My Sun Conure Shmoopy understands when I just say no in my normal speaking voice and she stops her loud screeching or sounds. I taught all my parrots to stop the bad things they are doing when I say their name with no Just the tone of my voice is enough. These hook beaks or bills are very intelligent when it comes to sense displeasure, happiness, affection in their owners/ buddies, voices just like dogs.

Thank you for this video! We just got a sun conure from our local bird rescue last month, she is 4 years old and very tame, but also very loud. I can't think of any other reason someone would give her up ): it's refreshing finding non-judgemental and straight forward advice like this, as we have no way of knowing what her life used to be like before coming to live with us, or what her old family might have reinforced with her in terms of behaviour. We're going to keep working on it! (If we can get a previously neglected/feral cockatiel to accept kisses and find confidence outside her cage I'm sure we can take on this challenge as well! lol)

Thank you so much, you provided logical points. In watching, I did come to realize that kiki doesn't scream a lot. He truly screams the most when I enter house after work. His cage is near large picture windows, and we feed wild birds outside, he sees them and sometimes screams at them. Overall kiki is a great bird, and I will try some of your points. Right now, after typing this, im going to let him out for some kisses, hugs and snuggles, because he's being quiet. Thanks again so much!!

My conure doesn’t scream too much. I have tried to train him to be quiet using methods you suggested from when I first got him. He has also never been one to squark in the morning or at bed time. But a cute thing he does is tells me when he want to go to bed by saying ‘step up’. He also screams when he sees a big bird outside! Lol

@PoodlesandParrots
@PoodlesandParrots 3 жыл бұрын
It honestly happened naturally! I wouldn't react to the screaming and he started making these little cute sounds instead so when he made those sounds I reacted and gave him the attention he was seeking. Over time he learned when he makes the soft sound "he gets what he wants" so it trained him to make this sound instead of screaming :) it's similar to capturing - where you capture something or some sound in this case that you want to see or hear. :) I am sure I can do a short video on this in the future!

I got my sweet pea (sun conure) like two months ago and he’s sooooo picky with his training treats😂 He will only have dried papayas for training, hates all other fruit and hates seeds of all kinds😂 He would choose his healthy pellets and veggies over any other food😂 The best way to find out is to just try to see what he loves the most! And use that to train instead of a regular part of it’s diet. I bought a 3lb bag of unsalted sunflowers specifically for training that has been collecting dust because he doesn’t like them anymore😂

The best and really only pellets I recommend nowadays is TOPs pellets - they are cold pressed. I have a whole playlist on diet and nutrition for birds which I encourage you to watch because parrots need a lot of variety in their diet including veggies and other raw foods otherwise it could lead to health concerns. I never recommend an all seed or seed and fruit diet as it’s too much fat and sugar in their diet especially for captive birds. kzbin.info/aero/PLoYdTQtgMFfVDbWy3AzCin4on0B1tjcpz&si=pBXy9Eqn-zD90yRT

Very helpful information. We have a very vocal and loud pineapple conure, and our big challenge is that we live in a 1-bdrm apartment, and the main room is open concept kitchen/living room and since last March, my office as I work from home now because of Covid. Her cage is literally 7-8 feet away from my work space, so she always wants to be out and squawks incessantly to that effect. We have no other space we can move her cage to, and I can't have her out all the time as she won't let me work at the computer when out (attacks the mouse/keyboard, etc.). She also loves to squawk in reply to kitchen noises such emptying the dishwasher, putting dishes away, food prep, etc. Some days it's really draining, and putting her cover over her cage for 5-10 minutes would buy us a bit of respite. Is it really always a bad idea to do that? Not sure what else we can do as we don't have the luxury of her having a separate room.

