Try something more computational and programming involved. These types of projects can usually be done with no equipment (as long as you have access to a computer) and no cost. In general, learning how to program is useful in other areas beyond science research.

i am Maitreyee from West Bengal. So right now I am an ordinary high school student, and i have a target of joining high tier colleges and universities for my under-graduation. so i had a couple of questions about the process: 1. i don't have any experience about research and science fairs, and i am really interested in biology field, especially neuroscience and molecular biology, so how am i going to start these? 2. i am a very ordinary student, and i am really interested in athletics and cultural clubs, so is these going to help in the process of selection in top tier colleges and universities? 3. i am right now in the 10th grade, and next year i have my boards exams, so is it too late?

A mentor is someone who is knowledgeable in the field you are working in. This can help you learn more, faster - and potentially help you publish your research.

Thank you for your content Rishab😁. I have a question about cold emailing. I suppose before cold-emailing a professor I would need to gain a decent amount of knowledge on their research otherwise they probably won't see me as good enough. The thing is, I would e-mail many professors since not many of them are going to accept me. Won't it be a bit overwhelming if I read all of their research? Are there any ways to gain knowledge on their research more efficiently? Also, are there any efficient ways to find out which professor is working on a problem that I might be interested in?

Unfortunately without prior research experience you will have to be less selective. This makes sense because without prior research experience you will likely also have less developed research interests and will be more open to doing or assisting any project that a professor might suggest. I would recommend cold emailing a variety of professors as you might get exposed to a research field that you didn't even know of. You can Target some emails to specific professors based on the papers that you read. This way you don't have to personalize every single email and you don't need to read the papers of every professor that you email. Instead you will have a mix. However I would guess that the professors for whom you personalize your email to you will have a higher response rate. Good luck!

I've got a 3.94 unweighed gpa and my class rank is barely in the top 10 percent. I'm doing good in everything else, including course load/weighed gpa. How badly will this impact my chance at a T5 college?

not really. Class rank doesn't really matter. GPA does but you seem to be doing pretty good so I wouldn't be worried. If you have anymore concerns theres a college forum site ik ab that answers this kinda stuff pretty well. @@hastorius

It is not led by professors. They have professors give lectures - and then they pay post docs etc. to help mentor students just 1 hour/week. Totally not worth it. You will find a much better experience in doing these two things separately: - Using Open Courseware or something similar to watch lectures in the area you’re interested in - Contacting a local professor to do research with them
