Good video. I moved into a neglected 2 acre property and did a major renovation on an old house in a semi-rural area of Surrey. Builders destroyed about 1/2 an acre of lawn with heavy equipment and storage of building materials. I have finally managed to get grass growing on almost all of the lawn, testing different seed mixtures in different areas (shade, trees, direct sun, I have it all). My current problem is that there are fields on 2 sides of my property and I have several different types of weed grass invading my renovated areas. I don't use weed killers as I have a lot of very active wildlife that I don't want to discourage as well as young children who use the lawn frequently as a play area. Thanks for sharing your great ideas and experience!

I only recently got into lawn care, and although my lawn is looking the best it ever has, after years of neglect it has huge patches of Yorkshire fog (velvet grass), making up about 30% of the lawn. There isn't a ratio as such Key is a couple of good handfuls in the bottom of the bucket before you start. I have Poa Annua in my lawn. I only had the lawn laid this time last year and spent the last 3 days cutting out this feckin weed. It's driving me insane. Just when I think my back breaking work is done - I see another little bunch of this damned weed poking out from somewhere. I have a little girl that loves rolling around in the grass and I am trying my best to keep it healthy in the most natural way possible but I want to just pull it up already and be done with it. It's only a small back garden and all of the neighbours love looking down at it so I try to keep it as pretty as possible (I'm on the ground floor in a block of flats) because I'm the only person around that tries with their garden but my patience is wearing thin. I've spent a small fortune on Canadian grass seed, I am digging out the weed, I'm trying to leave the lawn for longer periods without watering, and I still need some help - even after watching your video. Every now and then I get the fork out and go around the garden to get air down there. I have reseeded 3 times since having it put down (the lawn food with seed included). I have also top dressed the lawn twice as it was very clay heavy soil. I'm at my wits end. Please help me before I totally give up on this garden and have it all taken out. (Great vids by the way).

I was told once that a weed is any plant you don't like the look of or is in the wrong place. So you decide if it's a weed or not, if you don't like it then it's a weed, if you like it then it isn't. Just apply that logic to your lawn.

You say don't cut your lawn too often, but how much is that? What's the ideal mow schedule for cool season grasses not under summer stress?

thats too open ended, depends on your mower, weather, normal height of cut etc to answer properly

another great video Robbie 👍👍👍, I'll be honest I couldnt tell the difference between that weed you identified and 'normal' grass 🙈, still got to learn alot!. We had a new lawn laid just over a month ago now, to replace and existing but worn area. It wasnt laid in very good conditions at all.and I would have preferred the gardener to have cancelled until a better day weather wise, it was very wet, I was worried about compaction of the soil, Saying that it has actually turned out to be a very decent looking lawn, I've been watching your videos for a while now 👍, and feel I've got a much better understanding now. I've cut the grass (first cut) on the highest setting available and all seems good. My question is, when should I aerate it? and with which type of machine ? (I cant find a plugging one?) I am careful to not over water the grass here but being in Manchester, mother nature is a great help! I'd love to be able to maintain it as best I can 👍👍. keep up the great work, best wishes to you!

Yorkshire Fog is slightly hairy, it is very soft grass and has silvery green hue, you can see it very well after it rained because instead of getting wet water forms a few on it's hairs. It grows in clumps. Poa is different the easiest way to identify it is by the fact it has seed heads nearly all year round, even shortly after mowed as those heads are good at avoiding the mower blade.
@ravenmaster63644 жыл бұрын
CMDR Sloma: many thanks indeed for this 👍👍, great information! So if Poa is able to avoid the blade, I'm guessing by lowering this it would be more effective at dealing with it, yet I'm super wary of going too low with the lawn being new. When would you be happy to cut at a lower height please?
@CMDRSloma4 жыл бұрын
@@ravenmaster6364 The goal is to you use rake to lift the seed heads in order to mow them off. If you lower the blade you will end up chasing regrowing heads as those will be growing lower and lower each time, nearly at a ground level. If you lift them up, poa will regrow them at the same height. This way you can keep mowing at desired height. I was able to get rid of most of Yorkshire Fog, just keep an eye at single silvery blades reappearing every now and then and it will be kept in check in healthy lawn. Poa is much more resilient type, I mow at second to last setting so my red fescue can grow tall and dense so it starts to smother other grasses. This way I hope to beat Poa but it is ongoing battle. Good luck.

Really nice format of the VLOG ! Look forward to hearing about grass varieties/seeds. I don't really know what constitutes "fresh" grass seed (although I suspect something laying in the back of a dry shed for more than a year isn't ideal) .... perhaps you could share some thoughts. I'm contemplating some Johnsons Premier Pitch (there is a coated pro nitro variety available) - essentially a Perennial Ryegrass mix with Europitch (10%) Coumbine (35%); Eurodiamond (20%); Eurocordus (10%) & Monroe (25%) cultivars but boy - is it expensive and to be honest - I'm just guessing at what might be good - I would prefer a fine bladed grass rather than broad leaf varieties but appreciate a mix makes sense. Presumably when we get more consistent rain (I live in the south east of England and it's been quite arid most of the summer) it's a good time to overseed i.e. late August/September. Any guidance on the above would be very much appreciated.

Hi Robbie, great video, thanks - as usual! I started watching your videos to understand more about lawn care, particularly short grass lawn care. I'm trying to grow a little 50sq.m (very amateur) golf putting/ chipping green in my very dry and full sun garden (top of a hill in Wicklow) from seed (Westland fine grass seed) since April (planted over the general garden grass that I cut low and levelled off with sand and screened topsoil) - I know I should have dug up the ground first and started afresh...... I'm struggling to fill a couple of bare patches and have a fair few weeds growing through including clover with hard stems growing along the ground. I have been keeping dandelions and other weeds at bay by cutting them out in the main but have just sprayed Weedol lawn weedkiller on the lawn and feed it once a month with Miraclegro lawn feed. Anyway, I have the cut down to 10mm and its going okay but am thinking of aerating and topdressing with seed to fill in the bare patches. Just not sure if I should use a sterilised topsoil or sand for the topdressing and if I should use a different type of seed this time?. Any tips you might have would be welcome!
