I like waypoint because you can access your soil tests from years ago. And they will also send you free bags and prepaid labels at no charge. And soil PH is probably the most important thing in soil. If it’s off you will be putting fertilizer down and the plant can’t access it even though it’s in the soil.

I took cores from my front and back yard with the soil probe you recommended and sent the samples into Waypoint. I've used a different soil test product the last 2 years in early spring, but after reading a bit more about the type of tests, I do have some concerns about accuracy. It sounds like the RxSoil test uses the Mehlich-3 extraction method. Do I know exactly what that is? No, but it is a standardized test used by soil labs, whereas some other soil tests are not necessarily using a standardized test, which is important in my opinion. I've heard check with your local extension office, and I actually had a hard time figuring out where I can get a soil test locally, it takes some searching, and form-filling etc. So paying a few extra bucks for the convenience, a login to track your results and useful software can be worth it.

Do you recommend getting the soil test for both front and back lawns together or separately?
@rapfreak77972 жыл бұрын
Depends on how much you know about the existing condition. If you know they were planted at different times, different seeds, different solis then you should definitely do separate tests. The results of the test can help you to match conditions of the lawns so hopefully you can do just a single test in the future.

Thank you for going more in-depth with the soil testing and this recommendation. I have a 120 year old Hackberry tree in my front yard that causes a lot of shade, but the rest of my ~12,000 lawn is in full sun; would you suggest taking samples from multiple areas or is one spot the best way to test? I ask should the shaded area have different needs than the remaining yard, but understand mixing the areas may skew the results. Any guidance is deeply appreciated. Thank you and have a wonderful day!

There is no doubt the tree is taking nutrients from the soil in that area where the roots are so I might consider two tests in that case

Ryan I’m up here in Washington state and I have a question. Great news/bad news is my lawn is growing very fast (always has) and looks incredible, however it may be too much for me to cut 3-5 times a week due to my schedule. Do you recommend a retarder? If so what kind? Thanks
@benharrison58162 жыл бұрын
Look into plant growth regulator aka PGR. There is a granular called Slow Mow you can get at Lowe's or HD I believe. The spray product is T-Nex, but Amazon won't ship it to WA (I'm in WA as well). Not sure if maybe DoMyOwn might. It is a chemical though, and has warnings about getting it on your skin, so there's that. Other than that you could try using just slow release organic fertilizer as well so you don't get as fast growth, and should be better for soil health. I just get fertilizer at the big box stores because getting it shipped is expensive since it's so heavy.

@@benharrison5816 Slow release organic Nitrogen will release and activate at the exact time you do not need it for a cool season grass. During warm and wet weather. I also do not believe in slow release fertilizer period. I rather apply a fertilizer when the grass needs it and know it will be gone before it does more harm than good.
@benharrison58162 жыл бұрын
@@rey3472 To each his own. I personally have acidic soil which is typical of western WA. Evergreen trees dropping needles and shade around, moss every spring. So I think applying purely synthetic fert over and over is not going to help me out.

Considering N and K are consumed by the plant in ratio 2:1 the recommendation is ridicilous. To even sustain your K levels you will need 2:1 apps for the season. Your K is low so 1:1 for 1-2 seasons and retest will make more sense.

@ryan, I have to respectfully disagree on a couple of points. CEC is a soil characteristic you need to pay attention to since it helps with getting maximum efficiency (and economics) out of your irrigation, nutrient and herbicide applications. One of which is the organic material you removed in the soil cores. It has very little to do with the soil type in the way you explain them
