This are the steps I took on my 1995 GMC Sierra whose base idle was consistently running 1200+ rpm (too high). 1) warm to operating temp; 2) engine off, jump A-B; 3) key on, engine off; 4) 30 secs for IAC to close; 5) unplug IAC; 6) remove jumper; 7) engine on with idle racing about 1800 rpm; 8) adjust idle screw with 20 torx--counterclockwise one half turn--note: engine does not respond at this step; 9) engine off, plug in IAC; 10) test engine on: idle=750-800; 11) engine off and unplug battery 30+ secs to reset any codes. On restart, engine maintained 800ish rpm at idle warm. Note that my setup includes a rebuilt TBI by SPR Performance with double bushings at the throttle butterfly valve to prevent fuel seepage caused by pressure from the ATI Procharger. I hope these notes answer the question as to how much of a twist of the adjustment screw is needed and what to expect when turning it.

I finally figured out that the plug for the TPS was bad, cut it back a few inches & wa-la! Idles at 600 now & runs perfect..only took me 7 years to figure that out, if all the contacts are good the plug itself don't necessarily have to be good automatically. DOH! 😂

Finally I learned something about the TBI that I didn't have to second guess whatever issue I was having at the time! I've had a 1994 GMC Sonoma for going on 8 years now, I love the truck, rwd, 4.3, automatic, ex cab, that was crashed a little bit so I put a frame horn on & went from there. I drive a little aggressive but in Reno if you don't, you'll get sucked right in to the non stop circus of the lamest people trying to drive without a clue what they're doing! Traffic tripled here in a less than two years, being a local, I know every back alley & side street there is so I mash the pedal & jam! I'm a former m/ racer so it's not like I'm just going fast like the rest of em', I pay attention to my every move in advance & don't look at my phone ever! But it's been a lot harder to do when I find that I can't rely on a strong little v6 to get with the program when a car is heading my way & I can't afford a stall or sputer that I have to feather the throttle with in order to not slammed. I've got an older 4.3 not a vortex anymore, but this is a strong engine, I also freshened it up with crane roller rockers, new push rods, oil pump, timing set up, all new sensors, which ain't much for a 94 on the cusp of KISS to more complicated than it's worth with all of the OBD 2 garbage, my buddy completely rebuilt my transmission with Corvette servos, after going thru transmission blues between getting ripped off for one tranny, a piss poor mechanic who supposedly knew tranny's, bla, bla, & four transmissions later, I have a Vette trans or a Camaro one, both the same, but built right with not a leak anyplace. He helped me install the new old 4.3 & it's truly a great truck with plenty of power when I want it, all of this was done and it was a happy place..until the very first cold night every year, then it would start tripping out & revving like the throttle was stuck, about 2500 for a few minutes then slowly start to drop off & then it'd go down to about 1200 for a minute or so, then it'd drop to 800 after the whole thing played out over a ten minute time span that seemed like 30 minutes half the time, not to mention fuel at 4.00+ for ever, or until it scrapes the paint off of a 5 dollar bill every few months. But then it would run great, no problem all day until the next morning, then the same shit all over again until spring came along, then it'd light right up, no high idle, no waiting to leave, ran perfect, until winter again, wash, rinse, repeat, every year with not one person on being able to tell me something I had not already tried to no avail. I had new TPS, new IAC, new temp sensors, new MAP sensor, new Mass air flow, new vacuum lines, all of the wiring is on the firewall, like an old school ride, not being bbq' on top of the engine like factory, I did that right away, but with literally every sensor new at the exact same time when I put the other engine in, it started doing all of the high revving stuff again, it made no sense to anyone, yes, I even put a new computer in & it was a BDYT exactly as the one it had new, I now have a complete set i can change out in a few minutes whenever I thought maybe its something else? I just went thru this two weeks ago, & rather than buy a brand new IAC, I opted for just a new TPS because it was on warranty so maybe it was bad now, it's been three years almost since the new engine, tranny so what the heck, I've asked more people than you could round up for free green beer on St. Patrick's Day & still no logical answers & figured it was just what it's gonna be. The fuel injectors were going me some problems and out of the blue, the idle started acting up but different than the other ones, then it died completely, between scrounging up a set of injectors that would do until I had money, I thought that maybe the TPS again, I didn't know, but this time, all of the sudden, it idled right down, right away and it was freezing outside! So now it ain't screaming bloody murder every morning, but all of the sudden, it was idling a bit too low, & dying on me over the past few days, I tried timing adjustment, nothing would bring it up just a few hundred rpm & I've been raçking my brain trying to to figure out what to do next. I needed to replace the cruise control cable for a long time now & just hadn't gotten around to it until now, that's when I needed to figure how to move the little clip thingy without breaking it, that is what brought me to your video, & you having the answer I probably needed when it was idling high, most likely not, but the point is now it doesn't idle high for whatever it was that I replaced this time that didn't work when I replaced it the previous times, but the high idle is gone, the low idle problem is over now, thanks only to you, because up until this point I was flipping out over finding out my motorcycle insurance just leaped way up because of one speeding ticket I got in my truck last fall, and never had a violation period on my motorcycle in more than 36 years, but now my fucking insurance automatically raised it because maybe I'm gonna go wild in the streets like Marlon Brando because I got a ticket in my truck, but need two classes of license and never had a ticket on a hot rod motorcycle, so I'm automatically guilty when my truck & my bike don't have anything in common period, I guess if I step on a bug outside, and kill it, I'm going to start being a serial killer by next week! Fucking burocratic bullshit, I want to sue em' but I'm white,so that won't work, but you sir,made my fucking day & I thank you very much for the useful information that I needed today of all days, you rock! 🏁✌️

