Love your videos! I want to suggest the topic for the video :"How to not raise a narcissistic child, especially when one of the parent is". I know it is not easy to discuss, but there is very little information about this, which I am sure many would find helpful. Thank you!

I'm 15 and I obey my mom to the max, she is the one that is in total control. Everyday, I come home from school and the 1 st thing I do, is give her my phone...don't want any distractions, then I do my homework, then all the chores for that day, which must be done to my moms satisfaction. Then I do whatever she tells me to do with no back talk or arguing. On the weekends, I do want she wants me to do, Before I have my " Free Time"!!

I have a fully verbal nearly 3 year old girl. We have tried to stop this, but essentially have allowed her to speak rudely to us and others, look at us with contempt and rudeness and now (more recently) defiance. Neither my husband or I were raised with Positive Parenting, and we just are not sure how to stop this behavior. We get the implementing family rules part, and we have done that. We role model the respect as well. We never raise our voices at her and we are calm and we listen to her. My grandmother one time looked at her in an angry way and spoke angrily to her, and since then, this is how she regularly speaks to us (telling us off or just getting really angry). We try and give her a full sense of positive power wherever possible. She just had little to no respect for us. We cannot come up with a logical consequence for the disrespect, and we don’t know how to enforce treating people with respect at this age. A video on it would be amazing!!!

Thank you for this! What do you think of single mothers by choice? I’m going to be one soon and I’ve been called selfish and ignorant over it and have had such horrible seeds of doubt planted in my mind about possibly messing up my child’s development by intentionally having her only grow up with one parent, any input would be greatly appreciated. Quick edit: I would never regret having my child or anything like that, I waited until I was financially and emotionally stable enough to raise a child off of one income and she will always be loved and cared for beyond belief no mater what life throws at us. My issue is the moral dilemma of knowingly having my daughter without a second parent.

My 8 year old is really out of control, he is disrespectful to the teachers, calls them name, does not listen and do the class work, annoys other kids. He gets sent home every other day. He does not call us names but he gets really difficult talks back non stop. Some times he is calm and listens and some times he is totally A big No for whatever is being said or asked of him. I am A very sad and tired mom and totally lost as to what should I do. He is going through psychological therapy but I don't know what are the triggers and he gets silly and laughs and laughs and jokes about everything and anything non stop for hours. He does not stop when is asked to stop. He does not understand rules and does not follow them. It's a struggle and fight most of the time with him about pretty much everything that has to do with him. He can be very kind and considerate at times. He can do anything for his friends but is quite rough with girls. He has had listening issues since long. He cannot accept a No for an answer and expects to get things done his way.

SJay Bokhari, thank you for watching, it's an honor to be a part of your positive parenting team. There are a few things I can think of. Remember, helping a child is a process and we hope to see progress over time. I encourage you to keep watching, especially videos from the Positive Parenting playlist at kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPCclxt6agg3wrLBRkL7CCwU. Some particular videos that you may find useful are: "Teaching Kids Responsibility - Positive Parenting" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4SpepZogdh7r6M "How To Discipline Your Child With Love" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/m5arZKSvitZ-mNU "Healthy Ways To Discipline Your Child" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/noDMdmyXqdCejLs "How To Help Kids With Listening Skills" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZLOknVqYpKAm6M "How To Talk To Your Child's Teacher About A Problem" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/ppCni3l-ocSYppo A video that would be good for your son to watch is "How To Convince Your Parents To Get You A Dog" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/rF7SaH-VgtyVndk. Don't be distracted by the word dog! You can substitute it for something else that your son has expressed interest in. When you 2 are done watching it, maybe you can make a list of things you control that he likes (treats, screen time, friend time, his favorite meals, parent-son outing, small prizes/toys, etc.), and then make a list of things your son controls. In this list, it would be behavior at school, behavior at home, with people (you can narrow it down to girls), doing homework, doing chores, etc. Then explain to him that he can have access to the things you control if he does the things on his list to your satisfaction. To keep it simple, I would assign one thing on your list to one thing on his list (ie., he can have screen time if he behaves at school that day). Another great video for your son to watch is "How To Do Hard Things For Older Kids And Teens" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/a53XinuuaZuGrrc Some other options for you are a free 25 minute call with one of our Live On Purpose coaches. If you would like to take advantage of that, please go here: DrPaulJenkins.com/breakthroughcall We also have a Parenting Power-Up program available for purchase here: www.parentingpowerup.com/optin-33156182

Nothing seems to work so I end up ignoring it but then I don't want him to feel he's getting away with it. He seems to almost like the attention of a row if I take that route. What do you suggest Dr Paul? It's been 2 years now and it doesn't seem to improve!!!!

