How to get started in Dog Showing

I've just come across this video. As someone who has been showing for years I found it a bit dry. Showing is loads of fun. You didn't mention how you can make loads of new friends at shows. How to find a mentor, which is really important for newbies as each breed had different nuances. How most people will have better results going to open shows than going straight to champ shows. Also, it would be great if this video was more advertised so more people could see it! We need more people showing and enjoying everything about the very well bred pedigree dog rather than picking one up from anywhere which could very well be a puppy farm or backyard breeder with no knowledge. Still, it's a good start.

Does it have to be a pure bred dog or can it also be a bunch of different breeds in a dog?

Has to be purebred and welbred, cause if it's a mutt the judges can't really pick a breed standard to use for it especially if it doesn't really resemble any of the breeds it's mixed with^^, and must be welbred which means it fits into the Standard in both health, temperament and structure

@@sportstikki aww also she can participate in sports if you want her too!!!(just no conformation since she won't fit into a standard) but any dog that can run and jump properly and has the drive to do it can participate in any sport you want!!^^

Yes iirc they are accepted in AKC, UKC, RKC and FCI^^, as long as they are welbred and purebred and of standard color they are allowed

In my country it's possible to show mix breed dogs in "match shows", where all dogs can participate. The dogs are more judged on function since there is no breed standard to be met if the dog isn't pure bred. If you ask around there might be similar inofficial shows near you. It's a fun way to meet new people and train your dog. It's also a good way to try it out, if you really like it you might want to buy a pure bred dog to do more serious showing with. Most of the time basic courses for showing are open to any breed or mix and go though basic handling like claw clipping, walking correctly on leash and stacking the dog (where I live at least) so it's the kind of thing that is good to teach any dog either way.

I think if you have a purebred dog but it doesn't have a pedigree I think it's still can show in juniors but you have to be under 18 and if you're not you can't show your dog without a pedigree

You can start with companion shows! 'Have-a-go' dog show in winsor or other charity event dog shows! You can also do other activities such as competitive obedience, rally, working trials etc etc

If the dog is a mongrel / unknown parentage does it mean it can never be present for dog show or be a part of kennel club?

Yes it can’t be shown or part of a kennel club.

You can Register your Dog on the Kennel Club Activity Register, even if it is a Crossbred, and you don't know the parentage.

At least in my country there are match shows, where mix breed dogs can participate. It's mostly for fun and the evaluation is slightly different and more focused on function since there is no breed standard to be met if the dog isn't pure bred. It's a good way to meet new people, have fun and see how well the training is holding up in a new environment with many distractions.
