acservicetech I was fortunate. I started out as a temp helping out in the parts department of the local food equipment HVAC company. I would ride with the guys sometimes doing installs. Pretty soon I was doing preventative maintenance on ice machines. The company I work for would send me to seminars at parts houses. I slowly accumulated tools. I have no formal education other than my own experience and gathering what information I can from the Internet which was totally free. I was fortunate to come up in this business in the age of free information. I've learned the most from your videos because the way you explain things.so you're very welcome dude carry-on your much appreciated.some of the things I've learned out in the field were wrong. From watching your videos I realized that.

First off, love the channel. I have a lot of respect for people who really know their stuff and are willing to share. One thing I would interested in knowing is tips and tricks for how to do a repair that you have to cut into an existing system. More specifically, ways to cut into lines without leaving trash. Or any suggestions on tools that do a better job than others from the perspective of opening lines up. It's the fear I always have in the back of my mind, "did any of the burrs or other trash get into the line and I missed it". Thanks!!
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
I hear you, ok. If you are cutting a line that is dirty on the outside then sand it first then cut. I only ream the tubing when the tubing is faced downward. If I cannot move the tubing to face downward on an existing system replacement then I will not ream it. Thanks!

Well if you want to make more money then you will have to job hop because most employers don't give raises. I job hopped the first 10 years I worked in HVAC. Never stayed more than 2 years at any place. Learned what I liked and did not like about certain companies. And got more experience with every move. Expect to be lied to by every employer. They will promise the world just to get you in the door, then totally forget all about what they said after your hired. Just saying. Been at this game over 30 years. and worked for over a dozen companies.

I've watched a lot of HVAC videos recently and this is one of the best and most informative. I'm turning 33 this year and I'm hoping it's not too late to get into the field. I have no experience except for the work I've done in my own house. I hope you can help me with the following: You're the only channel I found, so far, that operates in Jersey. I live in North Jersey. What is the word on reputable HVAC schools? Up here, I hear mostly about Lincoln Tech, but have heard mixed reviews. Is there a school that employers tend to favor more? I think that experience in the field is more important but I would like to get off on the right foot. Thanks for all the knowledge.

Honestly I would just go to your local county technical night school and take night courses there for HVACR and start applying at businesses. I would not recommend paying a lot for one of those schools. County school courses are very cheap but usually very good quality for time ratio. Thanks and keep going for it!

Hello, I googled this subject and you came up and you definitely have great content. This field interests me because there is so much work available for this and this is what I took away from your video: #1) EPA Section 608 Cert's, Type 1, 2, 3, 4 #2) Other Certs at local supply houses to see what trainings they have available, such as: Different CSST Manufacturers, Furnace training or Tankless Water Heater training #3) EPA 410a & PM Technician Cert #4) OSHA Training Certification #5) Have some type of community involvement & have your most important thing in life ready to go #6) Getting your own tools #7) Highly recommended to know: Down Cold a Tape Measurer, Knows Down Cold Sheet Metal like cutting sheeting metal, sheet metal out without barbs, putting gas piping together, basic knowledge in air conditioning. #8) During the interview process, best thing to do is not seem too cocky. Have a mix between you know stuff but prove yourself. #9) Employer is looking for someone to move up in the company and really take responsibility. #10) Don't shut the door if someone offers less than you want (money wise) #11) Put some type of long term goal on the resume My question pertains to this, is there any way to study the EPA Section 608 Cert's with no on-the-job experience? I have plenty of time to dedicate to a cause and I feel this is a good way to be a good citizen in my community, to give heat and cool in the harshest environments. My concern is that as someone with no working knowledge of any of the material (other than what I can see from your video's which I WILL watch) such as I, there will be no chance to study this test. Coming from an absolute 0, I feel that getting those cert's will be very very valuable, so I must ask you very kindly, how can someone study for these Certs?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
I highly recommend that you take maybe a night HVACR course at a local technical high school for adults. The prices are great and they may offer the epa 608 as well. We use epatest.com They allow free retests but you still have to use a proctored location to test so that will cost some money. You can definitely get certified with a night course or watching enough videos depending on the person. EPATEST.com offers a cd which has the manual, practice tests and study mode. They also provide a quick study guide as well. Stay hungry and go after it! Thanks for letting me know you found the channel in google!

I am getting my associate's degree in HVACR. currently have this semester and next semester left here in NC. What is your opinion on people coming out of school with a degree looking to be a service tech? how long are we typically just helpers and how much does the degree pay off down the road?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
It really depends on who your boss is. If they have a degree then your degree will be valued. If they do not have a degree it will mean nothing. If you work for a larger company doing maintenance such as a school, factory, hospital or some other large outfit then likely the cfo will have a high degree and your degree will be valued. Either way it is nice to have that done already. It may take a year to move into service and anyway I would highly recommend doing install and replacements first. I would say a quarter to 1/3 of service calls have a problem that originated with something bad on the install so you really need to be out there seeing how things are done in the building structure and dispersing heat vlaues due to heat load and loss calculations. If you get all of this under your belt in the beginning you should be able to make any person comfortable and meet their HVACR needs in the future. Thanks!

