You have to throw away all food that may be contaminated. Wash your kitchen cabinets at least three times. I used the white vinegar mix first, and then soap that's 10 times stronger than bleach. Don't put your food back into the cabinets instead, place traps inside over night. I successfully got rid of them this way. I also disinfected the whole kitchen which includes the ceiling, doors and so on. :) The whole process took three days but it's totally worth it as the thought of larvae in food is terrifying.

I never even knew about pantry moths.....until we were infested! I was so grossed out, I threw out everything that wasn't canned. I did exactly the same things you did. The only difference is, when I come home from the grocery store, flour, sugar, rice, beans are put in the freezer for a few hours. I'm not taking any chances. I NEVER want to go through that again. According to my science teacher father, the eggs are in the product. And if the product sits too long on the Shelf the eggs will start to produce especially during the summer months. And you'll never know until you start seeing something flying around the room and you don't know where it came from. Check your spice envelopes too if you haven't used them in 3 years or so. Happen to me. There are eggs from insects inside flour and the same is true of any pre-packaged mixed with flour or corn flour and can sometimes happen with rice that was stored way too long
@susanmarshall817

Maybe I didn't say this to you but my father was a science teacher and told us at the age of 9 or so that those beetles that come out of the flour bag were in there as eggs when you bought it... and any flower powdered mix if you keep it too long and this includes spice mixes. I found bugs in a spice mix I hadn't opened for years in a bag . I generally also refrigerate my flour in a plastic bag

I have never had this problem until last fall when I bought a large bag of black sunflower seed for the birds. I had the bag sitting in my mud room and I noticed the little white worms when I opened it up. Then I started noticing the worms crawling up the walls and cocooning in the corners of the ceiling. The Moths that did hatch were everwhere. Everytime I opened a door to a closet one or two would fly out. I had put the sunflower seeds out on my deck for about a week in the middle of winter thinking that they wouldn't survive the cold, but they did and started to emerge from the bag when i returned it to the mud room. I have always pruchased a large bag of black sunflower seed to feed the birds in the winter and this last bag was the first time I have ever had this problem. From now on the seed is staying out on the deck all winter long. Thanks for the video. I had no idea that they might be in my food. Checking and cleaning everything now.

I bought the traps and they do catch them but I still had them flying around. I threw out all the food in bags and cereals. I washed the shelves and yet I still have them. I am going to get the peppermint oil and then will do a thorough cleaning AGAIN ! this is such a pain. I now put foods in the freezer when I bring them home from the store as one person said they could be in from the factory. So I am doing what I can to finally get rid of these pests. I store my sunflower seeds outdoors all time now.

I really admire you, I have been dealing with this nightmare for almost 9 months, they came in a bag of flour and they took over everything, I called the pest control company and they came to fog my whole kitchen, I had to do everything you did in your video before they smoked. The problem is that they disappear and then 3 weeks later they start to come back, yesterday was the third time they came to smoke the whole house now, because apparently the moths are hatching in cracks and corners of dark spaces, including a whole in my ceiling where I removed a smoke detector. So these little devils literally can eat dust and crumbs that are hidden in other parts of your house. When we broom we spread the crumbs of food and that can keep them alive enough for another cycle. I do have traps, and they work, and I put all my bread and crackers inside the fridge. I don't buy grains anymore, and when I do I eat them right away. I really hope this last treatment will work and I don't have to see ever again one of those things.

You certainly did a thorough job. I had these moths come in in a bag of wild bird seed several years ago, and have been dealing with them ever since. I bough a couple of those zapper things that look like a ping pong racket, and they work really well. You just swing it at them, and pretty easy to hit as it is quite a large surface. I have also used the pantry moth traps. But every now and then more will hatch and come out. Not nearly as many as I used to have, but now keep most foods like that in glass jars or air tight plastic. They are awful to get rid of. You did a great job. Bought a bag of rice home that I didn't have time to store yet, and a week later, I saw a couple of the moths in it. They were probably in it when I bought it, and then hatched. So I threw it into the freezer for a week or so, and will let it warm back up to room temp before putting it in glass. I also use oxygen absorbers, as jarring up rice or something that already has eggs won't help. They will hatch in the jar. But using oxy absorbers, insects can't live without oxygen.

