Wait, I have a question. I am new to welding and I have not buy any tanks yet but can I use a helium tank? I think you answered this question in some way but more specifically I am referring to those used at party rentals.
@PranaTech
@PranaTech Жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as it is a large high pressure tank and not the little pink helium tanks that are sold to the public for parties. Just make sure that your local welding supply will exchange a helium tank for a argon or argon/Co2 mix tank before you go buying one. I don’t want you getting stuck with one. 👍😊

Great video but a word of warning for others before you go running out and buying tanks is to call your local gas suppliers FIRST to make sure they'll accept exchanging a tank from a different type of gas. I had found two 281 CF oxygen tanks on my local CL for $100 each and was about to pick them up but then called up the gas suppliers first before buying. Everyone I talked to said they would only do an even cylinder swap for a cyclinder with the same gas valve. This is the Bay Area of Northern California. I'm jealous of people living in areas where the gas companies are more chill about the exchanges. My local Airgas store just quoted me ~$800 for a 125 CF bottle of Argon if I did not have a bottle to bring in for exchange!
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin! Well that is a real bummer! Here in Tucson, the dealers are so short on tanks that all they care about is the steel. Airgas told me the other day that they are only exchanging tanks now and aren’t selling any more tanks because they only have a supply enough for exchanging. The will order a tank for customers but it will be about A year and a half to get one. They have over 3500 tanks on order right now.☹️

Something you didn't mention is leased tanks. A lot of the tanks you find around are property of a company and are NOT abandoned. These tanks will NOT be accepted by a shop to be exchanged or filled unless you have the lease papers. The tanks are usually stolen. Most leased tanks have the name of the lease company stamped on the collar right below the valve. Steer clear of leased tanks since you can be charged with possession of stolen property.

Yes, most modern tanks have a DOT stamp on them and the last 4 digits is the test pressure rating for the tank. Most of the tanks I find are 2200-2400psi ratings. Hope this helps!😁👍

The problem is fighting with a big gas company to even take that tank for fill-up and not try to get you to take their own on a lease. All I have close in my area is Airgas and nexAIR, and from what I understand, they make it such a pain in the balls to fill up a customer-owned tank (125cu or more) that it almost forces you to rent their tanks just to avoid the hassle. There really aren't any small local welding shops in my area anymore, and if there were, they were bought up by Airgas. Otherwise, this is an awesome way to save on bottles as long as you can verify the DOT stamp and inspection date.
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 4 жыл бұрын
Well that stinks! Here in Tucson the competition is pretty widespread and we have enough smaller companies that they can’t pull that crap. Airgas tries to charge $50 for a tank that is out of hydro test and so they lose a lot of business because of this. The smaller companies only charge $10-$15 dollars when you exchange a tank out of hydro. Airgas definitely has the worst reputation here in town.

the oxygen and acetylene tanks may be considered the same for purposes of buying and selling empty tanks but they are certainly not the same inside acetylene has acetone and a porous mass inside the cylinder, oxygen tanks have no such stuff, hence you also can't fill an oxygen tank with acetylene or vice versa
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 6 ай бұрын
Hi Larry! Yes, you are absolutely correct on all points! Acetylene is a low pressure tank and has much thinner steel so I generally stay away from them because most shops will only exchange a high pressure tank for another high pressure tank. At least that is the case here in Tucson. 😊👍

It seems like the 50CF-125CF size tanks sell easier than the larger 200 CF+ tanks? Curious what categories you list them in when you sell... "Tools" or "Business" or "General" ?
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 3 ай бұрын
Hi there! Yes sometimes the smaller ones do sell faster. It does seem to depend on the types that are looking at the time I list though. The DIY garage guys tend to prefer the smaller tanks and the more serious guys tend to want the larger tanks. I sold two large tanks to a guy a month ago and was wishing I had more. I usually list in tools but it seems most people find them by search terms rather than categories of listing. 😊👍

Good morning Sar! That is great that you got your tank for free! I am going to assume that it is a CO2 tank since you said that they were using it for sodas. If it is CO2 then it will work great for Mig welding just as it is. You will need to get a specific regulator designed for CO2 tanks and welding. There are a lot of CO2 regulators that are made for growing or soda dispensers that don’t have accurate flow meters for welding. Have fun and let me know if you have any other questions. 😊🙏Don

Hi Dan, I’ve had my best pricing through Matheson’s welding supply at Grant and I-10. They will take your smaller tank in trade and I’ve even traded two smaller tanks for the equivalent larger one through them. So I don’t always go for the full size tanks. If I can find a couple of the smaller tanks for $40-$50 then I just trade those for a larger one. Since making this video, the competition here in town has gotten higher. I know of a couple guys doing what I was doing and I’m sure my video was watched by a few here in town.😊

I’ve had a terrible time getting anyone to approve anything to do with Aircrete. No engineer anywhere will stamp plans for any home built Aircrete blocks. Without an engineer’s stamp, Pima county won’t even consider alternative building designs. ☹️ There is a couple on KZbin down by you that are building an Aircrete house, but it is in Santa Cruz county and they have a built without code allowance type permit. I am going to build a workshop as well and now I’m looking at just building it out of Rasta or ICF.

