Put yourself in your sons shoes and think about all you do for him. Now ask yourself, as a teenager, would you want someone doing all these things for you? As an adult, you would appreciate it, but as a teen maybe not. You have a son, and I think we moms with sons don't quite understand their nature. Start to learn about teenage boys and what their nature is. As a parent, we have to revert back to how it felt being a teenager to understand them more. Try to find a male you trust to pick his brain about what it means to be a teenage boy. Get his perspective. Open up to your son (be vulnerable) share your downfalls about when you were his age and your struggles. I think teens can spot bs and we as parents aren't real with them. They think we think we are perfect. They need to relate to us on a human/real level. Our projection, fears, control, invulnerability, perfect, ways as parents causes us to no connect to our teens. You definitely need to take a different approach. I am a single mom of two teen boys .Trust me, it is WORK. I had to change my ways and start learning and accepting them and working with them. Become his "friend." Start doing things he likes. Start asking him questions about what he likes, feels, etc, but all without judgement. Also, but careful not to react in an explosive, judgmental way. He'll shut down. Create a space of acceptance for him. That's what he may need. I hope this helps. Implementing these techniques has helped. They still are going to go through stuff and drive you crazy, but it's just where you are right now. Start building for a better relationship and see what happens. Just try it out and see what happens!
