I paint the things I love. I always have 10 or twenty paintings on the go, at one time. I never want anyone to see my work, although the few people who have say they are very good. You should do art for arts sake. I love your paints!

I rarely paint based on impulse and immediately. I have subject in my mind and it stays there sometimes for months. I think about it when i have time and plan. Once i have planned the composition then only it is painted. You are right painting random stuffs is not much of help other than practice.

You mention painting from imagination. Is it possible to become good at creating realistic artwork without reference? Is there an efficient way to practice that?

I paint from my imagination always did It is never perfect. Imagination and thought for direction Not a fixture portrayed in oils for I start with one thought And the finished product is not what I started with over painting and changing direction such a joy in painting Imagination come into play when using the under paint To shine thru, Oils are a representation of something not a photo.

You have to work on your memory recall of subjects/objects and your drawing abilities the latter being the most important. If I said 'draw a human arm curled up holding a flower realistically' it would be difficult but people like David Finch will render a totally realistic one because he has practiced so much drawing over the years he has drawn an arm in that position many times and a flower from many angles and he would put the two together realistically. Unfortunately there are no short cuts.

Love this reminder to organize all my photos and have a plan. Unfortunately tried the Midjourney thing and my brain hurts 😂🤦‍♀ I'll dig deep and try to figure it out somehow. Could be helpful with subjects that are difficult to get good placement in a photo.

It is definitely a "journey" ! LOL It has taken me hours and hours to learn the interface and then additional hours and hours to get good results! I do think some of my best paintings have come from using it as inspiration though! And we are so early with this stuff, the interface can only get better!

AI image generators are literally going to revolutionize oil painting. After tinkering with MidJourney most of last year I literally bought your paints and ordered your easel and have begun my painting journey. All because I am able to come up with the kinds of reference images that inspire me.

It’s AI software called midjourney. It’s pretty cool how you can create images with the assistance of AI definitely a twist on what we’ve all been used to for so long.

As far as inspiration and source material, there was a video of yours that you used a scene screen capture from a movie. There are certain scenes from movies that I would like to paint (like a ship battle scene from Master and Commander) but I am not sure of the legal copyright issues involved. As an exercise it would be a great subject but I would, also, like to be able to share a photo of the painting or even sell it if possible. Does anyone know about copyright restrictions on movie scenes?

I own your paints, paletts and easel, which is all amazing. As for Ai I am not impressed but I guess it comes down to how you use it. I think most of today's artist are trapped in their subconsouis minds, they are not free of the burdens of society and therefore do not create the art that us humans once did. Most artist paint from a place of stress and anxious-ness. I think the art of today reflects that. Obviously there are great artist today. But I think we live in a much different environment than our forefathers. There are those of us that have made it our lifes goal to surround ourselves and live in nature and beauty as much as possible and in a lot of cases the great artist live in very beautiful surroundings. And I think that goes for life in general. You don't see much creativity from folks that live in busy cities and high stress environments. Love your video's and your dedication to us other artist. Thank you very much.

Just a thought: non representational ie abstract painting can be done from imagination without source/reference material and still would need not only creativity but skills like composition, color, tonality….

I am interested to hear more on this point as it relates to the video subject "How to Get Your Artwork Noticed". Mark's advice is that the subject is everything. Is that true of abstract paintings as well? Is there a "subject" in an abstract painting? I'm honestly asking, I don't know the answer to this, no formal art training here.

Absolutely. And one can use source material to paint that imagery in an abstract matter. Composition, palette, brush strokes, all carry the same importance as working in a photo-realist manner. I did a series of abstracts based on some photos I took of an old church from the 1800’s. It was a fun process.

using ai to create paintings is a ver bad idea because the generated pictures are partially owned by the creator of the ai so if you sell some of those paintings you could be sued for the money you made or you have to visibly credit them in the work

Like any copyrighted source material, just straight-up copying it will certainly lead to problems if you are selling. But like any other source material, if you are using it for inspiration and making your own composition, colors, additions and subtractions, there is no more an issue than any other source material. This is just another possible source for your creations folks, no need to be scared of technology!

