My first day on the job as a sheet metal apprentice, I had a claw hammer and vice grips. One of the journeyman came over and gave me a real sheet metal hammer (Donnie). That was 18 years ago and to this day I'll give tools to newbies who are serious about trade. I encourage the guys to buy a tool a week. Thanks for your video!

I went to trade school, so I already had a basic set when I started. But after a few years installing I had it refined down to a stack of toolboxes for each different phase of the job. Sheet metal, plumbing, electrical, drywall & carpentry, masonry etc. Plus a bucket for the bulky stuff like my torch and manifold. The really bulky stuff like safety harnesses, crowbars, power tools, and axes stayed in the truck until needed.

Nice video. I've been a HVAC-R technician for going on 35 years now. You forgot to mention one needs a good pair of shoes and gloves. Since sheet metal is sharp. They are very good P.P.E. (Personal Protective Equipment).

Its seems almost una-fuckin-voidable that the sheet metal is going to cut you regardless. In very sharp painful ways and at the most unexpected times. It's like fate or finals destination I can almost see it before it happens and as hard as I try to stop it. BOOM !!! GET FUCKIN SLICED BOIII

Just started my first week, first day I took my gloves but didn't grab from car, mistake. I grabbed some steel toe boots, pants and shirts that were cheap enough to screw up and sweatshirt because mountain states are cold. Second day I brought my tape measure, marker and gloves in. Lucky enough to work with guys that'll let me use their tools for what I need to. Gonna go get a bag and a couple tools this weekend. If you're in a bigger company theyy provide some tools but if not I'm not sure what will be fine to not bring.

I'm a hvac apprentice, work commercial mostly with sheetmetal, left and right offset snips, impact driver with a good set of bits. Hammer.flat head/Phillips. Stanley fatmax 16' tape. duct knife or just a regular knife to cut flex. Wire cutters. crimpers .seamers .copper cutters and a tieton tool are literally the only tools I need 99% of the time. If you can afford a sawzall and circular saw you won't have to borrow or ask anyone to use tools

Those lemon straights have seen a lot of use like mine, LOL. Crawlspace snailing a small plastic mortar tub works great, so do some models of baby bathtubs. Rounded edges don't bulldoze into the logging road dust and mud, basically a dirt sled. Especially useful when working a crawl space that has rat proofing laid down (if someone doesn't know what that is you will when you run into it). Attach some cheapo nylon rope and it's even more useful.

one thing I would add is a small flashlight or headlamp. as a helper I use it all the time. Whatever you do, leave your phone in your pocket, save it's battery in case your lead tech calls to see what's going on in that attic or basement. who knows, you may get stuck and need that phone to call for help.

Hvac tech needs so much difference tools, and equipment, test equipments. Tanks, torch pulleys hub puller, Etc. Just started with a company that dont supply much. Not even sure if the supply gloves and knee pads. Spend over 2k just so i can go on my own service calls.

Do the tools you need vary depending on if you're working residential or commerical? I'm going to school pretty soon and getting into the commercial industry so I'm just curious..
@cdarrell19856 жыл бұрын
These tools are pretty much standard in all installations. With commercial installs you may want some bigger pipe wrenches. You will likely be working with 1",1 1/2", 2" gas lines. My favorite tool in my bags is my malco power shear. It attaches to a drill to cut sheet metal, furnace jackets for return openings etc. Saves so much time and energy! You will likely install spiral duct at some point doing commercial installs and you will be glad you have it!
@cdarrell19856 жыл бұрын
You will find alot of tools that fit your specific needs as you go along but with these you can get by.

Why you are headless?
@chrismartin13187 жыл бұрын
Why would you use zip ties with ductwork? Steel strapping or, if you're worried about duct making noise, laminated steel strapping and that's only for supporting leads. If it's square trunk lines then it's drive cleat.
@ryanrandolp10517 жыл бұрын
Chris Martin he's talking about hooking flex to take offs not hooking duct work
@chrismartin13187 жыл бұрын
Ryan Randolph why would he be hooking flex to take offs? Take offs always use solid pipe straight through. There is never a reason to use flex.

I have been doing hvac for 7 years over the last 2 flex has become very common 90% of my jobs are all flex runs
@chrismartin13187 жыл бұрын
Ryan Randolph why would you use flex? It looks terrible and leads to less air flow and more collection of dust and debris. I have seen someone with 25 years experience violate gas code and have a brazed copper gas line in a wall. Doesn't make it right.

I am thinking about getting into HVAC. I really enjoy working with my hands, and diagnosing problems. But I am almost 30. Is it worth it? And is it worth going to tech school to learn HVAC? Thanks in advance

I'm 31 soon to be 32...and my passion...i'm going into it too bro...never too late...never late for us because we still youth. 16 to 35 years...still within our youthful age.
@GotTwins297 жыл бұрын
James Valenti it's worth it. I finished a 2 year hvac-r school about a year ago and just started in the field full time. I'm 36 years old. It was worth going to school first in my opinion to learn the theory on everything first and how everything works. Then once you start in the field things tend to make sense faster and you will excel much quicker.
@arkanoiddude6 жыл бұрын
Yeah just make sure you are able to find a place that gives you a decent wage. Most hvac places near me hire rookies at around $10-$12/hr, which is garbage if you're a guy in your 30s with bills and a family. Most rookies in the field are kids fresh outta high school.

Definitely a great start! I've also compiled a shopping list/kit for apprentices at kit.com/PaulBunyan/hvac-and-refrigeration-apprentice-starting-tools-1 To me it seems like it's a useful format/layout and selection for where your first $150 or so should be spent.

No saws all for sheet rock! Can’t tell you how many water extractions I’ve done from some dumb hvac guy accidentally cutting a water pipe. A jab saw is the right tool!

I would disagree with this video. I am a new apprentice (as an hvac tech). I have been doing installs mostly for my company and can do the high side (condenser) confidently and without any supervision. I carry basic electrician tools like pliers, dykes, screw drivers, channel locks... etc. and you will need the basics like a level and a tape measure, hammer etc. YOU NEED GUAGES. You don't need the fancy electronic gauges unless you want to spend that money. You can do a lot with the good ole fashion gauges trust me... Also, an impact drill with a 1/4 and 5/16 bit will be your best friend. Any big expensive tools like a vacuum pump, torches, or recovery machine should be provided by the company.
