space, less sd card space taken up and smaller/smaller budget jobs.

Good grade, love ghalex! Try not to raise the highlights so much though, because while the lut didn't burn them, your curve did. :) In cinema, the highlights are always protected and when the camera overexposes, they turn the white to light grey, so the eyes don't automatically get drawn to the burned areas, but to the main subject. In Resolve, you can do that with the highlights slider (the actual slider right underneath the wheel). As for why Resolve doesn't support 10bit in the free version, it's because the free version does not contain any h.264/5 decoder (it's licensing-bound). It uses the OS-provided decoder for that codec. Neither Windows or Mac supports h.264 in 10bit, so the free version doesn't support it either. The Studio version supports 10 bit, and it is much faster decoding h.264/5 than the free version btw (comparing in 8 bit), as it has full GPU decoding support (on Windows, the h.264 decoder doesn't). On the Linux free version of Resolve, h.264 is not supported at all, not even in 8 bit.

Thanks Eugenia! Thanks for the info on the 10bit h.264 files within davinci, I wonder if they'll ever change that? I mean, it's strange that you can edit 10bit prores files within the program, but not able to use h.264 in 10 bit? Seems like a weird thing for them to do on their part, especially if the 10bit h.264 decoder is already programmed (The studio edition). As for the highlights, I just noticed I did push the first clip above the 80 IRE value, so I lost a tiny bit of information, which isn't a bad thing for shots where there is a bright shirt in the image but also dark coffee grounds, but for skins tones, of course. I was just trying to maximize my contrast while retaining as much information as I could in the coffee. I should've set some type of video signal limiter lol :)

Thanks for the video! What or where was the first LUT you applied before GHALEX?
@SpencerWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Of course! First of all, sorry for such the late reply. The first LUT was a PRE-CONVERSION LUT that's included in the GHALEX Pack. It balances out some shifts in premiere, and premiere only has that issue.
@Frankdarnese4 жыл бұрын
That's great. Thanks for sharing this. Do you still have to 'color correct' the footage before applying the GHAlex Pre-conversion and then the Conversion luts?
@SpencerWhiteman4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for such the late reply! Yes, you still will have to balance out the image before the conversion!

Very good explanations and showcase. I’m very curious about your oppinion on whether to use Leeming Lut (which you have also) or Ghalex Lut? and why? :-) cheers!

Haha how do you know I have the Leeming lut? I haven't used the leeming lut in years since my gh4 to help out the Cine D skin tones. I prefer Ghalex since it produces a beautiful stylized/softer look right off the bat.

You results with GHAlex are way better than mine. I usually get overly pink skin tones. Did you do custom white balance before each shot or do you use auto white balance?
@SpencerWhiteman5 жыл бұрын
That's very interesting. I've never had problems with pink flesh tone. Are you using the latest version? Also, how are you exposing v-log for skin? Perfect exposure or over? I just shoot at a dialed in Kelvin Temp, I don't custom WB most of the time.