This video is really useful. I had already cleaned my pantry once. I had an infestation of cloth moths at the same time which made it really confusing. I was surprised to find the pantry nests in my spice bottles. I keep my most used bottles next to the stove; the lesser used bottles stay in the pantry. The moths loved the little plastic spice bottles with red tops that Vons sells - almost every bottle had larvae in the threads of the bottom, and some of the tops. They hated most the glass bottles with metal tops - not one of my spices with glass bottles and metal tops was affected. Guess what I will be purchasing from now on? Yes they are more expensive. But just the freedom from the creep factor is worth it for me.

@@jennak.8541 , thankfully after I cleaned everything, and got rid of most of my moth-friendly food they never returned. It was a lot of work, because there were “nests” in almost every room; they do the cocoon thing up high, mostly where two walls meet, and everywhere that isn’t exposed to a lot of natural light . I vacuumed the entire house; top to bottom to suck every last one moth in every stage of life, I cleared and cleaned the pantry + every item I eventually put back in it with a bleach + Dawn mix, and froze what I didn’t throw out that could be a problem (a few items that seemed to not be compromised). And that was it. That experience made me super-sensitive to moth smell though, not cool, but hopefully helpful for future encounters.

After throwing so much out, anything we wanted to keep went into some waterproof bins I got at Target. This was essentially a detention for our food. Everything went into these bins. Some individual items went into bags or smaller containers. That way we didn’t have to throw away a whole pantry, just a bin if something had eggs left on it. I even got some diatomaceous earth coasters and put a couple in each bin. This dries out the larvae when they hatch. Then I added some cedar shavings in mesh bags and cedar oil. It works similar to the peppermint. We really found out which bins where actually air tight. Sadly I think we’re in for another round. As the temp is getting warmer I’m seeing moths again. I think what I did in the kitchen worked, but wasn’t fast enough. I’m sure they are hatching in other rooms. The best airtight bins we got have been the ikea 365. Of the kids leave something out of the bins, I throw it out. They’ve learned that it’s a quick way to loose a favorite snack. Thanks for the video. Great to know I’m not alone. It’s a big deal having to throw out an entire pantry.

I, too, have had pantry moths, and I still get the odd one in the pheromone trap about 6 weeks after I did my discarding and cleaning. I read on one site that it may take up to a full year before they're all gone. But I have to correct you on one thing - what you did with the canned goods. A friend once had a severe infestation, and she also found the larva under the labels on the cans. Knowing that, I ended up taking off all the labels, cleaning the cans, and then using a marker to relabel them.

My mom bought me discount bird nuts she got at a local hardware store. I kept the bag in the kitchen as it was winter and I would throw a handful out back. I did notice in the bag a weird cotton candy type webbing within the bag but thought nothing of it. I assumed it was floor sweepings from the factory?? Yup I was wrong. It was these awful moths. Started noticing moths flying everywhere. I immediately got rid of the nuts but didn’t realize they would go to this extent. Started noticing weird maggot larvae appearing in random spots; silverware drawer, crawling on kitchen walls. Little cocoons on the ceiling omg!! I noticed random moths flying out of cupboard, no matter how much I cleaned out, they would still be there. The grossest was when I picked up a squeeze bottle of honey that leaked onto the cupboard shelf and the head of a larvae stuck underneath in the honey started wriggling. Nightmare enduring!!! I’m gonna try the traps. The larvae stage is nauseating. 🤢

I'm sorry you've been dealing with this for so long! That's the bad thing about these pests. Once they get out of the pantry/kitchen, they're a lot harder to get rid of. I got lucky that I was able to get rid of them before they spread out of the pantry. Good luck and I hope you're able to finally be rid of them this year!

I tried to spray them pure white vinegar and it did not phase them at All. But someone recomended Peppermint Oil as full proof. Someone else said Lavender or Cinnamon sticks works too. Last night I found a bag of oatmeal that was invaded with tiny moths!! For some reason it was put where I only keep my extra grocery bags. Most of my dry food is kept in glass jars with screw tops, so that was all safe, but when I bought 75 pounds of different types grains, some of it was put into tupperwear containers that didnt have a screw tops, so unfortuately I found a little bit of evidence of contamination in each of them. 😢 I cleaned everything out, but they are still flying around mainly up on kitchen the ceiling, but not in the panty. Since there's nothing else they can eat now, I don't know how long it take for them to starve to death.

