Wow amazing work mate. You install the exact same way as i do except for the broom stick which is a nice touch. Been doing installing tubulars for 37years now for hundreds of customers. Well done mate. Good to see someone else has a passion for their work like i do.

Have been riding and mounting tubulars for 37 yrs. and that is all I ride! I really enjoyed your presentation you are spot on! I have friends that are definitely intimated by the gluing process! My training tubs I leave a 1" spot without glue in case of a flat for pulling off fortunately that rarely happens (knock on wood)! Sure is nice having the wider rims these days compared to the rims of the early 80's! Thanks again!

Hi Rob, thank you for this video. This winter I did my very first glue/mount and now riding tubs for the first time. I referenced a dozen different videos on setting up tubulars, and yours is THE most thorough and straight forward. Solid methods and practices that gave me the confidence to do the job. Appreciate you and your talents!

Hey, Thanks so much for this video. THE most comprehensive and informative I could find anywhere. I've just glued my first set after watching. And I have been cycling for 35 years. Some cure time now then I'm rolling. I really appreciate you sharing your expertise and experience, Thanks again from the west of Ireland.

Thank you so much for the video. I am new to tubulars and have watched countless videos with many different styles. Your video instills a confidence in me that I wont end up on the Tarmac due to my install. I am using your method exactly and after mounting my tires today(finally) I will let cure overnight and ride them tomorrow. I especially love the "tubular tire installation device" I have one of those and will use it when doing the final glue. Your sttention to detail is appreciated.

hi! great video! ive been using tubs since 2012, no problem, mostly conti sprinters. then around 2018, the thread around the valve started to unravel , the tore swells, gives a bumpy ride for a few minutes to one hour before the air leaks out. boought a new sprinter, same thing happened. the next 5 sprinters had the same problems. tried to repair, resew or in three cases, i sewed the tire around the valve area for reinforcement. worked for a while and they relapsed. went back to clinchers, and after a while, bought a pair of vittoria corsas. the pair worked for two years although i used it only for "special occasions". then it happened to the old vittorias. since the last problem occured on a ride, i replaced it with a new, unmounted vittoria. the same thing happened. ii am 200lb, used an unbranded carbon 50mm for 6 years didnt have problems with it till the last year) and i got me a campy bora in 2018. i use an elastic glue for adhesions since 2012. i place a generous amount around the valve but i place the in 5in alternate: glue-no glue.glue. it worked at the start until 2018. all of the failures occur exclusively on the rear tire, never on the front. i emailed conti, no reply since last month. i emailed vittoria and they referred me to the local dealer (which there is none in my place). thanks!

BTW, i didnt glue it like you did. I mount the tire, put some air and peel off 5in of tire and insert the glue. it may look foolish now but it worked for 5 years.

Recommended inspection and treatment for the new owner a used set of wheels with a set of tires already glued on? Or for subsequent tire changes years after the original glue up? Is it necessary to remove old glue?

Using your video, I glued my first set of tires. Thanks! With Conti cement and a couple days curing after mounting, the cement still feels tacky if I press my finger into where the tire meets the edge of the rim. Is that normal? Does cured cement retain some tackiness for a long time? I used two coats with a day between each coat plus a mounting coat on the rim, just as you described, and needed just a smidge less than two tubes of glue for two Conti Sprint Gatorskin tires. If it matters, these are old aluminum rims from the 70's, stripped bare (solvent and abrasive).

Thanks for the most comprehensive gule video there is! do you use the naptha on the side wall of the tubular as well as the rim? How you you prep the base tape again? emory cloth just like the rim?
@PSIMET3 жыл бұрын
I prep the base tape by lightly buffing it with a Scotchbrite wheel on my drill press. You could easily do it with Emory. Just looing to scrape the top layer to remove any oil or dirt from storage and transport and raise a couple of the fibers in the base tape to help it accept glue.

question for you . I watched the Lotto team video on gluing tires and they put the glue on the rim but not on the tire itself. no curing no second coat. They have better glue?
@akindo92234 жыл бұрын
This one? kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHbJfpKviN9-ha8 Tyres could've been pre-glued, right? Either way, they're using Mastik Pro, and the instructions for that say to pre-glue tyre, so I'm planning to follow those instructions.

Can you leave glue on rims & tyres longer than 24hrs prior to final coat mounting ?

Excellent video but one question, after I mount it and set it to 25psi for the final cure process, should I wait 24 hours before pumping up the tires to max psi?
@PSIMET3 жыл бұрын
Yes. By rolling it you’ve pushed it into the valley of the rim. Then by putting low pressure in it you’re keeping pressure on the glue but not pulling it out of the valley of the rim of the rim and tire don’t have perfectly matching geometry. After the glue cures then pump it up to whatever you want.

How du you get the baste tape latex layer off of Vittoria tubulars? Tried a file, sand paper, sponge, acetone, steel wool, but the progress is so slow.

Thanks for the excellent video. In another video, you show how to tell if a glue job is bad by looking for gaps and so forth. After you've glued up a tire and let it cure (overnight?) do you do some sort of inspection? Is it the same as you showed for the bad glue joint? Do you push on your day old glue job as hard as you showed in the failed / bad glue job video as a test? Anyway, the question is: What final inspection do you do, if any, before letting the wheel go out the door?
@PSIMET5 жыл бұрын
ef2b I usually never check them if I’ve followed all the steps. But checking them the same way after they have cured is perfectly fine.

good video, you don't use belgian tape? Is this because your tubular rim bed is wide and shaped specifically for CX tubulars? What about for narrower rim profiles?
@PSIMET5 жыл бұрын
I have used "Belgian Tape" only a handful of times. If you glue with enough cure time between coats you shouldn't need it. Only time I use it is if the rider is on old school rims (19-20mm wide) and weighs a lot and if the tire is used and being re-glued, etc.

Great informative video and I’ve just followed this process to fit some tubs to my track wheels. Back in the early 80’s when I raced and trained on tubs I never took so much care. I just use to glue the rim and put the tub straight on. I rode road, track and crits and never had one come off. I have a track wheel set in which I stuck the tubs on in 1983 with Clement Red and they are so solid and I can’t get them off the rim. Is the process much more thorough now because of carbon rims and heat dissipation and there being more of a risk of glue melting? Do you really need so many coats on aluminium?

Built up a an araya wheelset with araya rc 540 rims, DT swiss 2.0 1.8 2.0 Double butted, laced to Ultegra 6500 hubs 14 gauge spoke nipples. Big problem, the rim has lateral distortion to the side of each of the eyelets - the distortion isn't at the eyelets it's at the braking surface as if it is jittery when braking - I have close to perfect equal tension throughout. Rebuilt it again with using oil on threads and eyelet holes still same result. Gotta be over tensioned spokes causing the distortion right? I've got an average of 160 Kilograms of force on the spokes, should I reduce the tension to 117 kgf? There is no cracking of the rim, and when I de-laced it the destortion went away but when I retensioned it again it got distorted again. Could I have permanently distorted the rim? Can you give advice on this?

@PSIMET11 ай бұрын
Don’t remember what I did in that video but normally if I’m buffing tape I’m using a scotchbrite pad. Mainly because that was always chucked up because I used to also use them to strip old glue. You can use anything mildly abrasive. Just be careful.
