First video where you surprised me with a faux pas... the light switch should have been moved. No so difficult for me, as an electrical contractor, but you likely have picked up some of those tricks since you made this early career video Richard. Kudos for all the great work you do!

Nice work! Glad I've found your videos. Really enjoying them. We had this effect done in our kitchen, fireplace mantle and surround, and some built-in bookcases. We have a slightly heavier effect with the faint "smearing" to approximate grain lines. It's a neat look and as you say, it makes the detail pop, particularly for 3-piece molding. When I first saw the effect I didn't really like it, but we found an example in a home while planning our new home we built. It looks really good, but you have to take the other elements into consideration such as things like choice of back splashes (or what's already there), counter tops, etc. I have a hobby wood shop and I tried this on some small experimental pieces, just to try it myself. You certainly have to get the "touch" right. The key to this style is, to me, keep it subtle. It'll still highlight the details, but can get too much very easily. The gleaming while of non-glazed trim was a little too white. Besides, we have kids and this technique sort-of hides the little marks and blemishes that you get... Another detail I had done was faux panels (matching the cabinet doors) on the large pieces on the end of the fridge "box" and outside ends of the cabinets. It makes a nice finished appearance vs. a plane panel. Again, nice work. looking forward to the next vid.

Yeh. That was my thought. I appreciate that some people may like this look, but it is definitely not for me. I totally understand Richards comment about doing all that paintwork to make it look nice and then spoiling that and doing more work just to make it look dirty.

Good video. Another thing to add is make sure you're constantly repositioning the clean rag over your finger so you don't reuse a dirty spot. I saw you doing it but for a noob such as myself I think it's important to mention.

I work in a kitchen cabinet shop as the head finisher and we/I do maybe a dozen glazing jobs a year....having said that, they can be fun, but some profiles make it extremely annoying and time consuming. Especially if ur OCD like me lol, but that's the point of glazing (generally) is to look man made and not pin stripe robotic, although one can ask for that super neat drawn on look. More often than not, it is supposed to look perfectly imperfect or consistently inconsistent.

Lovely work. I have a question though; what paint sheen do you recommend on millwork that is going to be glazed like this? And in crown molding that has heavy detail, in your opinion, does it look better glazed or just painted white?
@FinishCarpentryTV8 жыл бұрын
+PepperPlum 21 Thanks. Satin all the way. I do not like gloss or semi-gloss for trim, but unfortunately that's what a lot of people are using these days. I think it looks better just painted white. The glaze is nice, but its not for everyone.
@pepperplum21668 жыл бұрын
+dfw crown Thanks for responding. Will the satin still show all the intricacies in the millwork? The person I spoke to at the paint store told me that since higher sheens show imperfections more, it would show detail better. I understand what she's saying but I'm concerned that too high a gloss will make the molding look like plastic.
@FinishCarpentryTV8 жыл бұрын
+PepperPlum 21 I agree with her 100%. Satin is not a high gloss finish. It is a very dull finish. Yes, satin will show all the detail. Satin would be your best choice. The high gloss and semi-gloss do make the mouldings look weak in my opinion.

Hi Richard! What ratio did you use when tenting your glaze?
@jakemaddox769 жыл бұрын
Sorry bud, last question (for now :-), when you are installing wainscott in a house that has the outside corners with a radius (I'm sure you see this in Texas all the time), do you cut a small piece with two 45 degree cuts, or do you just do a 90 degree corner and then fill in the gaps at the top with caulk and sand? I'm looking to do wainscott in my home and the baseboard has a small (maybe 1") piece at the corners, seems like ripping the long strips with the MDF for the corners with two 45 cuts would be a lot more work. Just curious how you do it. Thanks again.
@FinishCarpentryTV9 жыл бұрын
+Jacob Maddox Good question. Yes, we do rip down long strips to make the actual corner. Its actually pretty easy.

Now the Sherwin Williams has discontinued their 'faux impressions' line at their retail stores, what glaze do you now recommend? Thanks for the great videos!
@BrokenRRT7 жыл бұрын
Tom Holmes - Home Depot stocks the "BEHR PREMIUM PLUS WITH STYLE® Faux Glaze". My local Sherwin Williams stopped carrying glaze long ago so we used the Martha Stewart faux glaze sold in quarts. I tinted it myself but they did tint it to a point. Then they stopped selling that line of her label and changed to selling pre tinted mostly in metallics of her label in hobby size 10oz containers. It's a shame because her quart clear glaze was a great product and actually cheaper than the Behr. I was forced to to try the Behr brand glaze sold in quarts and very happy with it. They will also tint it.

@mabird68528 жыл бұрын
...but what if you want to paint the upper wall a different color than the wainscoting, like green (which I think is a much nicer look, two different colors of paint instead of all white)? The trim doesn't reach the edge of the wall in left corner of this picture, the section behind the 3 chairs. Can you run the trim to the edge of the doorway and blunt cut it? It looks like you did that on the right side of the doorway--why not on the left, too, so you can paint the upper wall a darker color?

it does make the panels look more defined, but they also look dirty tbh. think it would look better painted a darker color that would naturally bring out the highlights, or painted different colors, although this would be more work

+shonuffisthemaster You're exactly right. This look will always be controversial because it is an issue of ones personal taste. Painting some trim a different color would definitely be cool, but yes a lot of work. Thanks for the comment!
