Hey David, Love the channel; My set up in San Antonio Texas is to drain the flow hive usually around the 4th of July; no more flow, since the heat kills everything, then remove the Flow hive and store for the rest of the winter and place it back on in March for springtime. Normal Texas hive configuration is a Deep and a medium super that they will have full by the fall flow............I have been leaving one flow frame if it has capped honey in the freezer, then give it back to them in the spring to encourage them to start working the frames again...................

Very similar here in my part of Australia. I run a FD Brood box with an ideal and the flow super on top. For winter I remove the flow frames, tap any flow frames that are capped and freeze anything that is not capped. The flow super is returned to the hive in spring along with any nectar frames. In much of Australia it is mild enough to leave the flow super on all year.

Hi David. I have Flow hives. Question, please: What's to stop the Queen from laying in the Flow honey super if you're leaving it for winter, and if you remove the Queen excluder? I don't think I'd like to open the frames with brood in them. Many thanks for your advice here.

If you leave the flow super on for winter, will the queen move up and lay in it in the spring? I thought you dont want brood in the flow super? Limited experience with the flow hive so not sure.

I have 4 Flow hives and don't ever keep the supers on for winter. In fact, I pull them after the first harvest and then let the bees keep any honey they collect after that. The issue is having the queen move up with the bees and start laying in early spring. Then you have brood in your Flow frames, which leave behind a cocoon.

So interesting! So, when is the best time to harvest honey? 🍯

I'm in northern Iowa so it gets too cold to leave Flow super on. Its my second year keeping. I removed supers. Harvested what was capped in October and then let bees do clean up on robbing station. I froze frames and then stored in clear totes in unheated building. Any recommendations?

Could the queen lay brood in flow hive frames after you remove excluder and would that leave cocoons in the frame for next years honey storage??,

Soap that leaves your hands smelling like they've been uncapping would make you a millionaire.

Thank you for showing this, but what about the hive beetles? What did you decide to do to reduce them in that flow hive?

I use a small computer vacuum ,to vacuum up Beetles. After I vacuum up beetles, I have to use a bag over the end of the vacuum tip , with a rubber band to keep the beetles from escaping ,works great for me in the hive, when I see them on top of inner cover and different areas of the hive...I vac beetles and then freeze in a old coffee container.. but haven't tried it on flow hive frames.. I do vacuum up some bees but I try to let them go carefully not to let the beetles out...Good luck...

I live in a warmer climate than you, running one brood box and my Flow Hive super. We go down to 2 degrees C in winter with 20 during the day Last winter I left my Flow supper on with 4 frames full. The girls ate 3 over winter I left the QX on because despite the temperatures, there is always something flowering here in Queensland Australia Its bow mid October (Spring) and I've just harvested two of my flow hives Just one point, I remove some of the Flow frames when I inspect the brood to reduce weight so at the same time I'm able to check the state of the honey. And yes, I keep a spare deep box to put them in while I'm inspecting
@keithpadbury9818Ай бұрын
If you leave the flow super on and remove the Q excl there is a chance the queen will move up and lay in the flow super. Does that matter? Come spring you can shake the bees down reinstall the QX and wait for any brood to hatch. Hmmm.

I removed my knock off flow frame box, by using an escape board overnight, about a week ago, put the box in the freezer over night then into my extraction room on a tray incase it dripped. Smelled so good in the room next day got about 2 gallons out of it for the first year. Let it drip over anther night then put in plastic bag and put it on the shelf. Wanted to try it as an experiment, will probably give it another try next year. Maybe.
