Hello Roger. Thankyou for all your advice and tips. Im new to gardening outside and I bought a Rhody from Lidl yesterday. We have a communal garden shared by 8 of us and I'm the only one well and interested enough to make it nice to sit in for us all. It is on an old bomb site and is very stoney with bricks and rubble. Most of the bricks and rubble has been removed and loads of top soil added. Will this be any good to plant the Rhody in? It seems to drain well and there is a fushia planted there that's been growing there very well for the last ten years and there was a climbing rose that grew lovely. Also does the ph need to be high or low on a meter reading. Please help. I love rhodedendrons but I actually got it muddled with hydrangea when I bought it. Always wanted hydrangeas.Thanks for your vids I'm going to watch some more now.xlol. Sarah. Devon.UK.

Hi Sarah - greetings to the fine folks of Devon! Community gardens are great, well done for investing your energy for the benefit of others. Rhodies to prefer a lower ph, and will enjoy a bit of shade if there is any shade available in your garden? Plant with ericaceous compost, and use some ericaceous feed in future years. The only other slight concern I might have about your soil is that they do not like to dry out, and soil on top of rubble can be quite free draining ... this can be overcome by - lots of compost mixed into the soil, - mulching with bark mulch every year to hold in moisture - water well in any dry / warm spells (including autumn to protect next year flower buds) Hope this helps?

Hi - thanks for your comment - it will depend on the climate where you live ... here is wales our summers are often quite wet, but during dry times yes I would water, and in the early autumn when the flower buds are formed ready for next year that is also when I water. Where are you living / what is the climate there like?

What is the iron make of fertiliser called please?

Hi - the brand in the video is one from Maxicrop - please bear in mind that maxicrop make several fertilizers, not all of them are iron / ericaceous fertilizers ... here in the UK if you ask at any good garden centre of nursery for an Ericaceous fertilizer and they will have a couple of optios which would usually have the special iron content ... does that help ? where are you living?

Why are my rhododendrons flowers turning brown on the ends
@rogthegardener1

Hi Linda, thanks for your question, when I have seen this on my ‘Rhodies’ it has either been because the flowers were ‘going over’ and / or because they were getting slightly scorched by the sun ... this scorching could be more likely if the flowers have water or frost on the petals and then catch some bright sunlight ... but the good news is that it is not normally a serious problem (whereas brown spots on the leaves can be more serious) - hope this helps?