Fyi...I used to get those little brown flour bugs that loved oatmeal, for starters. I learned that those bugs come from the food processor plants and the larvae are packaged right up with the product. I read that anything that has a possibility of having those larvae, should be put in the freezer for 3 days immediately upon arriving at home, and the freezer will kill the bugs and the larvae. I had no idea that's how they were getting in my house. So I started the freezer process and i have not seen a single brown bug. It's been a few years. BUT. I do have the moths and i thought they were gone, until i came downstairs to grab my charger, only to be irritated by a moth that hit my eye. I turned on the light, there they are again! I'm ready to cry, i worked for 5 days this past week. And the worst part now is feeling them on my legs and in my hair. (they're not really, but they creep me out that bad) Thank you so very much for your time and going thru the video so thoroughly. It's been a year for you since you posted that video, have the moths in your pantry returned at all? I just need to know what I'm facing. And so many of us have never dealt with these or even heard of them. They're obviously infested at the food processing plants. Is this their way of getting us to eat the bugs they said we were going to be consuming? Seems like it to me. J/s

I have a bird and they love bird seed, I've tried freezing the bird seed but if you have any moths in the house, they will make their way into the sealed container. When I moved into our current home 20 years ago, we always had those pantry moths flying around the house not a lot but always killing 1 or 2 every day upstairs and in the basement and always thought they were in our clothing and really didn't know what type of moth they were, this went on for a few years never able to figure out where these moths came from we never found them around our food but usually in the basement the most, one day I was in the crawl space under our house that we used for storage and it has a gravel floor and noticed quite a few moths flying around as I examined the gravel it appeared to have a lot of light brown powdery dirt with a spider like webbing with small empty larva shells suspended in it, Then it hit me where the moths were coming from because the previous home owners had several cats and they must have gone into the crawlspace for who knows how long thru a gap between the furnace and wall and using that area like a litter box the moths were laying their eggs in the cat feces down there, eventually as the feces dried out over time and the moths had no food source for the larva to feed on and the moth problem went away

Insects are attracted to light so, don't ignore. Also. you mentioned peppermint oil in the cleaning solution...one of your viewer's mention putting clove inside open containers and canisters. In addition, I have heard many, many times to use bay leaf inside open items and all containers. Might I also suggest you produce a video for potential infested items entering your home? e.g. I was told to freeze items for at least a week, not 2 days. There is a ton to learn and I am still in discovery mode.

Where did you move your food to while you cleaned? Did the moths follow the food or were they gone for good? I've been dealing with moths the past 3 yrs. I ddnt know what they were at first. When I say infested I was losing my mind. Larva crawling all over my kitchen ceiling. In my cabinets. Realized they were in my cake mix boxes. Threw everything except canned good out. Then I saw they were in my cereals and rice boxes in different cabinets. I inspected everything threw out what was suspicious. I even found one under a closed Encased champagne bottle. Like how did the larva get under that paper. I was shocked! One year I was killing about 50 to 60 moths by afternoon in my kitchen! My landlord told me it was my clothes I told him the moths are in my kitchen. He did nothing! Over time, I did find them hiding in clothes that I stored in the closet. I threw them out. But they're constantly in my kitchen. I've tried moth cakes and balls as well as cloves. I've tried dehumidifiers just in case their attracted to moisture. I'm going to try these traps and your cleaning methods. Thnx for this video.

I am going to be washing everything down with Thieves house cleaner. I also have an indoor bug light that catches a lot of them. I am going to try the vacuum cleaner and the moth traps. Putting peppermint in a diffuser makes it uncomfortable for them too. I've been able to get rid of weevils easier than these things. The first place I noticed them was in a cereal container. I didn't even wash it, just threw it out. I didn't realize what they were and thought they were just moths. I hate these things!

hahahaha the way you said bunch of them chilling on the ceiling so funny. You have a very clear and crisp sweet sounding voice, you should do asmr, or scary stories narration videos on youtube. You will do very well.

Are the eggs already in the rice, beans, meal, flour, etc.? Meaning they will certainly hatch after a certain period of time, no matter what container the food is in? Is freezing or storing in the fridge the only way to stop the eggs from hatching? For example, they won't hatch if under a certain temperature? I'm dealing with this problem right now and trying to figure out how I need to start storing rice, flour, mixes, etc. differently. Any help anyone can provide is appreciated

I wonder why all videos are saying vacuum. Wont they live and fly on there and possibly get out or lay eggs in the vacuum?