Thank you I am so glad it's helpful! I know it can be hard to have a loud conure in an apartment not only for our neighbors but especially when we WFH... Mango is the same he won't let me get anything done unless he tired he will nap on me but that doesn't happen as often as I would like and usually I find it too cute to do anything anyway!😆 - I am sorry to say but covering her cage is a very bad idea, you should not cover your bird as punishment or to stop them from screaming. This practice does not correct behavior problems. It might make life temporarily easier for you, but it makes life worse for your bird. I shared lots of helpful tips in the video, perhaps if you can put her near a window she might enjoy looking outside, or putting her in front of the tv to watch the companion series I linked in the description. Include her in your morning routine and on your lunch break take some time to do target training and flying sessions so she can spend some of her energy, additionally playing some nature music and avoiding the loud sounds from the kitchen when possible and don't forget to reward her whenever she is quiet😊 hope this is helpful you can review the video again to take note of the different things to try and do :)

Hello, thanks for loading up the helpful videos and taking the time to make these its much appreciated! Maybe you can give me a couple tips on our new edition to the family "Roary" lol. We recently adopted a rescue sun conure that is 3 years old. It's only been a day or 2. I know patience is a virtue but we are a little concerned that "he" might have been abused. So today, we started with a breakfast of apples an some snap peas. There is a pellet mixture of 80/20 pellets to seeds (we think he might have been on 100% seed by previous owner because of foraging for seeds only this evening past all the pellets). But today, roary lunged at my wife's face around end of breakfast with distilled water for bathtime(trying to figure out routine). We thought it just might have been an accident and it was trying to land on her and thought nothing else of it. He did land on my shoulder yesterday once. today he landed on my shoulder but just started to repeatedly biting my neck hard (like aggressively drew blood). When I was walking away from the cage but close for flight. One person suggested in a reddit to leave him in the cage for a few days but idk that just doesn't feel right. He is very nippy at fingers near the cage and bit my wife's fingers twice and drew blood. I don't think there has been any targeting training done at all, perch stick up and down doesn't work, and just starts screaming like crazy when you get close to his cage, walk into room, or come in through front or back door. He will start flipping this bell and reflective toy and just yelling it feels like. There is also a hidey hunt in there and I'm thinking about just removing it completely because it could be a source of aggressiveness to protect it maybe? They don't technically need one right? I know that was a lot but what are your thoughts?
@PoodlesandParrots
@PoodlesandParrots 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks we are happy to help! It sounds like you need some experts to help you with Roary, so I want to start with recommending a consult with BirdTricks: birdtricksstore.com/products/consultation-option-1?rfsn=4048129.56de1&_pos=1&_sid=922a6621b&_ss=r I wouldn't recommend leaving him in the cage that may only result in the behaviour getting worse, he can get "cage rage" and won't build trust with you. Target training is important, also implementing the tools I suggested in this video, fixing the diet and building trust. I would also recommend the natural feeding system so whole foods in a chop form for breakfast and even dinner along with pellets. A lot of behavioural issues can be stemmed from the diet. If you struggle with Roary eating veggies try birdie bread, steaming them or creating fun kebabs for him. It definitely seems like he has some history and needs to build trust with you, underneath these behaviours he is a loving bird. Additionally, cuddle or hide huts are not needed and I would recommend removing it because they can bring out hormonal symptoms which can include aggression. Hope this helps! Good luck!
@S1ph3r
@S1ph3r 3 жыл бұрын
@@PoodlesandParrots thanks for the response! I have been following bird tricks for a few days looking up this behavior as well. Very good recommendation 👍👌. Might have to do the consulting. Since I last posted, I did remove the hidy hut and we upgraded the cage he came with to a big huge one for him. We also added new toys and got rid of some of the trigger toys he would go to when being aggressive. I did a short training session with him today and behavior has been much better. He still screams sometimes but I rather work on the aggressiveness first. He was eating breakfast today and we are so happy he started eating healthy foods.

