What about the game settings? Is there something I should worry about, that you would consider essential or important?
@Altercate3 жыл бұрын
@@meunomeerique Good question! When you're just starting out, none of the settings are essential to change. But these are my recommendations: In the "Gameplay" options, I recommend making sure "Display Build Grid" is ON, and I also suggest that "Enable Simple Command Card" should be turned OFF, and "Show Flyer Helper" should be set to ALWAYS. I also prefer to set "Control Groups" to Unclickable (so that you can't click the icon on the screen by mistake and accidentally select the wrong units). Good luck and have fun! :)

This is THE video I have been looking for; one that explains the game using the foundational RTS mechanics. As soon as you talked about balancing "producing workers, avoiding supply block and spending your money", I had to hit the like button, because even though I suck at RTS games in general, I know that these things are the top three things that you need to do consistently before you can even play a coherent game. I find RTS really punishing for this very reason: you can't even enjoy the "strategy" part until you are fast enough to stay on top of the "real time" part, i.e. being efficient with your macro. I hope that I can get over this hump someday, because I really want to enjoy the depth of strategy and replayability that RTS games offer.
@Altercate4 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your kind words! I totally agree, and you hit the nail on the head in saying that you have to master the real-time component before you can even think about the strategy component. StarCraft is a harder game than most to *enjoy*, but once you get there, it's amazing. I'm glad you liked the video and I wish you all the best in your StarCraft journey! Let me know if there's any particular concept you'd want me to expand on in future videos!

Bro tell me about it
@alexanderxyz61462 жыл бұрын
I see where you'r coming from. To make it short, I don't think it's very intimidating. I always read the same in each of the 1000s of games I had installed and played, let me say simply "don't expect to be a pro right away" it's that simple of a life: *Accept that you are a newb and enjoy it!* To get to the point: So the solution is don't play vs veterans (system default). It makes for bad habits. Because you won't win fights = no training in micro much. (because when you lose army quickly there isn't much to control, is there) You won't survive your overall game long or get a grounded experience base build etc because of several impairments through the enemy... = no macro training much, and unrealistic balance picture in your head respectively. You could coinflip but it doesn't make for fun experiences when luck fails you. (otherwise it's still ok) Play vs AI for good habits actually . Particularly when you start out, or when you want to improve a certain skill, I got my terran bio++ micro from that fairly quickly like 10x(!) faster than in ladder games! (bc when in ladder anything goes wrong.. then your training has to be restarted basically... it's frankly said a stupid approach - for the begin that is. Use your brain. And btw also lots of the macro mechanics don't need another player AT ALL. For the thrill and still training try to play custom games vs players of equal or slightly higher skill (try to befriend them when you notice, not everyone is salty, hell even a salty "RE" can be useful, your choice). Increase difficulty over time which comes automatically. There are so many nice ways to play the game, team games, custom games, some modifications which are close to ladder or also monobattles or fast build can be a nice fun alternative from time to time to improve your mechanics and speed and awareness. And spontaneous thinking which IMO is so vital, because in ladder anything can happen. Then you won't be one of those that say "but you should have played unit x!!" Q_Q or "but your mutas should have arrived 1 minute earlier!" (he moved out) ... By the way: I don't say don't play vs pros at all, a single training game or a random game somewhere can be eye-opening when you watch the replay. But that's for discovery and checking what you learned, not for building habits. Ladder: - When you are new to ladder, you should lose your first 5 placement matches intentionally, or even 10. Because the system puts you to about platinum by default. Note: I say it as a one time thingy. You will then rise according to your skill. Another tip, never pay attention to your enemy complaining about you - it's really just salt and copium 95% of time, such as "oh that's an annoying strategy" "damn cheeser" or "can you play normal?!", the game's beauty is its diversity and you finding your favorite playstyle, multitasking and impairing your enemy can be as fullfilling as macroing. IMO the most fun is to try different things and sometimes it being quite trolly things, but in the end they will improve your perception of those units by miles, ultimately improving your "normal" play. But that normal play consists of so many small skills. So all in all just have fun exploring the different aspects of the game, and it's more fun to try that in your lower leagues :-) - Still in ladder, despite it being a warzone, try to focus on what you want to improve. Honestly that is sometimes harder than said in today's state of the game, because of what enemies can come up with and it taking all your attention, but still a good approach IMO. - And again if you don't want to waste your time simply ignore bad manner right away, people always try to find excuses for their fails by blaming anyone else's way, no matter what you will say. It's honestly miraculous with what arguments people can come up just to find excuses for NOT THEM having failed. (Copium. And in team games remind yourself of Dunning Kruger effect, people think they are right but mostly aren't, simply try to do your thing unless you are in an arranged team of course) Final note: Most important when you are new (to any new thing in the game, be it unit, strategy, or tricks) it's normal you pay attention to the new thing and take your time and are not looking at other things, so don't get frustrated about it's actually a normal healthy process. So don't worry and don't forget it's only a game 🙂 If you enjoy self improvement and longer investment beauty and really lots of diversity also through team games and else, you will enjoy this as a hobby for longer time.

