HOW TO: Get YOUR MIDI Effects into Unify

I take you thru the simple steps to get your favorite MIDI Effects (that are not included with Unify) to show up and work as a MIDI Effect. We’ll use the VERY COOL Scaler 2 MIDI Effect in this example but the steps required work for ANY MIDI Effect.
Because the PlugIn Spec doesn’t have a check box for “MIDI Effect”, MIDI Effects are simply listed along with all of your INSTRUMENT Plug-Ins.
We’ll make a custom Sub-Set for MIDI Effects in this tutorial.

Thanks John! I picked up Scaler 2 in the current Plugin Boutique 10th Anniversary sale and it's one of the best purchases I've made! So far I've used it with layered sounds in Ableton, but doing so could see its potential in Unify! This video has been a great help to get me started!

Skippy, I came across a pretty cool new synth: Tracktion’s ABYSS. Beautiful UI, fresh new concept for quick sound design and patching. Developed by a new German indie, Peter V, aka Dawesome. I would love for you to have a closer look. Maybe someone (the developer or a user) can eventually Unify the 130 presets too. Anyway, just wanted to share my enthusiasm ;-)

The real fun starts, if you use more instances of scaler in different midi layers with different settings correspoding to different instrument layers. So you can play bass, chords and arpeggios the same time with pressing just one single key on your keyboard.

And that works for you? Because it doesn't always for me. If I use the sync function in Scaler 2 it will change the chords in all the instances of Scaler (as it should do), but I cannot get it to perform the right way... (arpeggio on one track, bass on another, etc.). It works fine in Cubase, but not in Unify... If it works for you I am probably doing something wrong...

I did some experimenting John. I do think I still prefer to load Scaler as a midi fx outside Unify. If loaded in Unify you cannot sync the scaler instances across differetn tracks. If as an external midi fx I can sync them across the entire project using unify or any other instrument. Unless I miss some sync function inside unify. Using the sync in scaler inside unify does not see any other inttances of scaler

Please look on the transport page - there are settings for how the clock starts and if it continues when notes off are received - set it to MIDI / Manual Stop for the results you want.

I have this set up exactly as you have described - but my sounds sound way fuller if I click open Scaler 2 and play the chords with my mouse or hit the virtual keyboard in Scaler 2 instead of through my midi keyboard - hope that makes sense? Any ideas? (Sounds like more reverb is added)

Mouse click probably equals keyboard velocity of 127. Hit musical keys ALOT harder 😊

Hi Reniar - MIDI Effects are especially difficult in DAW's to get up and running and are limited by and large to 1 MIDI effect in 1 Channel strip talking to 1 Synth plugin. Unify blows that out of the water - you can have 24 layers that are different synths being controlled by a single MIDI effect. ON top of this, Unify loads patches INTO your current patch - an ability virtually no other plug-in on the planet offers and we can do it without audio glitches in realtime. Lots of interesting doors that have never been opened are available to you with Unify. :D

If the MIDI effects plugin routes simultaneously to various MIDI Channels, how does one specify which MIDI channel goes to which instrument? Thank you!

Hi Luis! If you use the global MIDI Effect slot to load your MIDI Effect then you can route as many layers as you want to listen to a single MIDI Effect and then the part that is played is then determined by the MIDI Channel of each layer. You can also insert a MIDI Effect into a single Layer but then it is only talking to that one Layer Instrument. If THAT instrument is multi-timbral then the MIDI Channel assignments are then done in that specific PlugIn (Kontakt, Omnisphere 2 or Falcon for example of a few that are fully multi-timbral).

I am assuming that the global MIDI Effect will allow me to input or select the MIDI Channel for each Instrument to ensure that each channel (let's say CH 1 thru 5) goes to the proper plugin (receiving 1 or 2 or etc...).

@@LuisTorres-qz5kr - Between the parameters in the MIDI Effect and the MIDI channel of each layer, you should have no problem setting up anything you wish. Remember that since MIDI Channel is per layer and a global MIDI effect can talk to any Layer, you can easily assign 4 different layers (different synths/sounds) to the same MIDI channel for huge layers if needed. Something totally impossible in any DAW to accomplish - plus then save it and call it back up in seconds.

Hi Bro! Unify is multi-processor savvy so it 's very efficient. Some plugins are very CPU hungry and we can't do anything about that.... but the way Unify works will hopefully knock your socks off. Try the free demo version!
