I love dark/light academia because it creates a sanctuary from the superficial, aesthetically void world around me. When I go to Europe, history and culture are everywhere. When I return to the States, it is so lacking that I'm depressed for months. When I enter my dark/light academia home, I get a sense of beauty and permanence that is so grounding.

I was creating a combination of dark and light academia in my home 30 years ago, of course, I didn't realise it at the time. It actually started at 14 years of age when my grandmother died. I was allowed to choose some items from her home. My relatives were dumbfounded at my choices. I still have those items and a lot more of this aesthetic in my home all of these years later. Excellent video. Thank you 🧡🤎💛🖤🩶

I love a style that celebrates being a nerd. "A look and subculture that romanticizes learning...and is related to finding beauty within the darkest places." Perfect definition! Details I love: the preppy clothing fabrics -- corduroy, tartan, velvet, tweed; chamber stick candleholders and aged wall sconces; Greek plinths (I have some) and antique clocks (wish I did); "The Portrait of Dorian Grey" and other great literature. Your style analyses are the BEST.

Brilliant, brilliant video you created for dark academia. It is much appreciated. I am a 52 year old, male, novice to this aesthetic. I am a life long "preppy" who has always had an appreciation for the greater parts of this sub-culture. I am glad I recently found this community of like-minded people. 👍

This is me and my style. I’m a 63 y/o with a lifelong pursuit of learning. Love being surrounded by books, classic furniture, antiques, paintings, hobbies, etc. I also love Edinburgh. The one thing I cannot do is dark walls in order to fend depression, but I subscribe to everything else.

I've been designing my dream home for over 30 years, and because I love the stories, and movies of he earls and lords traveling the world, exploring, discovering and learning about the different cultures, and anything academic, I have designed my son's room that way. So, four years ago when I was lucky enough syart designing my dream house, this was my chance. My builder and the rest of the crew thought I was "wrong" or "weird" to want what I wanted, because my house was lije no other they've ever built, or painted. Even people walk in my house, they LOVE it, and they say I captivated the essence if a very old European chateau or couny estate, that's been renovated throughout the centuries. I've been designing a combination of Light and Dark Academia for decades, and I didn't know what it was called until this morning. It truly is a stylish and gorgeous design, however one can't be afraid to be bold!!! Thank you for your videos!!! 👍👍

One of the best guides to dark academia I've seen. My grandfathers study was quintessessential dark academia, he was born in 1892. It was his way of life, dedicated to learning and a reflection of his many interests and travels. A gifted educator he was a fierce intellectual thinker. My own study has the same aesthetic and reflects my own interests, filled with books, my grandfather's large handcarved leather (desk) writing portfolio, my grandmother's champagne bucket from the 1890s, crystal barware, art and things I treasure, a great oriental rug and soon a purple velvet couch, possibly a celestial ceiling. I love the sumptious feel of velvet, the jewel tones, family portraits from 1897 and creating a unique room - no flocked wallpaper for me:). Lighting is key, a fancy mirror and unique wall candle sconces... I have no desire to design our entire house this way but I love a good study - library where fellow intellectuals can sip expensive alcohol and discuss the affairs of the world. Thank you for your inspiration and your book suggestions, much appreciated.

Great video.... one of the better one on KZbin! So I've been doing "Dark Academia" for decades and never knew it. LOL. A friend once described my home as the love child of a Ralph Lauren bedroom and a Oscar Wilde opium den.... which seemed about right at the time. A few recommendations to those who really want to make this work. 1) Don't get too kitschy with your collectibles. Instead, focus on things that represent who you are and what your do. ex: A HS science teacher might want to collect and display 19th and early 20th century lab equipment, antique microscopes, real skulls, and vintage botanical prints. A musician might want to hang old instruments in shadow boxes and collect books on classical composers. In other words... make it personal and DON'T copy what everyone else is doing. 2) Let it evolve gradually over time. It will seem a lot more authentic, and will eventually turn into a favorite hobby. 3) Don't spend a lot. Most of my things are inherited or picked up at thrift shops, tag sales, and antique malls. Also, avoid modern reproductions... antiques are cheaper and look better. 4) Avoid the Harry Potter trap. Instead, look to movies like Angels & Insects, Chariots of Fire, Maurice, and My Fair Lady. 5) Learn to dust and learn to love it. Collections need care and maintenance... so dusting is required. 6) I would also recommend acquiring a basic understanding of 19th century British history: the basics of empire, Darwin, the industrial revolution, travel and exploration, furniture styles and periods, and, of course, art and architecture. This will help you identify what your looking for and will increase the fun when explaining your collections to friends and guests. Cheers!

I've been decorating with hiking supplies, sailing memorabilia, and some flask for distilling. its quite an ensemble. Carrying a brown and orange and amber color rug, paired with some leather furniture, scattered with many green flowering plants. the flowers are all different colors, giving some more life to the rooms when the weather is warm. I like the industrial lamps with incandescent bulbs. They give subtle vibes of inventiveness. I work as a carpenter, so i keep some wooden knicknacks around and have some saws about. its quite cool to experiment and see what looks cluttered and whats welcoming to people.

Great ideas.Thank you. I have made the small library in my mobile home into a dark academia room. Fortunately, it has a fireplace. Did pretty much your suggestions. I have victorian style furniture in there including a desk with tons of cubbys, a chandelier and three glassed in antique cabinets. Everything either off Craigslist or given by a family member. I inherited a beautiful black clock with a cherub when my father died. He bought it in France. As I find new things, I throw them in the mix ( pipes and holder, old walking sticks and, of course old books).