@@heavydelta7615 well yes but that doesnt really work for realism right. its the 70/30 rule but if you have to change 30% and nothing can look exactly like the source its almost impossible to make a good painting.

I changed at least 80% of everything from the four source AI-rendered pictures I used! If this was a forum I could post the four pictures and show you the end result looks nothing like any of them individually! The definition of realism does not mean just faithfully copying a source!

Don't agree with the Ai - kinda takes down the process of creating and doesn't make that artwork yours. It's a difference when you look and create thumbnail, when you, yourself, do the mash-up and work in ps to create what you want. I find this Ai "omg it inspires me" sad. I think you would be surprised how much "mash-up" work is still needed using these programs. That seascape was a mash-up of 4 pictures, chosen from at least a hundred results, obtained after hours of trying to find the right input words to get a result. I found it to still be a creative process, much more so than just finding a photo that already exists and copying it. There were several things I left out and several things I added. Why would using an AI result be any different that taking a photo or a drawing that already exists and interpreting it for yourself? Just another tool. Cheers!

Right now it might be interactive but let's see how much it will develop to the point it takes over creativity and the process over creation. I take photos and when I look for reference I pre work it in photoshop. Guess my background as a digital artist. Us fine artist are safe for now due to our manual work but my digital art friends, some of them, are not happy at how and where this program is going. So wish I could sit down and talk about this more. Words ain't enough to express myself on how fast technology is taking over human productivity. Cheers and enjoy 👍🏻

Agree. The AI is basically just taking another artists work, an artist who remains uncredited (and unpaid!) and who most likely hasn't given their permission for it to be used.

Do not necessarily agree with all of this. I don't care to be noticed, that'll come when I'm dead. I paint pictures for people that mean something to them. If they give me source material that is deficient, I make changes that make it a proper composition. I almost never have 3 or 4 paintings going at the same time, that would really wreck my mojo. I immerse myself in the work I'm currently doing, I don't want my mind distracted.

Sometimes artist have a series in mind giving them direction and standards of subject matter. I worked with the greatest Master of Design, Don Victor Vargas of The Academy of Composition, over Zoom meetings. So o matter the commission that comes along..the design progress remains very good.

The problem with AI is that there is no life, no humanity or sense of awe or movement in the generated images. It is flat and without emotion like the robot that put it together. However, I suppose it can be used for making memes, just not art.

I personally think the photo realistic and old styled painting is fantastic but it’s boring to me personally It’s been done for 100s to 1000s of years, it’s basically just manual photography, just capturing the world I already experience When I think of art or fascinating art or art as an expansive tool I think of art as a way to tap into the metaphysical or the unexplainable or the deepest aspects or perspectives of the human mind When I see a dog I go, it’s really good, love the colour, love the brushwork, BUT it’s a dog, whoopdy do When I see something that I can’t comprehend and I am forced to get into the painters mind, or forced to adjust how I think in order to see the painting, I am far more drawn to that in terms of interest I want to view their dreams or something for example For example for about a year my recent project expands kusama’ infinity nets and also Agnes more logical works Where I’ve developed a way to sort of cause the viewer to hallucinate I’ve had viewers say they see faces, glasses, bottles I haven’t painted anything It’s all just very structured gestures and other very simple rules to create complexity Then the viewer completely creates the painting in their minds The viewer becomes the artist And it reflects the viewer, not me in any way I am no longer a participant

How to get noticed. Stop doing paintings. Do another form of art. People are more interested in newer forms of art. Personally I like painting but I'm not trying to get noticed, if I was I would do animations or 3d design.

Some people aren't interested in computerized art. There is something very individual and organic about the process of painting. I'll always be interested in looking at works of art and sculptures.