Gabrielle Smith, he probably won't stop if he isn't given consequences. The consequences should be given in a calm manner, and explained before. Just an example, give your son 30 minutes of screen time a day. When he cheeks, 5 minutes is taken off the total. I don't know if he even likes electronics or what you are comfortable with, so tailor it to your child. Hope this helps.

Even when kids are trying to get you to listen to the fact that they're mad at me due to me taking a device from them bc they were on it inappropriately and past bed time? What am I listening to?.... Rules are b broken...yet I'm always wrong as the parent. I yell out of frustration...and it's a waste. I'm writing a book. Things i wish i knew before becoming a parent. Adam n Eve didn't listen...its not easy to get anyone to listen. Even when I'm not yelling...no one is listening... there is no respect... I would advise against having kids especially if you're likely to be single.

Erica M and Kiddos, Once the rules are broken and the device is taken away, there is no more talk about it. If they try to talk, ignore or walk away after letting them know the discussion is done. They will say things to try to make you angry and lash out. Just smile at them.

So I have to ask the question: Is what that parent did legal? Could it be considered child neglect? I am only asking because where I live it could be a possible lawsuit. So I guess it is more a question of where does positive parenting end and the child neglect/abuse begin?! Could this be material for a video you do?

nvaranavage, I don't think it could be considered child neglect. Positive parenting is when discipline is motivated by love for the child. I could possibly work this into another video.

Ok, so, with potty training toddlers: how to get them to stop grabbing and smearing poo all over everything? Besides keeping them in back-zipping jammies 24/7? The rewards for them for doing that right now are: 1) it feels gooey and fun 2) curiosity - what is this and why is it so important to drop in the potty instead of the bed/sofa/dining table... 3) Mom and Dad have a big reaction! 4) Big sister says, “Eeeeeww Gross!” Ha Ha HA! This makes “me” a superhero! 5) um. What? 6) because he wants a toddler bed, not a crib 7) because he’s mad mom put him in there so she could get dressed in privacy without worrying about him. Ha ha Ha HA! 8) because he’d rather be free to be getting into trouble everywhere else. It’s just more fun. 9) because big sis and little brother are in the other room!!!! That’s too exciting and he’s jealous. 10) why not? 11) because Mommy has to clean it up and cancel our trip to the park. Ha ha! Look how powerful the 3 y/o is!

Kids do not come in one size fits all. Your daughter is getting older and needs to understand what her whining does to everyone else. You may need to get real with your feelings with her and model what you hear when she talks and what you would like to hear. I will add this topic to the list of future videos, Greensista27.

I can only imagine the legal ramifications if a caregiver did this. They'd be arrested and charged with neglect and/or endangerment. In theory, it sounds funny...to just leave them in the car...but it better not be on the side of the road. It had better be in a well-lit parking lot, and they better have access to sidewalks to walk home and not have to walk along a freeway or busy street without sidewalks to wherever it is your home is. Can you imagine what would happen if a nanny/family assistant did something like this? They'd likely have child neglect charges brought against them and might even end up on the evening news. I agree with modeling listening and respectful behavior. I cannot get behind leaving minors in a parked car and expecting them to walk 2 miles home. I mean what are you going to tell the police if something happens to them while walking home? How are you going to explain that to your spouse? How are you then going to live with yourself? ...and would you ever in your right mind do this with your daughters? What fool would employ this with female teenagers? You'd just be asking for them to be abducted, raped, and left face down in an empty field somewhere. I really appreciate most of your videos, but this one is so colossally ill-advised I can hardly believe you've posted it. It would likely be more impactful to pull over, stop the car, get out your phone and call your cell phone carrier and immediately suspend both teens cell service. (and then you won't end up with a dead, injured, or missing child).

le th, you are not taking into account that everything was well-thought out and I am not advocating everyone do this. The community was safe and the boys were used to walking long distances. Sometimes you need to think outside the box, the mom and kids were happy.
@le_th_
@le_th_ 5 жыл бұрын
@@LiveOnPurposeTV I understand that it turned out well, and that mom and kids were happy. I also understand that sometimes one must think outside the box. However, I do disagree with the assumption that the community was safe. Certainly, there are some communities that are safer than others statistically. However, predatory individuals can be extraordinarily stealth and skilled at remaining undetected, especially those who are cunning, cool-headed, and opportunistic. Most predators are not abducting teenage boys, but a serial killer that's just driving by might. I'm glad that, in this case, it turned out well and was a teaching moment. It's great when things work out that way.