When I was a kid I read I Spy A Spooky Night by Walter Wick, and from them on I wanted my home to look like a spooky old professor's home. I was already drawn to things like globes and sandtimers and old clocks, so this spoke to me right away. And I have always loved books and art and learning. As an adult I have been putting my room together for years, and I was sort of late to finding out there is a name for it now. I bought a lot of items at my neighborhood vintage store over the years (sadly now out of business) and a lot of my items have a story to them, so I'm pretty proud of my space. I try to collect art work that goes with the space but which also speaks to me. I'm a little bit more eclectic because I like to mix vintage from different eras. I like to have things that are personal and inspire me, so I have framed photos of women artists/writers/photographers whose work I love throughout the space, and a gallery wall with framed title pages of books I love, and things like that. My favorite things are my 1933 typewriter and the vintage replica of a victorian lady's desk which I write at every day. I appreciate that you mention in your guide to have things that are personal to one's interest; I think that makes it more of a space you can love.

My other half is actually an academic at Edinburgh University and mostly works at home in our late Victorian house. This obviously sets us up perfectly to have a Dark Academia study, especially as we already have mahogany old furniture including desk and desk chair. She wants to go full on with dark walls. I’m wondering about the lived experience of working all day in a dark academia room. Is she likely to feel sleepy when she’s meant to be working?!

MORE IDEAS: Love dark metal ceilings and wainscoting, vintage coat hooks in an old metal style, Persian rugs, lamps with dark shades (teal especially), rounded "coffee tables;" dark plaids, reds, and, and Nantucket blues; not keen on the chandeliers unless it's something unique, art deco, or even modernish;" throws, large pillows, lots of textures, laces panels behind heavy curtains (but not a lot of fancy Victorian-style curtains), decorative window shades, Victorian bedroom sets, antique file cabinets, statues such as Le Penseur (The Thinker) or Don Quixote, large scenic landscapes with dark frames (Hudson River School), HUGE heavy wooden desks, library tables, and high backed chairs. Of course, I love the old globes, old maps, and velvet sofas in burnt orange, dark sage greens, burgundies, golds, teal, and eggplant.

There has been shops selling dark academia styled stuff for years. Earth bond in key west for example was selling things in that style all the way back in 2019.

Also most of those movies are not in that style. Think the magicians, the librarians, lost girl, the covenant. Good will hunting is not Dark academia and Harry Potter is just generic fantasy. The definition of dark academia is revival of late 19th century and early 20th century American college aesthetics typically derived From Neo Gothic and Greco Roman revival architecture and design.

Of course, you have to add some books by Nietzsche like genealogy of morals and twilight of the idols at the very least but of course, Zarathustra is the real classic.

I've sort of got this vibe started in my home without even noting it as a distinct style. Although it isn't really all that dark because of the many windows. I left off window hangings because of the ornate window trims. . . why spend all that money to trim out windows just to spend more money to cover them up with window hangings. But the dark furniture, books galore, dark walls etc. are all there.

Thank you so much for this! Very informative. My dilemma is that I love this style and want to use it in my home office and reading den (two distinct spaces in my home) but don't want to use it in the rest of the house which I am keeping light and airy. Do you have suggestions for not combining per se but instead transitioning from this aesthetic in one room to something more eclectic/global/boho/airy in another room?

Dark academia in the den & office and light academia in the rest of the house. Even romantic academia 🤗 I have a video on that style if you haven't already seen it🤗 That way the style is the same but colour palettes create distinction 🤗

I have a question, I am thinking of painting the wall around the fireplace in a subdued red. But... painting the built-in book shelves and the walls between the shelves in a rich wood brown. The rest of the library I am thinking, a Benjamin Moore paint color Orleans Violet. It goes well with dark furnitre. What do you think about the subdued red, and Orleans Violet as a color combo ? I know the rich wood brown would be great, since this is about Dark Academia.

You must own a few cats. It needs to look like a witch home. Herb garden and choose decor colors depending on which HP house you are in. Books: Wuthering Heights, Bronte books, Dickens books, Sherlock Holmes, Fung shuei, Dianne Wynne Jones, Thesaurus, Ancient language books, Gnomes book. 😆

I didn't even know that my inspired love for the entirety of this termed way of being, was even a thing... for the past few years I feel like those things that Ive been drawn to were epitomizing all that ia encapsulated in this whole aesthetic. I was drawn to TV shows like Felicity, Gilmore Girls, Lucifer, movies like: This Beautiful Fantastic, Jane Eyre, the After series, Notting Hill Books on classic literature history philosophy even some old sciences. My journal takes on a vintage aesthetic and my taste leans towards antique vintage oldschool motifs. I do like the idea of herbaculture horticulture the clean less modern way of living. I want nature and natural. Less reliance on technology or maybe just a balanced approach to the utilization of technology? I love the old way. Anyway not even sure why I posted this 😂.

@@dantierandbalogh I suppose I should have added Im a creative so painting and art and history of art sewing and all thingd crafty has also become a loved intetest... but Ive always been this way so thats natural. Maybe the creativity of this aesthetic is what draws me to it to it to begin with? Interesting tho. Even switched at birth tv series... the artistic aspect within that show is mainly what kept me intetesting alongside the school and learning of sign language. Its amazing to me 😂😂😂❤ thanks for the response.