That’s a good question! What I do is look up the company and see if they are still in business. If not or if they are hundreds of miles away from me, I just grind the name off the ring and paint the ring flat black. If they are a local company, I call them and ask if there is a reward for one of their tanks. Sometimes they will give you a refill of your other tank for free to get their tank back. Here in Tucson, leased tanks are a very rare thing. People just don’t go for it at all so it wasn’t successful. Other places it is the norm and about the only option. Found your channel by searching about welding. I am just starting out as a hobbyist for personal projects and as a positive distraction (therapy 🤣). When looking for tanks, do you ask for the last test/certification to assist in negotiation the price? I myself don't know what I am looking for. I am not looking to resale any tanks, I'm just looking for myself to get a couple. One for straight argon and the other for 75/25 argon. I too live in the Tucson area (born and raised). Wouldn't mind meeting up with you to chit chat about welding or other areas of interests. In the Tucson area, where do you like to shop for your welding supplies?
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mikell! I’m always amazed how many tucsonans have watched this video! Lately, if I find a tank for a reasonable price I just buy it regardless of the test date. The availability of tanks in Arizona and everywhere else has dried up for the suppliers. I sold a couple tanks last week and one of them was to a guy from Mesa who drove down to get it because there is nothing available in the phoenix valley. I called airgas the other day and they said they have 3400+ tanks on order and the wait time is over a year to get one now. So if you see a tank come up for sale, grab it. I’m not very active in the tank game anymore due to the amount of welding work I have right now, so I won’t be competing with you for the used tanks. Mathesons on Grant rd. Just west of Oracle rd. Is the best place to exchange your tanks when you find one. If it is out of test date they only charge $15 where as most of other shops are charging $50 or more. Let me know if you have any other questions and I’m always happy to help. 😁👍Don

@PranaTech

Hi Bernie! That’s a great deal on those 300cf tanks! Here where I live it’s about $58 to fill a 300cf tank. As for difficulty in selling the tanks, every area is different. The 300cf tanks only weigh 15 pounds more than the 250 so weight shouldn’t be a problem. The larger your metropolitan area is, the easier it is to sell them because the demand is higher for the tanks. Here in Tucson I could sell those tanks all the time for $350. Sometimes I have to wait a week but usually they sell in just a few days. I would call your local welding shops and see what they get for a tank and then undercut them by $100. This makes you some cash and gets the buyer a good deal and everyone wins. Hope this helps. 😊👍Don

Hi John, what I usually do is call airgas or the local guy I use and ask them before I purchase the tank.😁👍

I did have a couple that had names on them and one of the places here in Tucson wouldn’t take them. I finally found a shop that would swap them out but I almost got burned on that one.

Do the ship these gas on offer up? I would like to buy a small co2 bottle and a small argon bottle.
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nick, I guess that would depend on the seller since offer up is individuals selling. I know the tank needs to be empty to ship though. I find my best deals locally that way I don’t have to pay shipping. If you don’t mind paying for the shipping, Amazon has a few sellers that will ship new tanks to you. Hope this helps!👍😀

You can't use acetylene for anything else - that's why it's an odd shape . It has an absorbant in it, and a different valve.

Yes, acetylene is a low pressure tank with thin walls.👍

What about the silver and green med o2 tanks?
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 4 жыл бұрын
They are usually aluminum and don’t bring much profit so I usually stay away from them. The larger steel tanks are where the money is, but I have bought a couple full size aluminum Co2 tanks that I exchanged for steel welding tanks.😀👍

I live in Tucson. Just bought a full oxy acetylene setup from a lady who's dad died and got both tanks with hoses for 350. This video😂

Me either until I started looking at the used tanks. The only ones that I have seen this old are the ex-military ones. I think they must be of a much higher quality.👍

Have you ever bought one that was previously lost or stolen. What was the result? My dad bought two at a garage sale years ago. One was leased. The other stolen. Lost both tanks. Out $100 . That was like 2010 Just wondering if you had any tips. Like I have a oxy tank. With a white ring painted on the collar. That's an owned tank. Great content. Thanks

Ok, so I have been taken a couple times by the leased tank deal. I now call the welding supply company BEFORE I purchase and ask them if they will exchange the tank if it has “example” name on it. This way I never get stuck with a leased tank again. 😁👍

@@PranaTech have you ever seen one with a collar stamped with “United States Air Force”? Not sure if I should purchase it. Called gas companies in my area and they want me to bring it in to see if they can exchange it..

Hi Bernie! I’ve never had an Air Force tank but I have had quite a few US Army tanks. They are very high quality and most of the ones I’ve gotten were from the 1940’s and still going strong. I’ve never had a problem exchanging them at any shop. From what I understand the military sells them off after a certain number of years and then they go out to the public use. 😁👍

@@PranaTech do you think the same concept applies to this Air Force tank? And the tank is fair game and I can get it refilled?

Here in Tucson yes. where you are it will depend on the guys at each shop and their policy.

If tank is complete with valve, they are not all interchangeable; oxygen in particular.
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 4 жыл бұрын
Hi John, you are correct about there being different valves for the different types of gasses. But here in Arizona, they care most about the steel value of the tank and will exchange any tank for any other tank of the same size, regardless of gas content or valve. 😀👍

Can you do same and exchange other sizes (40,60,80 cubic feet) of gas cylinders for their equivalent size? Or is the exchanging, regardless of gas type, only for the big bottle (120)? Thanks
@PranaTech
@PranaTech 2 жыл бұрын
Here in Tucson, most of the shops will exchange any size for the equivalent size. Gas doesn’t matter here either. I can exchange any type of high pressure tank for any type of gas that I need. I have even traded multiple smaller tanks for the equivalent cubic foot larger tank. I would check with your local shops to verify this in your area though. 👍😊