I am a single mother of two. I feel like my patience is, well as if i lost it. My patience threshold doesn’t have enough time in between meltdowns and fights, to replenish. They fight almost all day and definitely every single day. I need help. We’ve done therapy twice (not two sessions, for a period of time twice), i took a parenting class to see if i could get extra pointers, I’m not sure what else to do. Please help me. I feel like they need someone else to lol o them firmly. I don’t understand why they respect their teachers more than me. They don’t respect each other nor anyone else in the house (adults).

Thank you for the video, Dr Paul. I have a question, we are a blended family, with 4 kids from 8 to 16, and whilst this theory would work for our oldest two, at stage 2/3, how could we incorporate this for the youngest in stage 1/2. As tempting as it would be at times, I just can’t drive off and leave him 😂. So how would the stage 2 version go? Much love from the UK

Can you please tell me how to get much younger relatives to listen when there is way more than only one person like yourself in the mix with a lot more resources to offer calling themselves an authority in that much younger relative of your's life without doing something dramatic to make things a little more inconvenient for them all? What a coincidence. Almost the same thing happened to me once. When a big teenage boy riding in the back of our car while I was in the front passenger seat nest to my husband driving started running me down and swearing at me I asked him first if he had any money in his pocket. When he said, "Yes, why?" Then when I asked if he had $1.30 or more and he said yes -- Then I told him to get out of the car and take the bus home in the winter while we were driving around in the city. LAter when having time to think as my husbnad's cousin he was so polite to me I was delighted.

Frances Bernard, thank you for watching Live On Purpose TV. It is best if all authority figures are on the same page when it comes to disciplining children. If different adults are allowing various behaviors, then it is confusing to the child and they are unsure how to behave. If possible, have a meeting with all adults involved in the disciplining of the children you have authority over. Discuss which behaviors are acceptable and which are not, then come up with consequences for those behaviors. We have a lot of videos on parenting, and even have a playlist for that particular subject. If they are willing, check it out: kzbin.info/aero/PLq2mRDkHEBPCclxt6agg3wrLBRkL7CCwU. These 2 videos are the ones I recommend first: "Teaching Kids Responsibility - Positive Parenting" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z4SpepZogdh7r6M "Consequences For Misbehavior | 6 Specific Examples" - kzbin.info/www/bejne/fJPGqKNvo8Zjars If no other adult wants to have this meeting, then just do the best you can. That may not seem helpful, but the only person you control is yourself.

I work at a child care center. Some of the children struggle with bad language. It's especially hard when some of them have parents using the same bad language, and do not care if their children do. I calmly tell them that language is inappropriate at school, and tell them better and appropriate ways to express how they are feeling. Is there anything else I can do?
@LiveOnPurposeTV
@LiveOnPurposeTV 4 жыл бұрын
Angelique Burke, thank you for watching and for the work that you do with children. It sounds like you are already handling this situation very well. If you feel comfortable conversing with the parents (or perhaps writing a letter to the parents), it might be beneficial to ask them to talk to their children about not use such language in the school setting. Don't expect too much out of it, but it's a start. My only other suggestion is to have a consequence for inappropriate language and a reward for better language. A consequence might be not allowing them to play with a desired toy or not participating in a non-essential - yet fun - activity; a reward would be a sticker or time with an special toy. Of course, you would need to make sure these things are cleared by the care center management.

Those kids just take consistency. I have one. He will push you as far as you are willing to go, so you really do need to know what your limit is and he will often act as though the walk home in this scenario, didn't bother him, but if I do that every time, he will come up with his own reason to do things differently. Also, knowing the law well so that your child can't try to use it against you is important. That was a game changer for me. He used to make me worried that I would get charged with child endangerment or neglect for trying to teach him respect.
