I've been working with a small one, and you were so right Jesse. I've made a connection with the CEO and he loves my stuff, knows what I'm good at. He's actually sent out briefs and said we've only sent this to certain people who can nail this. I know my stuff is going straight to the client, it's great.

Even with boutique publishers that actively pitch your music to their clients, it's worth noting to not deliver more than 2-3 albums to that publisher and see how they do over a year or so. I've worked with such a publisher and gave them 25 tracks, and they have only managed to place them in two shows, made a big deal about it, and then the actual return in sync fees and royalties was like 100 USD. Nothing apart from that, so low return.

totally agree Jesse. i only really considered myself properly inside this business when i started partnering with those publishers that would have that personal relationship and a small roster of composers and would send me briefs in my wheelhouse. a strategy of uploading tracks to stock libraries with over a million tracks is definitely not going to lead to full time income in the sync music licensing business.

yeh songtradr is like that. I totally agree. I think pond5 has near half a billion tracks. I think these companies or their search algorithm pitches anything that starts to sell. If you accidentally upload a duplicate with a different title it knows you have posted a duplicate. There are AI companies that do a lot of the backend sorting and analyzing of tracks on the fly by genre mood energy level etc.... (I have a free trial account with one of them) and there are machines spitting out anything (ie youtube topic vids) with audio in it to capture a fraction of a penny of ad revenue. Its a tad depressing

Is it foul play for a person who works for the company to have their own music in their library, and then constantly be pitching it to people? 👀

IMHO, it's only foul play if they pitch their own music regularly over the rest of their catalog. At the end of the day, what the customer wants determines which tracks get used. If an owner pitches their music, but not your music of the same genre, then there is a conflict of interest, and a sign that you might want to have your music elsewhere.

@@SyncMyMusic I guess I’m just starting to get curious if this is actually happening or if companies have rules set in place that if you work there you can’t publish to their library; kind of like if you want at a casino they won’t let you play there.

@@Bittamin I would think that any library that gets caught ignoring other composer tracks due to preference of their own during pitches would end up not having many good composers working with them.