@@S1ph3r break-throughs are great! so happy to hear about that! :):) YAYYY. Target training can also be done using a clicker - although we don't usually use one! and a fanny pack with your birds fav treats - it can take time to figure out which treats they LOVE but if it helps our Mango's are almonds, cashews and pistachios, I break them into smaller chunks ie one almond can be broken into 6 pieces or 4 for bigger rewards. @Poodles and Parrots you make really good videos. So Mia does sound just like Nahla. But her screech sounds worse than Mango in terms of pitch and such. Also independence might be a personality thing bc Nahla goes for a while on her own in the apt as opposed to my first gcc which preferred to always hang w me. And my first gcc in general was way more quiet in terms of how often he called out or contact called. Which is why I'm wondering if this particular sun is more like my first gcc. But when it does call out it will still be loud like a sun....

Okay so I need some guidance! Have a male Sun Conure ( about 4 yrs now ) and we had a great relationship! One day, as I was working out he came over ( probably spooked at something) and bit me hard on the neck ( drew blood .. and a good amount ) I shrugged him off but he came back and bit me again! This time, I slapped his beak and ever since that day ( been about 2 months now ) he hates me 😟 and screams whenever I'm around in the room ( I have 2 Sun Conures, the second one is a female about 6 yrs old and she absolutely loves me .. I realize I've lost his trust but what CAN I do to mitigate this misfortune? I'll start by suggesting a few other videos that may be helpful; kzbin.info/www/bejne/rojCdpuemL6An80 & kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOygmNpoJWVeKs. I will be completely honest I have heard of people losing their bird's trust, and it can take weeks, months or years to gain it back. I've even heard of someone who never regained the trust back but make sure to never strike your birds again; if they bite, it's obviously painful but think of how big you are compared to them and how much more force and strength you have than they do. 💔Hitting a bird is never an appropriate way to discipline or train them, and it can have long-lasting negative effects on their trust and relationship with you. Be patient, use positive reinforcement, and as you've been doing, give your bird space; don't force interaction or try to touch them if they are not comfortable and talk in a calm, nice tone. Best of luck 🥺

Thank you! I would not give attention until the screaming stopped, once it stopped I would go to him for different periods sometimes a minute sometimes more I didn't time it but in addition to this whenever he is quiet on his own either in his aviary or around the house I reward him for being quiet. About to bring home my 1st Sun Conure but have lots of bird experience. Wondering if I should cover him every night. What do u do w Mango?
@PoodlesandParrots
@PoodlesandParrots 3 жыл бұрын
That's awesome! Birds should get 12 hours of dark quiet sleep time each night - if it's available to you to put your bird's cage/aviary in a separate room - blinds closed, lights out, this would be the best option. If it's not available to you then covering the cage will do. Sometimes covering their cage can bring out hormonal behaviour as well that's why if you can offer a dark cozy quiet spot in your home for sleep your bird will love it.

You can do it anytime they are quiet and doing it throughout the day every time you notice is helpful in training them to know that this is more of what we want and they get rewarded for it 😊 - if they’ve just been screaming I would wait a few minutes and ensure they are quiet for a bit before going to reward. You can think of it sort of like capture training we reward the behaviour we want to capture in this case more quietness ☺️ cheers!

One thing to remember that is VERY important is this - the key distinction of LOUDNESS vs NOISINESS. People often get the two confused. For example, budgies/parakeets are very noisy but not loud at all. A few things I can share from my experiences with Skittles AND living in an apartment building (and living across from one of "those people" who insist on quiet) and having Skittles for ten years, is this - 1) CONSISTENCY is key. Set boundaries and keep them. Have a system in place and follow it. 2) Try and reach a mutual agreement with your conure. Skittles and I have a routine where he knows to do certain things when he needs/wants certain things. For example, he flies over to the top of the fridge and wags his tongue when he wants juice. He flies onto the faucet ruffles his feathers and sneezes when he wants a bath. If he goes "on alert" when he sees an 'intruder' (aka bug) I go and kill it and he quiets right down. Hes notorious for that. In fact he stares right at it til I kill it. He misses NOTHING. What I have found is he never screams for no reason. He does sometimes get vocal for a little bit in the afternoon but its nothing unbearable and never for too long. He also lets me know when its his bedtime. He was already potty trained so he is free-flighted. Im disabled and home all the time and hes out with me all day and that is one of the main reasons hes so quiet. I've no doubt if he was in his cage all day or most of the day hed be MUCH noisier. They are VERY much velcro birds. But I always wanted a velcro bird and I don't mind it one bit. He even keeps visitors away. Hes not properly socialized cause I hate having people over, so thats one drawback. I rarely have people over so hes super possessive which really is not a good thing for anyone except in my case it is cause of my unique situation.

