Must be easy on the nerves. I hope Stihl comes out with an electric Kombi head that's practical soon. I predict most electric string trimmers will have pivoting heads soon. So you can adjust to the exact angle you need for your height. No reason not to since the motor is in the head. Have you noticed every pro demonstrating string trimmers on YT is bending over? I'm really curious if the trimmers Stihl sells in Germany have the same issue. They use average heights to develop products. American trimmers are no longer made for Americans. Once people figure out they are going to be very angry.

I had a model older than this one that I love. My sister has difficulty with tools that are too heavy and she actually loved mine and found it easy to use kzbin.infoUgkx_rBCFuDW1zD6blTGhLkvAkxU657uR_lG . This is a newer model but was even lighter which she really appreciates. She enjoys it and I no longer have to go to her house to trim as she can handle it fine. Haven't used it enough to comment on the battery life but lithium batteries last longer than the old style. Being cordless makes it easy to trim the far edges of the property. The entire yard can be trimmed with one charged battery.

I prefer to walk backwards because it allows me to see the full length of the cleaned line and allows for a better finish in one pass. I can go forward if its a touch up and the line is clearly visible but if its heavily overgrown backwards is a must IMO.

I know this is from 2019 but I'd like to say that walking backwards while cutting a vertical line has everything to do with which direction the head spins. Most trimmers spin to the left, thus allowing for a smooth, even approach to the grass.

wanted to say your comfortable walking backwards because of the direction of head spin...if you go the other way your cutting on the up spin and launching mad amounts of little rocks...when you flip edge your hitting the soil and spitting out rocks at high speed capable of smashing glass and hurting people...make sure noones around ..youll eventually hurt someone or damage something..also try to use your mower to cut the grass near the edges...if you have to trim it make sure your not cutting the blades of grass lower than the mower did...when you do along walks and driveways i make a little trench about half inch wide to allow any rainwater to flow ...you dont want rainwater on your lawn...it carries acidic water and weed seeds...i always wear shorts so i know how many rocks im spitting out...better you than a kid or window...that head sheild is there to cut the string...its a very false sense of safety...first thing i do is hacksaw it off...i always keep head speed low enought to do the job and if i feed to much line i hand turn it back..you should have about 6 to 8 inches of line out so your speeds are lower...always remember flip edging is extremely dangerous i shit you not...been doing it for 38 years

Walking backwards is the best way to see the results of edging as I go & is much more comfortable because the trimmer rests against my body. When walking forwards, I hold the trimmer away from my body which can result in an achy back. The only area that I edge while walking backwards is my long concrete drive and sidewalk. To each his own.

Thanks for the video; it was instructive. I like this video because you aree using an electric trimmer rather than gas. I have post polio syndrome and lifting is a real problem and while I considered an electric trimmer I never got to it. What you did not point out was the nice "ditch" between the mulch and grass. You can cut that ditch with a sharp shovel and then pull tthe mulch back with a rake. Schneebor makes a great rake for the mulch. It is like most iron garden rakes but has fewer teeth so the space between the teeth is larger.
@SilverCymbal5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the nice comment. In addition to the weight savings it gives me better control too since I am juggling so much weight on top. Try one out and see if it works for you and it may be much more comfortable for you . Thanks again, and I will have to check out that rake too.

One additional comment to be aware of. Pay attention to which direction debris is being thrown from your trimmer. That will help determine which direction you need to walk when you’re edging. Always keep people and pets and vehicles and anything else you don’t want to have damaged out of the direction of the throw of the trimmer!

Good tips! Another factor is the type of trimmer line. Some string is better for edging than others; the shape, thickness, and material are important considerations. I think you want something that quickly returns to a straight form after encountering resistance - wobble or turbulence is undesirable.

Nice tips, that flower bed looks fantastic! Since I started to learn how to use a straight shaft trimmer, the head turns the opposite direction from my old curved shaft so that was a learning curve. I found that I like to walk forward, left-to-right. It cuts using the right side if the head around the 2-3 o'clock position, throwing the grass clippings away from me. But it really depends on where I am in my yard and what I'm doing. Like you said there is no right or wrong way!

Depends on which direction your trimmer is spinning. If your trimmer is spinning counter clockwise, you move right to left and vice versa.
@RyeSatterley Жыл бұрын
Walking backwards while trimming is a good way to not get distracted by seeing the whole long line that you have to edge. Walking backwards enables you to work with about three feet within your vision at a time. It's not as dangerous as wide-open weed whacking while walking backwards because when you're enjoying your going slow. My buddy always bust my beans and asked me why I am going going backwards Isaiah been doing it so long I can do it upside down.
