From what I’ve heard from many mechanics, closed throttle compressor surge (when you let of the gas a stututu) is fine for the turbo and won’t increase wear significantly, the issue is open throttle compressor surge (foot to the floor and you start to stututu) it’s very very bad for your turbo, it’s common when you block the bov on a Subaru, haven’t heard of it being an issue on other cars tho
@strider5119 Жыл бұрын
open throttle surge isn't so bad on the turbo, I'd say its bad for the engine, because you're forcing in more air (on throttle) than the car can make use of. Blocking a bov on a subaru shouldn't cause open throttle surge, it's likely someone blocked their wastegate line, which would prevent it opening and cause overboost, which will likely cause problems very quickly

@strider5119 Жыл бұрын
@@BMWe-ed2tn yeah but that's a different issue altogether
@racetrackalexander3818 ай бұрын
BOV and Wastegate are different features. Blocking a wastegate will cause the turbine side to build excess pressure in the exhaust manifold and when the turbo is at boost capacity, the stututu is the turbo spinning too much boost and causing the exhaust to back up. Essentially forcing the compressor to slow down while the turbine wants to go faster. This is when a turbo bearing goes into torsion. BOV is the release of pressure from the compressor side/boost pipe when lack of vacuum returns to the BOV. Don't block your wastegate, you might spool faster but at the cost of a turbo over time. BOV releases boost built up behind the throttle body, and the Wastegate release exhaust built up behind the turbo.
@DriftNick8 ай бұрын
It's not the exhaust backing up, the wastegate is not blocked in this video, it's caused by the throttle plate closing and the turbo moving into the surge zone which is low airflow (because the throttle is closed) and high pressure ratio, it does not slow the turbo down.
@SimonTamminen2 жыл бұрын

On a 9-5 it's not really possible without causing problems with check engine light and lower performance than usual as the 9-5 has a MAF sensor. You cannot delete the MAF sensor on a 9-5 and expect peak performance. Either get a non-MAF car or run the factory setup for optimal performance.

@@TurboNerd1302 It _is_ possible to do. The way to do it on a Trionic 7 engine is to move the MAF sensor to _after_ the turbo. It works, but the MAF is not designed for pressurized air which means it could cause loads of problems on its own. Deleting the air filter is going to shorten the life of the turbo a lot since even tiny sand particles hitting the blades will cause damage due to the high speed of the turbo. Also, the "flutter" is due to air being pushed back slowing the turbine way too quickly and this can also cause damage to the turbo.

I'm not going to be another person to say you're going to destroy your turbos prematurely, but I am going to be the person to say you are wasting energy to create a cool sound. After a throttle plate closes your charge pipes go from a state of high velocity high pressure, to low velocity even higher pressure, a diverter valve will take the excess boost and recirculate it back into the turbo, so during a shift the turbine can keep some energy. A blow off valve dumps to atmo so instead of preserving the energy it just dumps it allegedly to prolong turbo life but usually to sound cool. Compressor surging (turbo flutter) is the sound of air rapidly slowing the compressor, causing the need to spool up again in next gear, ironically providing worse performance than even a BOV. Turbo damage or not, I would not do this on any application you intend to compete with. It's more of a cool factor for cars that aren't actually really cool. My V10 TDI flutters like crazy because my anti-shudder valves are so caked with carbon they actually act like a throttle plate when I let off the gas and almost entirely seal the intakes..... no throttle body on a diesel whatcha gonna do xD

@@EctoGamer dude know you stuff before correcting people. no turbo will spin backwards because of flutter.
@eliaslundstedt5607 Жыл бұрын
@@EctoGamer Flutter is not the turbine stopping and spinning backwards, it's the blades chopping through the air at a different rate than the instant before due to a sudden pressure change, that causes the flutter sound. Kind of like when you swing a stick really fast, and it makes a swish sound through the air, compared to when you swing it a slower pace and it's quiet. Now replace the stick with turbine blades

I think people are going crazy for no reason. it`s simple. if you sutututu on throttle it`s bad for the turbo, if you sutututu when your foot comes off the throttle, congratulations! you`re one of the cool kids! everyone needs to relax! when there`s no throttle applied, there is no pressure on the exhaust side to oppose the pressure coming back to the turbine. what you hear is basically chopped air which obviously let`s all your mates know what`s up at your local mackey Ds drive through! but use an air filter! don`t suck birds and old grandmas through your turbos!

@@jonasthemovie It doesn't stop the turbo from spinning, it doesn't even cause it to slow down more then it does when running a blow off valve. "Dose is to keep the charge pipe at pressure, without stalling the turbo." Dose is just another term for flutter.
@DriftNick Жыл бұрын
@@jonasthemovieIf you think it stops the turbo you lack a basic understanding of what is happening so you calling other people clueless is hilarious, not only do you not understand flutter but you also don't know what dose means, it's a term for flutter from Australia mostly associated with VL turbos. High Performance Academy have a video in their channel named "Do You Need a Blow Off Valve?", using a turbo speed sensor they test running a blow off valve vs no valve and there is literally no difference in turbo speed after they lift off the throttle, not that you really need someone to test that to see that is true, if you have ever actually driven a car with and without valve you would know, it's also common place in racing and drifting not to run a valve, if it causes any lag that would not be the case.
