Our 1 year old labrabull likes jumping into a chair by the window, is this bad for her joints?
@graciewellsdogtraining9 ай бұрын
It’s not the best for her to be jumping around to much before her bones are fully grown, but jumping into a chair when she feels like it won’t do anything serious :) maybe give her a step to use , but not really necessary

1 year of age is the line most people draw when talking about stuff like letting your dog jump out of the car. Since what you’re talking about is minor than that, it should be safe to follow the same rule.

What do you mean by punishment? Cause if you mean moderate/normal punishment, we’re basically talking about telling your dog that you don’t like their behavior. If you recommend never doing this, it makes me suspicious.

Punishment should never go beyond verbal correction or negative punishment (taking away something good). It should never inflict physical or emotional pain

@@graciewellsdogtraining okay, well, to me this sounded quite different in your video, more like positive only training. When we talk about pain, I’m absolutely with you, punishment should not be inflicting pain. However, punishment can certainly make the dog feel uncomfortable. And most dogs have an easier time understanding non-verbal cues than verbal ones. So yeah, it’s a topic with many opinions and one can easily see how people on both sides of the spectrum can (and sadly do) go wrong.

@@cordo7051 no you have 0 reason to make your dog uncomfortable. There is nothing wrong with saying no in a nice way but it is not necessary at all. Using operant conditioning, classic conditioning, emotional conditioning and positive reinforcement you have 0 reason to even need to say no. This is not an opinion this is research and evidence. All research into any type of aversive at any level including making a dog "uncomfortable" (If you think a shock collar, choke chain or prong collar is just uncomfortable, someone has used conditioning to make you think that way, which is actually quite ironic) has shown they can become reactive, aggressive, make the problem you're trying to fix worse and is not as effective. This can also do the worst thing you can do in dog training which is ruin your relationship with your dog. Dogs should act out of want not fear, even being uncomfortable causes fear. So if its not as effective, unneeded and proven to sometimes harm your dog. All logic says you shouldn't do it.

@@cordo7051 Look up BF Skinner and the skinner box, it's why positive reinforcement works, always works, always will work, and works on all animals not just dogs and they used it to train 1000's of dogs with out aversives at all. It's also what slot machines use to addict people to gambling. Do you think it would be more effective if when you didn't pull a slot machine arm someone you didn't like started touching you to make you uncomfortable until you pulled the arm and he would stop, oh and you never win anything... Seems obvious doesn't it.

@@RobertOldford-o7t dude, I’m totally in with all the shock collar stuff, methods causing pain should be avoided. However, saying „no“ doesn’t equal a prong and doesn’t ruin your dogs mental health or your relationship with him. Quite the opposite, if you only do positive reinforcement, you basically deprive your dog of the boundaries that it doesn’t like in the situation they apply, but badly needs them for evolving into a healthy character. I find it quite difficult arguing with people like you tbh, throwing choke collars and saying „no“ all in one box of a terrible pet owner, neglecting that we’re talking about a spectrum where both extremes aren’t serving the dog well.

Why wouldn't you go to a dog park if you have a non-aggressive dog? If you're worried about reactive or aggressive dogs, they tend to mostly only show up on weekends so go on weekdays. It's good for socialization and training with distractions if done right.
@melissajenkins99609 ай бұрын
That’s one heck of a risk. There are a lot of irresponsible dog owners that just let their dogs run amok and it’s asking for trouble.
@cordo70519 ай бұрын
I guess that’s talking circumstances. If your local dog park is trash, you have many other options and you know many people with dogs, lucky you. If your dog park is fine and gives you what you’re searching for better than other places, fine, go ahead. It’s really not one fits all