I live in townhouse and I want to get a sun conure. But these videos discourage me a little because I don't want to upset the neighbors and later if they want me to get rid of bird I won't do it! I don't know how to go about it What should I do? Please guide so I can take right decision. What would u do if u were in my place? Ps: the earlier owner of this house had 2 kids and neighbors seem fine with it. Do two kids make same amount of noise as one sun conure?
@PoodlesandParrots
@PoodlesandParrots Жыл бұрын
I think ultimately the decision is up to you! Having experience with a sun conure, I can say that they can be very loud, louder than kids, but in my opinion, kids can be loud for longer periods, whereas a sun conure is louder but probably for shorter periods (again, this depends!). All your neighbours will know you have a bird... you can also tune into our podcast for tips from different bird owners... one of our recent guests also has a sun conure kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqLLYZqOqb-ngq8si=5mytm_TpP7eeUt4s ; another guest has mentioned that if you are concerned about noise than a parrotlet or budgie may be a better option. I can also add that green cheeks, although they can also be loud, are not as* loud as a sun conure, but all in all, parrots are loud pets🥰. I also don't think neighbours can dictate which pets you choose or if you should "get rid of them," but I do encourage you to do a lot of research before getting a parrot because they do take a lot of time, patience, understanding and care. All the best!

Another solution is to play AC/DC at 120 decibels to drown him out. Every morning around dawn the local wild parrots in San Diego start screaming to each other and it sets off my Sun. He’s a reliable alarm clock. In late afternoon, the wild red crested Amazon flocks fly home to their roosts while screaming the entire time. That sets off my Sun again. It’s only for a short time twice a day and I forgive him without reserve.

I think I’ve tried everything to get my Sun Conure to stop screaming but she won’t! The poor girl has a defect and her wings never grew past the main bones. (Not sure if it was a bad breeder I bought her from or if it’s a birth defect,as the vet can’t tell) so she can’t fly. I have to taxi her around everywhere. She seems to have abandonment issues as soon as I try to leave the room but she has never been abandoned. Do you have any ideas for a flightless Sun Conure? I am always with her but she won’t even let me move 2 metres away without screaming. Do you think it’s because she can’t fly? Should I get her a fellow Conure? Any other suggestions?

That’s a way to bond with a conure, and it might help keep them quiet while they’re cuddling with you - if they want to cuddle! However, it won’t necessarily stop them from being loud at other times-sun conures are naturally vocal birds. It’s good to have a plan for managing their noise when they’re not with you or when you are busy.

I’ve had my female sun conure since she was about 10 weeks. She is 2.5 years now I imagine that she thinks I’m her mother since I fed her since birth, and took care of her. But lately, I think she views me as her partner. She screams if I put her in her cage and I’m not around. She spends most of the day outside of her cage on the top, playing and cleaning her self. But as soon as I walk out of the room, she goes crazy and starts screaming. She also (for lack of a better word) “offers” herself to me. If I’m just chilling on the couch with her, and she’s sitting on my lap or my arm, she will wrap her foot around her long tail feathers and move them out of the way and back herself up to my hand,arm, whatever she can. It’s very uncomfortable for me and awkward 😅. I try to scratch her on her head or around her beak, sometimes I’ll slip up and scratch her on the back of her neck and next thing I know she has slid up a little bit and I’m scratching her back and that’s what seems to arouse her… anyway, I’m going to try some of these tips to get her to quiet down a little bit. Thank you. They sound like they will really work. I’ll get back to you in a week or so.

Where there's a will there's a way! Where is Iko when someone is going up and down the stairs/ at the door ... can he see them walking up and down the stairs or walking through the door. Perhaps moving him to a new location so he can't see it - out of sight out of mind. If he hears it and that's the trigger there's a few things you could try like moving him where he hears it less, playing calming music, using target training to distract him, reward him when he doesn't scream, etc.