do you leave the jumper wire pluged in while adjusting it
@3rdGenC10s3 жыл бұрын
Yes
@jamesmumford7743 жыл бұрын
The purpose of the jumper is to force the IAC to close. After unplugging the IAC with the key on and engine not started, the jumper is no longer needed. You pull the jumper out, start the engine and set the base idle. On an automatic trans vehicle the base idle is supposed to be set at 550-600 RPM. After killing the engine, you reconnect the IAC. The IAC ( which is controlled by the computer) then regulates your idle speed. It should idle faster on cold starts. The IAC also adds air when you put it in gear or turn on the A/C to keep the idle speed up and prevent stalling.

Wasn't the idea of the factory plugged torx screw for it to "NEVER" be tampered with? That it is supposed to be exactly where it needs to be? And so with that being said, that the owner would fix issues that allowed the ECM to make its adjustments to get the idle where it needed to be!?!? ... But if you bought a vehicle with the plugged drilled out and "tampered with" , then I can see the need to get one of these so-called baseline adjustments. Could you please share with me where GM has published the procedure you demonstrate in the video? Thanks!
@@3rdGenC10s ok....well that wasn't GM published, it was for a motor home. But thanks! I have a '91 and when I got it back from transmission shop some years ago, they mentioned the idle amd took it upon themselves to break into that factory protected idle screw. And sooooooo,.I thought to check out this video as it is idling far to high still. I probably will check out doing what is mentioned here. However, I would think that GM would state something like.... , for your vehicle, the idle screw was set to a certain amount of turns blah, blah, blah and then " Sealed" to never be turned again. And therefore the idle screw wouldn't be turned dependant on how the engine was running, rather, the owner would know precisely how far that screw was turned in by the factory. Make sense?

Did you do an IAC reset when you reinstalled the TBI? Disconnect battery to clear codes, reconnect battery, jump A&B on ALDL connector, turn key on for 30 seconds or so, turn key off, remove jumper from ALDL connector. What happens when you do this is the IAC pintle will extend full-closed and stay there until you turn the key off. Got a question. Got a ‘94 gmc k1500 with 350 tbi. Did a tune up ( plugs, wires, ignition coil, module, cap and rotor) truck starts as idle ok till I put in gear for reverse or drive. Looses power and wants to die unless I keep giving it gas. Gonna replace the IAC. Anything I should look at?

John Denelsbeck is it throwing any codes?
@johndenelsbeck80754 жыл бұрын
3rd Gen C10’s no not getting any codes.

John Denelsbeck you might check for vacuum leaks.
@johndenelsbeck80754 жыл бұрын
3rd Gen C10’s done that. All hoses are connected and been cleaned.
@3rdGenC10s4 жыл бұрын
John Denelsbeck I’d replace the IAC and see if that fixes it if not I’d break out the carb cleaner and spray everything down like throttle body gasket and hoses just to double check vacuum leaks.

Hey man, I have an 89 c1500 pickup with the same exact issue, I want to try this but where exactly would I find my A & B connector? Would it be under the hood or under the dash? Or would this step even apply to my truck? Thank you!
@3rdGenC10s4 жыл бұрын
AllStormOutDoors the connector will be right under the dash on the drivers side. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJi7hIt5h96qaNk This video should explain how to put it in diagnostic mode. The steps should be the same for you’re model as well!

@@3rdGenC10s Thanks. I'd like to hear a summary. Like, " warm engine, shut off, X a+b terminals, key on for 30 seconds, (hear noise in air controller) key off..Disconnect air controller. (disconnect battery for 5 mins ??) restart engine, oh, I'm lost

You NEEDED to be CLEARER with your STEPS! Everybody doesn’t know what you know! So when “teaching” people on HOW to fix something? You MUST DUMB IT DOWN! Things like! When holding the video camera? Use your other hand and LITERALLY PUT YOUR FINGER ON THE PART YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT! It helps the beginner KNOW what you are talking about! (Like the Idle air control valve). Then… LIST YOUR STEPS “IN ORDER”
@3rdGenC10s3 жыл бұрын
Man it seems like you have it figured out. I think you should post a video the correct way.