This is genuinely the best Starcraft 2 video guide series I've seen. Like there are so many out there and a fair amount of them are the ones frequently recommended to people, they're not as well-paced and composed as this. I've played Starcraft casually since the first game's launch, but I never could wrap my mind around the fundamentals of proper play for competitive matches, so I stuck to campaigns and custom matches for the longest time. I felt itching for an RTS lately and came back to SC2 and going through this and your series really helped a ton for me to finally understand how to properly play and actually learn better along the way rather than feel like I'm not making any progress learning.

What really makes your guide stand out is the last part for me. Giving your viewers a way to practice all the cool things you just talked about that isn't just "Jump into PvP and eventually you'll get the hang of it" is so helpful. I definitely have developed multiplayer fear over the years and I like having a way in a new game to get a grasp of the muscle memory beforehand that isn't against a person. Coming from playing a crap ton of WoW, the process of sitting my character at a target dummy and endlessly just practicing my rotation, fine tuning my hotkeys, and really experimenting by myself is how I got good. It's been the first thing I've looked for in SC2, so this is just so amazing to find. Thank you Altercate, truly.

This was a fantastic video for the fundamentals of SC2 gameplay! Honestly I'm not too big a fan of teaching beginners build orders because it tends to make them play rigidly and predictably. So I love that you decided not to throw in a build order and instead opted for a standard playstyle to master to allow new players to choose whatever build orders match their preferred playstyle.

Meanwhile @32:32 he tells us to practice by playing a custom game against very easy AI... BUT I follow his line of thinking: to win, you have to destroy the enemy base. Easiest and surest way to destroy bases is to build a big army faster than your opponent. Fastest way to build a big scary army (mind games!) is to have a macro that is more efficient than your enemy’s.
@Kazmahu3 жыл бұрын
@@evshrug Plus the idea of the AI match isn't to practice beating the AI, just to work on the execution of your macro cycle in relative peace. The problem is when you start building bad strategic/planning habits around the AI when humans can easily work around it. So it's a good space to work on your own habits, but a bad idea to try and learn actual competitive tactics.

I love the mech build recommendation. Having new players focus on mech is an awesome way to ensure player growth. Barracks are easier to use, but quickly build an overrelliance on marines. Mech encourages the player to mess around with their other toys.

@Axel Ave wait, are you suggesting that there is another person who has mastered the basics of sc2? My mind is completely blown 🤯 And are you also suggesting that person put in less effort into producing their videos? Sign me up! I definitely want to watch videos going over the basics of sc2 from the person who put in less effort. Thanks for the recommendation!

I'm glad the community for this game is still active. I always wanted to return to it someday
@Altercate3 жыл бұрын
The pro scene is better than ever IMO! As for the community, it's definitely gone down quite a bit since the game's heyday in 2011-2012, but I think it's got healthy numbers and it doesn't seem to be slowing down too much! 😀

As a 41 year old gamer who feels out of his league with the kids of today....having never played any RTS of any kind (Rocket League and CSGO mains), this tutorial is perfect! I've been watching a lot of SC2 from guys like PiG, uThermal and of course Alphastar videos......... always too afraid to jump in and have a go myself, but your videos are so well executed that it doesn't seem quite as daunting as it did before. You certainly deserve way more attention to your channel, and I for one will be adding a notch to your sub count today :)

Thanks for your kind words and glad I could help! My number one tip is to focus on learning instead of winning, and remember that everyone is terrible at first - no exceptions! 😂 Good luck with the game and have fun!

Great tips man. It's been so long since I played starcraft, I was intimidated to try starcraft 2 multi-player. I jumped on the campaign and tried your strategy and have been pleased with how quickly I can rally forces and slam the objectives with ease. Thank you for posting such a well thought out and satisfying tip video. Keep up the great work.

Its been 4 years since i played sc2 (my wrists were suffering to much) but its always fun to see both noobs and veterans play. Great video man! The amount effort is you put on it is clearly tremendous!
@Altercate3 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much! 😍 Yep, the toll this game can take on the wrists is no joke... I've recently been trying to do more preventive wrist exercises. Not sure what effect it has so far but with the amount of time I spend in front of a PC on and off work, it can't hurt... 😂
