I did the same with a #4 double long spring 2 years ago. However, I was on a beaver dam and both ends of the drowner cable were anchored. I had a hell of a time finding a firm place to set the trap. I ended up putting the head of the axe under the trap and was able to compress the springs. My thumb was only in the trap for five minutes at the most, but it was numb for a week!!!

The thought of snagged fingers dragging the grapple and the trap made my stomach tighten and eyes water. Glad you are no worse for wear. Buy a lottery ticket man!

Not a fun situation to be in for sure, I use #9 Alaskans and they are hard to set with two hands, I use a car broom to do anything around those traps and keep my hands clear at all times.