I can attest that the spray bottle will not only not work but it can make things worse for me. About a year later my conure was on my shoulder and I picked up a spray bottle for the plants. I then experienced the dreaded hard forearm bite through the shirt. And it happened whenever I mistakenly picked up anything similar to a spray bottle then progressed to Scissors from getting wings clipped, the bottle brush from me pushing her aside with it. So don’t do any physical negative reinforces including covering or it can come back to bite you.

@@antonianicolaou4778 what do you mean he is eating cream? Birds should not eat cream… do you mean formula? I suggest getting a cage instead of a box and making it bird safe. It sounds like you should connect with a bird behaviourist, check out bestbehavedbirds.com and you can let Sophie know Sandra sent you. It’s normal for birds to make a mess when they are eating, it’s also normal that as baby birds grow they become more vocal. Have you ruled out illness and injury by getting a check up with a qualified avian vet? If the bird is still young and you aren’t confident in caring for it you may want to consider finding it a home with someone who has bird experience. Where are you located? I know it can be disheartening but imagine how the bird feels, their needs are not being met and he’s stressed, finds at outlet (screaming); the human gets frustrated and disconnects. Hormones in suns start at 2 years old + once they have reached sexual maturity so I don’t think it hormones if your bird is that young! You can also book an online avian vet to see how they can help and their opinion, vetster.sjv.io/bak3bm . Please take care of this baby bird, it’s really not fair to the bird and if they are scared and screaming all the time there is an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

haha! They will be more relaxed with nature or classical music but they are very active and love to dance so you can play any music to see what they like to dance to! :)

My son has a green cheek. Our problem is not getting Screamy to be quiet when my son is home. It is getting him to shut up when my son is at work. Others in the family work nights, and we need him to be quiet so others can sleep. He screams fairly constantly every 2-3 minutes, all day long, until my son gets home from work, then again any time he has to leave the room. And Screamy don't really respond well to anyone but my son.

It sounds like the bird has bonded with your son really well, but this can be an issue referred to as over-bonding to one-person bonding. You can try a course of quiet for parrots by BirdTricks: bit.ly/3lkjQJT I would also suggest working with Screamy to develop bonds with everyone in the family, and over time you can correct this. Check out my video on bird bonding: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOygmNpoJWVeKs ; it's important to socialize birds properly to avoid aggression, over-bonding, screaming behaviours, stress on the bird, etc. It takes time, but it's worth it for all! I hope this helps!

Hi , Thanks for sharing these helpful tips. I’ve got a male sun conure and he scream a lot during sunset , around 6 pm . Should I distract him by giving something to eat before he starts screaming?

Your welcome! Happy to help, you can use any of the tips from the video but if you are going to distract him you want to time it out and do it BEFORE the screaming starts - it could be food, toys or target training. You want to distract him before the screaming starts so that he doesn't think "if I scream I will get food". Hope this helps!

In the morning I wake early so I uncover spuddie and give him a kiss and take him to the kitchen sink to do his first poo poo of the day it’s kind of a milestone lol Every afternoon around sunset spuddie screams for bed yeah it’s annoying sometimes. but I actually trained spud NOT to scream on my shoulder in the early days. When I first got spud he would constantly scream in my ear so I would return him to his cage until he settled down. So that’s his punishment. Also for toilet training did this too now he poos on command. I’m new to KZbin and have started blogging our life mummynspuddie I’m a mum to a toddler too

Spuddie sounds very sweet! Screaming for conures is normal but luckily there are ways we can train them to scream less and not in our ears :) ...although I would recommend not using "punishment". We don't want to punish our birds but rather redirect them, train them and reward them for the behaviour we want to see. Cheers! :)

My sun conures are very quiet not noisey at all but they are loud voice wise when they get the urge to scream but it's really not much. They never scream in the morning or the evening. I'm Lucky i guess
