You have a gift for identifying in your processes the little tips and tricks that you've learned so that you can pass them on. It helps me to remember to be thinking "how would I teach this -- is there something to pass along here?" as I'm doing similar work. Thanks

A couple of kydex tips...1) do the edge finishing on the sheath opening prior to riveting. Makes it way easier to get in there. 2) use 1/4-20 bolts and nuts to hold both halves off sheath together as temporary rivets for shaping, polishing, etc.

Hi Jeremy. Just a quick tip. If you hollow out the Handle on a smaller contact wheel you will be a lot faster. Cheers from NZ

I like the sheeps foot pattern for the boat knife. Stainless would be good for a marine environment. I would suggest G-10 in bright red or Floro orange, maybe use teak if you want wood. So it's easy to see and grab. Good body for the knife should work for ropes and other heavy cutting. I think the tapered tang will feel really good in hand. Going to be a great knife pattern.

That was neat to see. Like the idea of using the stock to get your angle. I was trying to think how I would do it and hadn't thought of that yet. Thanks for sharing.

Hey Jeremy. Though I'm having a headache and a back pain I just have to see your daily videos. Just love 'em, and I hope one day to be as good a knifemaker as you. Have a great weekend. One more thing... If you need rain, you can have ours Here in Denmark we had one of et wettest summer and a temperture of no more than 25-26 degree centius. So I just say lucky you.

Looks nice and will lighten up that handle even more. Whenever I think of a nice boat wood, I think of teak. Might look really nice once it got some patina along with the brass pins

Grind a hollow channel down the center of the tang. This does helps in a few ways. First, it means you have much less material to removal on the platen, and it also means you have much less surface area to try and get perfectly flat. You really only about 1/8" of flat around the perimeter. The hollowed channel also gives much more surface area for the epoxy to fill in so you don't have to drill so many holes, and of course reduces the weight in and of itself even before without tapering. I do this on all of my full tang knives, with or without a tapered tang for the reasons above. I do use a smaller wheel, actually one of my 3" (or so) platen idlers to grind the hollow channel when I'm not tapering the tang so I don't accidentally grind out to the spine. When doing a tapered tang, it is also faster to actually grind the hollow off the end of the tang down to just a bit before you hit the scribed lines on the butt of the tang, then just remove the rest on the platen. Another method for tapering the tang is to grind the tangs taper up just passed the ricasso, then just blend in the "ridge" where the tapered section meets the flat area during hand sanding and it will be basically indiscernible when finished. This also means you don't have to fiddle about trying to get the taper to stop exactly at the point the scales begin. Hope these suggestions are somewhat useful. 🙂

hey Jeremy, once again sweet content. Now i was wondering on something totally different. Music, how is that on KZbin, where do you get your background music from and how is the licensing on that? I'm sure you can't just use everything you like. Would love to hear about that.
@cjpiper24207 жыл бұрын
Nice.... would like to have one made😜
@samrobins72317 жыл бұрын
Woohoo I get to add my 2 cents again, when I taper tangs I only mark the center on the very end of the tang leaving my two scribes the thickness I want the taper to end with, then I do a 2 inch fuller down the center of the tang as evenly as possible down to my scribe lines( doesn't need to be perfectly on center just an even depth.) up to just before where my scales end near the Ricasso. Then you just have the edges of the tang to contend with as you grind vertically on the platten just as you did plus the remaining hollow left just grabs epoxy. Hopefully that made sense. Scribing the entire spine is probably helpfully but not totally necessary as long as your On center on the end of the tang and the grinds terminate evenly near the ricasso. The point of the hollow is a visual indicator as to when you get to that center on the end of the spine as well as a way to have much less metal to move while flat on the platten. Hope this helps!!!! Keep it up Jeremy.

How do you put scales on a tapered tang? Won't the angle of the tang mess up the straight holes drilled on the scales? I'm sure there's a way, I'm just not seeing it right now. So if you could make a video when you're putting up scales on this one, it would be great. Also love your content and watching your vids! Cheers

You are correct, I have a vise that holds the knife parallel with the drill press, then clamp on the scales and drill. I may have a video of it, if not I could make one.

The only reason I haven't tried a tapered tang yet is because I haven't figured out how to attach the scales. I mean, how do you drill the holes through the scales and have everything line up?
@Lee_B_Futures7 жыл бұрын
I notice that most of your grinds are hollow grinds. Just curious, but do you find freehand flat grinds harder to pull off than hollows? I'm having the hardest time keeping my lines straight on my flat grinds. Not to say it's easy grinding hollows, but for me it's for sure been easier than a flat grind. I keep reading and hearing the opposite from folks though. Thanks.

Jeremy try getting a strait edge when you have parkinson's I have to pick. My days when I grind
@lsubslimed7 жыл бұрын
Sander van Dijk - Doing a simple chisel grind can be much easier than doing a standard "V" grind, as you don't have to match up the bevel with the other side. Just grind the bevel on only one side and instead of stopping the grind at the center of the edge, take it all the way to the opposite side. You want the bevel to be on the same side as you are 'handed' or the dominate side hand of whoever you are making the knife for... e.g. on the left side on the blade if you are left handed, and on the right side on the blade if you are right handed. Giving the blade a stress relieving cycle and straightening any warping prior to quenching can help avoid warping during the quench. Just heat the blade sub-critically (it's still magnetic at this temp) to about 1250 F (this looks like a very dull red color in complete darkness) and let it air cool. This will help remove any potential stresses caused by grinding, which can be more exaggerated with the asymmetry of a chisel ground blade, although it can also be helpful for any type of knife.

I am not sure I see the benefit to doing the tapered handle. You now have to reverse taper the scales. I'm thinking the time cost is not worth the couple grams of weight savings. The handle feels no different when completed. So unless it is part of a spine art design, I wouldn't pay anymore for a knife just because it was tapered. JMHO
