Great video...You really covered the bases on this one. FWIW...I am steadfastly on team snail! I got into snails when I started keeping live plants. Overnight...POOF! They do a fantastic job keeping a tank clean and I have them in all 40 tanks now with the exception of the large SA cichlid tanks. Those tanks are where extra snails go to meet their maker. To collect extra snails I put a small dish with food in it into the aquarium at lights out. I pull the dish in the morning and feed the snails to the SA's. Thanks for the great video!

That's a good idea but when you're pet shop is like 30 miles away then you have to get a better solution to get rid of them, I put 3-6 pieces of (green beans) through out the tank (75 gal) & let them be drawn to the beans & take them out & they LOVE GREEN BEANS.

Assassin snails. What wonderful little gastropods. I bought four to help with a snail infestation in a 75 gallon tank. A few months later they were the only snails to be found, but I had lots and lots of baby assassin snails. Fortunately, they found their eco balance and they really are rather pretty. Get you some!

I have 3 nano planted tanks & I have had snails in all of them, somehow. I have a Betta in one of the tanks & I think he's actually eating the snail larvae, too. I can't see them, of course, but I think he does. It looks like he's hunting or something, looking intensely & then he goes for it. On another note, I really don't mind snails. I hate killing anything. So, I've just been picking them from my 2 smaller tanks & putting them into my 5 gallon tank. I thought they were making holes in my plant's leaves, then I found out it's just because they are lacking potassium & thanks to Jason, now I know that the snails don't harm the plants. I just might let them be now, for now.

Excellent video! The pest snails that have invaded my tank are bladder snails... I actually think they are kind of pretty! I just really wish they wouldn't reproduce so much! The problem is that I am an accidental mystery snail rancher. I have become the biggest mystery snail dork in the last year. I love em! They are so freaking entertaining! In order to reduce the quantity of bladder snails, I would have to also endanger my mystery snails. So, for now, I will just let them be and every so often I will clean the eggs off of my plants (paper towels or cotton swabs are actually pretty good at this!).

I live in Australia, and I have a native fish tank which I just chocked full of Cardina longrostris shrimp. The rainbowfish pretty much ignore them, they are super cool and fun to watch, and they just decimate any algae, detritus and anything else - therefore kinda controlling the snails. I still have snails though, idc, they're alright, sometimes the rainbowfish eat the small ones.

I tried cutting down the bio-load by feeding less algae wafers and I think I may have starved a couple of my corydoras. There were too many ramshorns hogging the wafers I did toss in and the corydoras could not get to them, I guess. So I tossed about 30 of the snails into the fish pond out back and went back to my initial ration of wafers. The remaining cories seem happy. Lesson learned.

Luckily I have them in a different tank specifically for snails so any other snails that pops from other tanks, I rehome them there. Constant, free supply of fresh fish food for my fancy goldies. Some people worry that fish will choke on the snails, if it fits in a goldfishes mouth they’ll eat it and mush them up with their crushing block (teeth) at the back of their mouths. Snails are also good source of vitamins too for fishes.

I don't know what kind they were and this new planted tank is under 15 gallons so it's not like there hundreds in there although I did remove between 40 and 50. And my brand new "turkey baster" sucks them right off the glass!!! So as long as they're very small, manually removing them via the turkey baster method wasn't that bad and didn't take that long. It's not that I don't like the snails in my tank, it's that there was a big population boom and now there has to be atleast 100 or more in our 20 gallon tank. I understand that they are there for a reason, but I think it's a bioload problem at this point and leaving them might cause more problems with the balancing of the tank

Nice video of information but how about disinfecting/sanitizing plants prior to going into your aquarium! I use 19 parts water with prime to one part bleach and swoosh your plants around for about a minute depending on your plant. Rinse well afterwards prior to adding plants into your tank. (Get rid of bleach odor) With this method I've never had a population of those nasty pond snails.

