Hi! I've watched your show before, but this was the 1st time I've seen you work w/a puppy. I know it's the owner's job to get help him become accustomed to staying still for grooming, but have you ever given them treats for responding the way you wanted? I worked w/my dog, but I can't imagine what happened between him & the groomer, but when I got him back he was MAJOR stressed & the fur around his neck was indented as if she'd used his choke chain to make him behave while being blow-dry. She never talked to me & I never went back.

Dede, I did like the fact that you ignored this puppy’s whining and wiggling and let him figure out for himself that he was not being hurt. If you had “comforted” him by constantly stopping to pet him and telling him it was ok you’d have been rewarding his puppy pleas and he would only have learned to amp up the crying and wiggling to get his way. Better a firm yet gentle hand to teach a puppy to accept grooming.

Anna Harlow - Agreed! She’s going too fast with the clippers. Sometimes the blades are dull and will pull on the hair. It happens to me at the barbershop sometimes and it’s very painful. This poor guy is definitely in distress. I wouldn’t let her touch my pups.

I agree 100%. She is extremely good at grooming, just needing a bit more knowledge of the breed. I have a Havaneae, as sweet and funny they are, they are very easy to train because they are extremely intelligent. However, they all freak out with buzzers. I have to scissor when I groom mine. They respond well to positive tones.

Hi Did I. You do a wonderful job and are very considerate you not hurt the dogs. This is the first video where I've seen you being a little softer on talking to the pup? I know you must be strong to cope with a lot of the matted dirty uncared for animals. So why did this little Havanese get your attention? Baby talk etc. It was lovely to see you like this. Our Havanese will be coming home in 5 weeks. I love what I have read about this breed enough to put aside 30 min a day for grooming. I love my Havanese, she is 2 years old and just a great dog. She loves people, other dogs and cats she is a social bug because I started her very young. I had her housetrained in less than 3 weeks by crate training and waking up every few hours to take her outside to do her business. Only problem I have is at the dog park she doesn't pay attention to me at all unless I start walking towards the gate.

I have a Havanese myself, they are so weird and loving. We also have her hair/fur short cause they easily get knots and tangles. She still has longer hair on her head so she can have a cute little ponytail, braid or bun. They are supposed to have super long hair but it's mostly for shows and such, I don't really like when they have longer hair. You did an amazing job!

My Havanese is white, I dry him in front of a fan while combing him. He's a very good dog let's me comb him and groom him and gets a treat after. I like to keep him short also. Havanese have really soft hair so that's probably why she thought he'd been brushed. They don't shed...and are hypoallergenic dogs

I used to have a Lashapoo ...I kept his fur shorter....when I didn't....he got very fury and matted...I had to have my little boy put to sleep (cancer) took him this past March ...he was 13 1/2 yrs old...I really miss him......Im looking into see if I can get a Havenese

My Havanese is 16 and the squirmiest dog you’ve ever seen. Also very strong so it is difficult to hold her while trying to groom. The last time I had her groomed the groomer said it would be her last grooming because the groomer was afraid my dog was going to have seizures the way she acting and the groomer didn’t want that to happen under her watch. I have since been trying to groom er at home but I seem to be doing it in bits and pieces. Each day trying to cut a new area. What do you suggest I do to get her groomed? She also has that black matter in her eyes which is building up. I try to soften it with a wet cloth and then use a blunt scissor to cut it off. But that too is in bits and pieces. Please give me some advice.

I have havanese. It is investment to buy grooming table and a cheap clipper (no need to cut the hair) so the dog used to being up there and sound of the clipper. For me I like long hair dog to be full coat, otherwise adopt short hair dog. The groomer is doing a good job!

I think in this case where it's the puppy's first groom she was trying distraction as a technique first. Also, hard to hold the chin when you are trying to trim the chin hair. 😉 A wonderful poi t to bring up.

I have a 7 year old Havapoo. What a chore to groom, and he is also very anxious about his feet. He was a rescue, and I am VERY glad we got him out of the situation he was in. We have tried the local groomers, with 'chill pills' which I hated to use, but he still gnaws and how's at the groomer. Finally, we just cut his hair at home, because he grows it like a crop. also, I second that suggestion about the sanitary area. Ours got a hair stuck around his member, and needed meds to stave off any infection and a cone collar for a few weeks to stop him from hyper-grooming himself.

My havanese is turning 3 in September, she still HATES the blow dryer. Doesn’t care if I use scissors to cut eye boogers but that dryer, she’s a freak. My yellow Lab on the other hand, he will not leave the bathtub if I don’t have the dryer set up for him after towel drying. He’s such a goofball.

Hi Dede. I am thinking of starting to shave my dogs down for the summer. They won’t behave for a groomer but have no problem with me. I know cause I have used heavy duty people hair groomers, but it couldn’t handle the hair. Any suggestions on how to find low cost shaver? It’s a rottie and border collie mix.

Dede has some great high quality clippers in her online store that you can get used, reducing the cost. I would suggest this for you because then you are getting quality. Something you can use even after you don't have your current fur babies.

depends on how short... after I did the 7 blade, mom brings pet in 6-8 weeks later, on his 3rd groom already, they like it SHORT.

She always brushes it into the trash. She usually roughs in the cut pre bath, so the fur would not be clean.

If you want a short cut start with the back then don’t he belly so you can see stuff