Well you can start in service, but most start in installation. Service techs don't have helpers. They work alone. and most like it that way. Try to go commercial if possible. Advancement is much faster and work more steady.

@acservicetechchannel

I actually just switched. You want to work with someone who will issue certs of insurance to your clients fast. My old policy with Selective was very costly and my local insurance agency who I was dealing with was sold many years ago and I had terrible service ever since. I could never get a hold of them for my insurance certs. Selective is good insurance but seems a little high for 2 million liability. I ended up going through a local Allstate Branch after another contractor recommended them to me.

Epatest.com is not directly affiliated with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Despite this, I certainly agree that obtaining certificates on your own time is a great way to show initiative.

The company is Mainstream Engineering and it is one of the companies that are authorized by the EPA to license the techs for the EPA's standards. I believe that they have licensed the most though. ESCOINST.com has also licensed many as well. Technicians in the US need that EPA 608 license to buy and handle refrigerants. Yes the more certs the better, thanks vruizify!

Great video! I have a question..well I'm in my early 30's and I couple years ago I went to a night school and actually got my certification for HVAC technician. The problem is, there really wasn't much hands on experience in that school and forgot most of what was taught. Although I do have my license I feel like I kind of cheated the system. What would you suggest for me to do in trying to get into this field at this point?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 7 жыл бұрын
I would advise a county night school refresher course such as a 30 hr night school adult class, watch all the videos in the playlists on the channel home page- kzbin.info/door/OZR-1IqsAer9wzlvFgb4mAplaylists - and if you know any tech's, ask for free ride along if at all possible. The reality also is just do your homework, get the tools needed and apply for a job. You could go to the local supply house and ask if you can buy a 4' by 8' sheet of 26 gauge sheet metal and just practice cutting metal and putting collars in. Just some ideas. Keep asking questions. The more hungry you are and determined the better and employers see that. I had one young man go right through all my videos and put a comment or ask a question on every video in about a week and a half period. That is the kind of person I would like to scoop up and hire if I were presently an employer looking for the right help! In regards to hands on search through the closest technical high schools for night courses. Usually the instructors are there for the right reasons because they don't get paid much at all to do it. Thanks

UEI college recently added the HVAC program in their school. I know UEI is very hands on, but in your honest opinion would employers consider hiring someone with a degree from that school?
@acservicetechchannel
@acservicetechchannel 6 жыл бұрын
Well honestly, it really depends on the individual who is hiring. It tends to be that if the employer has gone through something like college or technical training then they want to see the individual that they are hiring having something like this. In my perspective, it is about looking at the individual, measuring the basic skills of the individual, and all about initiative, and communication skills, thanks. Overarching licenses such as epa608, r410a, CSST line certs, BPI, and NATE CERTs are the most recognized, thanks!

Honestly, I would try to get into a position where they pay you while you are learning instead of the other way around if possible. I would just knock on doors until one opens. That's what I did. I did not go to school for it and learned as I went. It is pretty cool now with the ability to learn on youtube nowadays which I didn't have back then. Thanks and let me know how you make out!

Yes, Apply at every HVAC service company you can. Go to the company in person if possible. Learn the Service Managers name and go to the company and ask for him by name and tell him your looking to get into HVAC field and looking for work. You will start as a helper doing installs and maybe after 3 years are so work up into service. Try with larger companies. They are always hiring. Mom and Pop , one man companies are poison. They pay low wages have no benefits and work is not steady. Don't worry about having any experience. With persistence you will land a job. HVAC field is always hiring. Don't give up. If you put in a resume follow up on it in a week or two with a phone call. More than likely the Service Manager or who ever is doing the hiring will have a copy of it on their desk and if you call they will invite you in for an interview But you have to get pass the gate keepers first. That is HR. Be very nice to any receptionist or office personal because they often determine who gets hired. Good luck.

I've always been mechanically inclined have some experience in the field and have my g2 licence . tracpipe. Gastite and 636 certifications and yet the expectation of companies is to accept getting paid only 2 dollars more than minimumwage. All while using my own vehicle to go from the shop to the jobsite. In addition to expecting my own tools. I would have been better off staying in the Toyota plant and investing my money i put into schooling for this trade. If you are looking at getting into the trade because you have heard it is a good paying career please heed my advice , i only wish someone had told me