Very useful video! I think I have the trumpet snails (light-almond colored with darker spots), but I also have little shiny black ones shaped like a lady bug that start out no bigger than a speck - those ones really seem to multiply fast. They are fabulous little cleaners though. My problem is I don't like killing anything. Watched your video on the snail trap which looked great but what to do with them? My fish are annoyed that I can't squish them, but isn't that like murdering your housekeeper (not that I have one)?

I have a lot of fish that love to eat snails so when I use the trap I just drop the snails in the tanks with fish that eat them.

Also Goldfish! Our 14 cent feeder fish goldfish grew to about 4 inches. We put him in our 10 gallon guppy tank and it cleared the tank in a day. Over a hundred snails exterminated by one fish. I couldn't believe it. Afterward he was a bit sluggish but was back to begging for food the next day.

I don't think I'd mind if they quickly snapped them up, but I read on a forum that pea puffers will take chunks out of bigger snails, and one user said they leave them alone after biting their antenna off. That doesn't sound like the display tank I'm going for.

Hey Jason how can you tell if a snail is dead I know they like to hibernate as some say and won't move awhile but I've heard they can release a good amount of ammonia in a tank

The truth is it’s not something I typically worry about in my fish room because I have so many scavengers in my tanks. Other snails, plecos, fish that pick on dead things, etc. I can’t recall ever having an issue with dead snails and usually don’t know they’ve died until I just see the shell. In a small tank without scavengers I suppose it could be a problem, it’s just not something I make a point to observe.

Hi Jason, I have a 55 gal, 8 zebra snails and about 50 tiny baby maybe more snails that came in on my plants. My question is if I get 2 dwarf puffers will they eat my zebra or just eat the tiny snails?( zebra size range from nickel to a quarter size)

Rosy Barbs love eating snails... Changing my fake to planted tank. And OMG the amount of trumpet snails I have pulled out. My issue with them is that the shells get broken down and I can't seem to vacuum them out. They just float in the water and never go up the tube. Im to the point now, I'm using tweezers and pulling them up as they come up through the new black sand.... I tend to over feed, so cutting back on that now...

I found the best way! Im a beginner and at first i liked the one snail in my tank but eventually it got really bad. I tried everything but nothing worked. Now i have the snails under control and it was rather easy. I plant damaged plants with big weak leaves. Snails love them and feed from them and just after a day or two just remove the plant again. The snail will hold on the the plant and you can trap dozens of them all at once. It's a natural trap basically. I don't know the name of the plant i used. Another thing was when one of my platies was pregnant (first timer for me and i tried to save the babies). I got one baby and i put it in a small hatchery. I noticed the snails eventually start gathering in there as there is little waterflow and lots of food in there. I replace the baby and then remove the snail. It works way better than the baited traps designed for snails. My hatchery consists of 2 parts and i added soms pieces of plants in there for cover for the baby but the snails love them aswell.

How many assassin snails would you recommend for a 55 gal, planted, fresh water tank with 4 guppies, 6 tetras, 1 cory and 3 swordtails, a tank over run with hundreds snails. We have tried everything including starting from scratch.

I like snails because I think they are the best scavengers you can get they can get down into crooks and crannies where even the catfish or loaches can not get that excess food! to control them I just use DYI snail traps made from a soda bottle

I keep Kuhli loaches,Zebra loaches,Black Neon Tetras, and a bunch of Otocinclus Catfish for the algae. Somehow I wound up with MTS from the fish store but I really like them now that I know more about them :) You rarely even see them when the lights are on. I found out the Kuhli dont really eat snails, is this right ? If so its just the Zebra Loach who have decided they really like snails. Theres still quite a few but not a ton. There used to be a lot of them on the glass and a carpet of them on top of the sand at night, I can't even take a guess at how many..

I think you are right. I don't remember my kuhli loaches doing a whole lot with snails. I like MTS too - always so crazy when the lights first come on how many there can be, but they go back into the substrate when the lights are on!