Tony, I am very sorry to hear that! Secondly, thank you for taking the time to comment! I usually do not advise anyone paying for 1-1.5 years of schooling at $20,000-$27,000 but to just try to get their foot in the door at a company and find trainings to do at night such as at local county technical high schools or other less expensive routes. This way the individual can see what it is like and be able to tell if they will enjoy it. They also can see the lives of the other technicians. I don't like any person at all starting their life off in debt or transitioning into debt. That is usually my response when someone asks me what I think about it. I will tell you that I started off with a company and had to leave because the environment was not a good one financially and more so morally. As well, I felt I was working hard and not making too, too many mistakes. The next company I started working for paid more and was great and all the sudden I am working under the installation manager of 35 years asking questions and learning a lot. I was given another good raise after 3 months and then after a year I passed my Nate in Heat Pumps and I received another another raise. I then started doing installs myself for this company and ventured into service. This company sent me away to three trainings out of state that were a week long each along with a multitude of other cert or hourly certificated trainings. This company treated me very well and after a while the owner sold the company and I went out on my own and I subbed work from his other General Contracting Business and started building my own referrals with my business. I developed my communication and business strategies from him either by asking or just watching over the years. He now still comes in to speak to my HVACR students once or twice a year. I say all this because it is a journey and sometimes even though you really want the first company to be the right one, sometimes it is just not a good fit for a multitude of reasons, including financial ones. I learned much about carpentry, plumbing, and electrical in this trade by working side by side with licensed professionals. This has allowed me to buy land and build my house from scratch. It has also allowed me to move into a position to be a Facility Manager for a school for a while before I ended up moving into teaching. I have always kept my business and continued in that. I really think it has to do with the company you work for and the location in the US or Country abroad, that determines what potential of growth exists financially and knowledge wise. This trade has given me the keys to my future and even before I was teaching, I was blessed with several opportunities to move into related fields where my skills were valued financially. I really think it has a big deal to do with location, company owner or trade organization, and if you enjoy what you are doing. Once again, I am sorry for the direction your journey went!

This is because there is a lot of Hispanics and illegal aliens in it. Hell I started at minimum wage putting in installs in 130 degree attics 30 years ago. Had to have a second job just to stay alive. I make the same amount of money now as I did in 2004. Wages just don't go up because of you know who. (Illegals). Employers feel they don't have to give raises. Had my first raise in 8 years. It was 2 percent. Yet this field gets more complicated everyday. The days of changing a thermocouple are over. You have to have a degree in IT for most jobs now days to know how to troubleshoot and fix most units. Well in 8 years I will be retired from it with some not so fun memories of it.

Note: (NO WORK EXPERIENCE) In abroad countries my Indian work experience is not counted as I am not working at any recognised company.

If you are trying to get into an HVACR position as a technician then you shouldn't need additional courses but anything that you can add to your resume would be great. I wouldn't do any courses that are very expensive anyway. Thanks Raminder!

Make sure that you have a well written resume and try to get as much practical hands on experience as possible. In fact keep track of your hands on experience in the shop in case that question comes up in an interview. You may want to look up what local unions are around, see what companies are in them and apply directly to those companies. You can try other local companies as well. Show up in person to drop the resume off, then show up again to check up, make yourself known as that hungry person that is serious, well mannered, decently dressed and determined to make a career of it! Good luck and keep me up to date on your progress at school and as you move on. I have gotten to know some good people that have moved on from where you are at right now and now they are hard at work progressing in our trade, thanks

Try applying for one. That is often the best help. Apply often and frequently. The HVAC field is always hiring. Expect to start at the bottom as a helper doing installations. Schooling has very little to do with the hvac field. Those that work hard, show up on time and don't whine about every job usually advance in this field. I went to a technical school also and started out doing attic installs for minimum wage. It sucks but that's were most guys start. Good money does not come until after about 5 years. For me it was 10 years when I got into commercial work. If your really good in school and put in a lot of work there and take the classes seriously then your instructors will often recommend you to potential employers. They know people in the field and will recommend you as a potential employee. School and in the field is 180 degrees apart. If you get into the field you will never be out of a job. I have never been unemployed in over 30 years in this field. Good luck.

very good video, the guys ask me and I tell them to buy the universal 608 study/test, study for 2 months, read over and over, take the test then about any employer will pull you in, but without 608 your just nothing! keep up the great videos, share the wealth of knowledge to others

but also I warn them that HVAC/R required the most expensive tools, I myself do electrical, plumbing, maintenance, and more... and out of all HVAC cost the most to own the tools! but once you own the tools the pay you receive pays quickly for then.

A common question is if you have a drivers license which an employee thinks is very important. Also a drivers license is a form of identification. Thanks

Honestly I am from the technicians side without an engineering degree. I also now am a teacher at a high school for young students as well as adults at night. I had to prove knowledge and time in the field. In the US if you had an engineering degree you would get a career as an engineer. Most smaller HVACR companies would be afraid to hire you as you may leave after a short time of acquiring experience and knowledge. You may want to target manufacturers or medical, or energy fields in more of an energy auditor, technician. Yeah you need to start somewhere to get your foot in the door, but you may want to head into research for pharmaceutical industries that need hvacr or something like that possibly. I don't know if I was any help.
